Artists for a Better Future The chimp was treated like an equal to people, the owner Sandra Herolds had lost her husband and only child, and treated him like a son. He bathed and slept with her, could open doors using keys, dress himself, water plants, feed hay to his owners' horses, eat at a table with the rest of the family, and drink wine from a stemmed glass; he was so fond of ice cream that he learned the schedules of passing ice cream trucks. He logged onto the computer to look at pictures, watched television using a remote control, and brushed his teeth using a Water Pik. He enjoyed watching baseball on television and had driven a car on several occasions. Before he was bought by the Herolds', the chimp had also appeared in several tv shows and commercials. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travis_(chimpanzee) So no, the chimp wasn't treated like a prisoner, he attacked that poor woman because he was a stupid ungrateful wild beast. His stupid owner should have adopted an orphan from a poor country, not wasted all that time and money on a wild beast.
Kristina S. If you actually read the page you linked you'd know the owner had given the chimpanzee Xanax the day of the attack which causes unprovoked aggression and hallucinations even. Prior to that he'd shown no signs of aggression. The chimpanzee should've never been treated like a human and should've been raised in a proper enclosure. They aren't stupid creatures who attack for no reason. This was all on the owner.
I can't imagine the sheer pain Charla felt in and after the grueling moment. The fact that she was concious while that Chimpanzee eradicated her hands and face is horrifying. Stay strong, Charla.
She has said she doesn't remember it, so that's nice. Even if she was in unimaginable pain at the moment, it's a kind thought she doesn't live with the memory.

True - but doesn't Charla's dramatic story put most people's little problems into stark perspective? No life is plain sailing, there are bumps in the road for everyone. How you handle those bumps is what counts, and marks out the truly great human beings like Charla. She deserves great respect for her positive spirit - regardless of how much practical support she gets, she has survived an ordeal that would emotionally destroy many people, and take away their will to live. From what her daughter and friends say, she has always had a big heart - after all she was almost killed because she rushed to the aid of a friend when they called her in a crisis. I think her generosity of spirit and positive attitude to life have a great deal to do with her survival against the odds. She's too busy thinking of other people and living her life, to get bogged down in self pity. We should recognise and acknowledge that, and learn from it.

Owning one for a pet is like playing Russian roulette
I dont say that animals are not dangerous, but that women gave that chimp Xanax and gave him wine.
you can say that about any wild animal.. the instincts are always there no matter the training. Even professional trainers that go decades with an animal that has behaved fine every day up to that one point where it didn't and killed them.
My parents worked at a facility in the 70s and 80s and used to go to work with them sometimes and never would have known how savage the can be. Some of them were circus animals and after 4 to 5 years old they can't be trusted. They learn to hate humans. Beautiful animals and must be respected or left alone in the wild.

The owner died in 2010, and she was best friends with Charla when the chimpanzee Travis attacked.

Venom Defenses a doctor, who prescribed it to a human, not a chimp.
Brenden Barnett even humans on Xanax do crazy things then they can’t remember what they did the day before I can’t imagine what it would do to a chimp it probably didn’t feel real

Before he was bought by the Herolds', the chimp had also appeared in several tv shows and commercials.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travis_(chimpanzee)
So no, the chimp wasn't treated like a prisoner, he attacked that poor woman because he was a stupid ungrateful wild beast.
This was all on the owner.
ikr, poor charla had to face it 😨
Ichigo Red the owners chimpanzee ripped her friends face off not the other way around but that's only because she drugged it too much to make it crazy
Well it ripped her friend apart soo...
I think during those kind of situations everyone goes into a shock kind of state where all the pain is gone during that moment.

Good point. Others may not be blessed with her support system or indominable spirit and optimism, which makes their "smaller" problems harder to bear.
You forget. This story is about Charla. Yes. Most have struggles in life, but it's about her struggles.
