Chimp Attack Survivor Charla Nash Opens Up About Face Transplant Setback | TODAY
Keeping exotic wild animals as pets should be illegal. This is a prime example why.
except ferrets and fennec foxes
alan30189 is that not illegal already? It's illegal in the Netherlands
Amber,
Some countries allow you to keep exotic animals. Many states here in the US allow it, unfortunately. Because of this, we now have a problem in the state of Florida, where Burmese pythons that were let loose, are reproducing and killing off a large percentage of native wildlife. Animals like raccoons are rare in some parts of Florida now. Some people have non-native venomous snake collections, some of which might be able to survive if they escaped. Your government in Netherlands is smarter than ours in this regard.
I visited the Netherlands once. Nice country.
Yes, pit bulls can be a very violent species and I would never own one. A lot has to do with how they are raised, however.
alan30189 Don't you mean a "primate example"
ok I'll leave now
I just realized how small my problems are.
Exactly.
Exactly💯

Am never complaining again.
Me too
this is a FEROCIOUSLY better interview than the oprah one. oprah was so invasive and tried prying things out of her that she already stated she didn’t like talking abt. this interviewer treated her like a real person besides just the attack. it was very respectful.
I can't stand oprah
Yes! I love how it was more like old friends coming together again and not like an interview. She showed who charla is as a person and not who she is because of this attack. I love how she told us things about her life like on the daily and just really captured her resilience and strength to overcome an attack like that
Oprah has always been like that, sadly.
Oprah is very selfishly nasty!
I noticed that too. That’s Oprah’s interviewing style. She really is awful to her guests.
This woman reminds me of my mom.
She had a terrible accident where her legs were basically destroyed.
Doctors even considered removing her legs. But no. God put the right ortho surgeon and he made her legs like new. Its been 6 years since its happened and now she drives, runs, walks, and is a normal mom again. She is the strongest woman I've had in my life.
I’m so happy she’s okay!
God put the right ortho surgeon. *Goosebumps*. You are right.
i hope shes alright.
Gloria a Deus 🙏
The surgeon did it, give him credit he's not just a tool
This is why people shouldn't have wild/exotic animals for pets..
Please people keep away from wild animals. It doesn't matter if your boss own it. Save your face first
And this my friends is why you own cats.
Things aren't that simple in life. If you grow a child and because of various reasons they become a murderer does that mean that growing children is never worth the risks?
Tia Mandla Cats can be violent too
aletxia galvan a cat has never deliberately killed or mutilated a human though
This is why wild animals belong in the wild...praying for her..
Kin Shela YES! Is not the chimps fault, is that friend of hers fault, wild animals belong in the wild
The colorful side of life FACTS. This sounds dumb but i feel bad for the chimp, it probably got killed after this but it could’ve had a nice life in the wild if her friend didn’t have it as a pet. but i obviously feel terrible for the woman.
@@steph8159 He was shot by a cop that was at the scene when the attack took place.
NO not all wild animals belong in the wild and thank god here (great Britain) we dont have the ridiculous laws you have in the states ive owned many many exotic pets in my short lifetime and still have the 5 meerkats and 2 marmosets its all down to the individual circumstances but having a blanket view like yours is disgusting!!!!!!!!!!
@@danielwhittaker695 seems like your an idiot...a meerkat is not an adult gorilla...and yes wild animals belong in the wild..we should just give up on idiots like you....or well you could be a substitute for pet to these wild animals....Oh and P.S. I'm not american...I'm African and even we do not live with wild animals....It's called respecting every other species and letting them be in their natural environment which is probably the best home for them.
“Do you think you will?” “I will.” I cried, my God this woman is brilliant.
This interview had me in tears too. She is such an amazing woman❤
The doctors and surgeons involved in this transplant need to be highly saluted and regarded as the best of the best.. She was literally marred beyond human recognition and now thanks to these heroes she looks human again!!
People need to know that wild animals are NOT cuddly. They have wild natural instincts.
Alien Heston he just needed some cuddles
Yeah. Tigers, lions, chimpanzees, zebras, giraffes, crocodiles, etc, should NOT be kept as a pet, unless you are a professional that’s fostering an animal that cannot go back into the wild on its own.
The only wild animals that should be kept as pets are fish and some rodents in my opinion
BUT making sure that they can't do real damage to you or anyone is the first thing you should think about when owning any animal, domesticated or not
@@Solidsteakx True, but it was the owner who invited her over because the chimp locked the door and was behaving funny...
It was also due to the owner over feeding her chimp as well...which diets do effect behavior even in humans.
Look up human tarzan, and how he treats his lions, tigers, chimps etc...
@@coffeebean7512 Nar man, my pet giraffe is very friendly. If he steps out of line I just give him a little hit on the head and he's then all goo again.
The employer who owned the chimp should be paying for anything she wants
The owner died in 2010, and she was best friends with Charla when the chimpanzee Travis attacked.
It wasn’t her fault. The chimp flipped out. My cat flipped out on me once, scratched and bit my arm up but he doesn’t weigh 200 pounds.
It was her best friend who owned the chimp and it just went crazy
@@jblack5323 how was it not her fault? She had prior incidents with the chimp, which caused the state to ban owning one, that size, but she got to keep hers. The chimp was on the lose and the owner called her friend to help wrangle the chimp in. It wasn't her responsibility to help. People should not own wild animals.
Omegachu Female not true. He was under drugs during the attack.
Honestly she has come so far. This woman is a champion and deserves some kind of medal for bravery and strength. She’s a prime example of the amazing things people can get through.

She doesn’t need to. She has a face transplant now. They did an incredible job
Oprah's interview with this fabulous woman was disrespectful and exploitative in the extreme. She treated Charla like a circus freak. But this interview was the polar opposite - the easy rapport between interviewer and subject was lovely to see.
Charla is a human being who survived an horrific ordeal that changed her forever. But it didn't change her loving heart. She deserves the greatest respect. People set far too much store by shallow appearance. Beauty is only skin deep, real beauty, the kind Charla has, comes from something invisible to the eye - the soul.
She's very brave that chimpanzee destroyed her face they shot dead the chimp but she survived with flying colours why did the chimpanzee flip out attack her was it jealous because she bought a Teddy bear with her they have had the chimpanzee for years on the gate it says do not enter private property she was on her own and that's when it happened because she was on her own with Travis he attacked her and he was eating her face.
@@stevenbarnes8422 Chimps are not pets they are wild animals and should be respected as such. Travis' owner was drugging him, to keep him under control. The story is a tragedy for him too - he was stabbed by his owner to get him off poor Charla, until he crawled away covered in bloody, fatal wounds and was eventually shot by law enforcement.
I hope this horrific story helps bring about the end of the barbaric pet trade. Baby chimps (as Travis once was), see their mothers murdered in front of them, then are stolen from the wild and sold as pets. They have suffered terrible psychological trauma from losing their mother like that, it's beyond cruel.
Chimps are cute and cuddly until they hit puberty at around age 7, when they become as strong as several men and prone to aggression. They can also live to be 60, so they inevitably become a problem if living in a human home and treated like a human, as Travis was.
@@glamdolly30 Oprah just treated Charla the way she treated the poor chimp.
Considering how bad her face looked, the doctors did an absolutely amazing job. Is there a reason why she didn't get the mechanical/robotic hands? (not sure the actual term for them)
they did!
She’s looking good! They literally reconstructed a entire face! That’s a incredible transformation. The fact that modern surgery can turn a crater into a functioning mouth is absolutely astounding

Chimps are like little incredible hulks with human mentalities, they murder each other in the wild over jealousy 💀
Owning one for a pet is like playing Russian roulette
I dont say that animals are not dangerous, but that women gave that chimp Xanax and gave him wine.
you can say that about any wild animal.. the instincts are always there no matter the training. Even professional trainers that go decades with an animal that has behaved fine every day up to that one point where it didn't and killed them.
My parents worked at a facility in the 70s and 80s and used to go to work with them sometimes and never would have known how savage the can be. Some of them were circus animals and after 4 to 5 years old they can't be trusted. They learn to hate humans. Beautiful animals and must be respected or left alone in the wild.
guitarman0365 you can say that about any animal, even humans.
Well... the Incredible Hulk was inspired by great apes so... 💪🏻 ur not wrong.
Pain is relative, guys. Just because she suffered and survived doesn't mean that what you're going through isn't hard.
Good point. Everybody walks in his or her own pair of shoes. But this story makes me humble and I wish I had her courage and detemination.

We play the cards we are dealt. Most of the time, people can get through just about anything life throws at them. With or without the help of others.

Venom Defenses a doctor, who prescribed it to a human, not a chimp.
Brenden Barnett even humans on Xanax do crazy things then they can’t remember what they did the day before I can’t imagine what it would do to a chimp it probably didn’t feel real
It shouldve been the owner who got attacked, not her friend.
Sum Gassy short term memory loss comes from combining alcohol and Xanax
What an amazing woman. She has been through trials that we cannot even imagine and yet she is still determined to live her life and not let the tragedy she experienced define her.
She seems so sweet. I'm so glad that she's making wonderful progress. She's got a strong spirit!
I just hate how she has to suffer over her friend buying a dangerous animal. It isn't right and it enrages me that any person would even consider buying something that dangerous and exposing it to other people
Artists for a Better Future The chimp was treated like an equal to people, the owner Sandra Herolds had lost her husband and only child, and treated him like a son. He bathed and slept with her, could open doors using keys, dress himself, water plants, feed hay to his owners' horses, eat at a table with the rest of the family, and drink wine from a stemmed glass; he was so fond of ice cream that he learned the schedules of passing ice cream trucks. He logged onto the computer to look at pictures, watched television using a remote control, and brushed his teeth using a Water Pik. He enjoyed watching baseball on television and had driven a car on several occasions.
Before he was bought by the Herolds', the chimp had also appeared in several tv shows and commercials.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travis_(chimpanzee)
So no, the chimp wasn't treated like a prisoner, he attacked that poor woman because he was a stupid ungrateful wild beast. His stupid owner should have adopted an orphan from a poor country, not wasted all that time and money on a wild beast.
Kristina S. If you actually read the page you linked you'd know the owner had given the chimpanzee Xanax the day of the attack which causes unprovoked aggression and hallucinations even. Prior to that he'd shown no signs of aggression. The chimpanzee should've never been treated like a human and should've been raised in a proper enclosure. They aren't stupid creatures who attack for no reason. This was all on the owner.

Me too but go read that one comment this one guy made "Can you image horse goes crazy and eats her legs ?", you'll start cry laughing
She's so strong. Proud of her. This is why we should keep wild animals in the wild.
The strength this lady embodies is overwhelming fierce
I was literally sitting and hving a pity party and this came in my recommendations. We take life for granted and complain about little things. Everybody’s pain is valid and everyone is allowed to be sad but watching these stories gives you a perspective and a reason to be grateful.
It really does
So true and well said..
@CHRISTINE162004 🤗
So true
You said it best.
I'll never look at chimpanzees the same way. You hear how strong they are but this puts it in perspective at just how strong they are.
Chimpanzees aren't particularly dangerous to humans. Attacks on humans are rare. We don't need to fear them. They are beautiful animals. It's just important to remember that they are WILD and aren't meant to be pets.
Sequoiah Dreams Its not negative, its a objective view. they are wild animals and yes, they are amazing and beautiful , but that does not mean that people can have these animals like pets
I didn’t know how strong they were until i read this story. Apparently the owner stabbed the chimp multiple times trying to protect her friend that didn’t do much
The chimp never hurt anyone for over 10 years. Then the first time they gave it xanax it became violent, xanax efforts chimps differently then humans. It's there fault it happened
They have always been that way. Its in their nature. I have always heard that chimpanzeez are dangurous because they are. They arent cute they are wild
The smallest problems in our live sometimes just trivial after seeing this incredible life-story. And, this is definitely a real strength.
Im so happy her face is doing well.
I’m literally crying. she’s so so strong i wish her a happy healthy life
❤️
Sorry I think she dies 2010
@@heyguysitsshea oh sorry I got mixed up oops. I thought it was probably a reipload or something idk
You have amazing strength you survived your attack .You didn't give up after everything you went through. Lady you are an amazing women. You taught alot of people a lesson in life. God has an incredible plan for you. May God be with you every where you go.
I'm NEVER going to go near a chimpanzee ever again like that's crazy
Yes she has tremendous strength and courage. Truly an inspiration!!
@@roseazor1067 :) yep
@JoJo Cat :0
So you were planning going next to one before?
@@SL-pg4dh yep.
Wow. She is so inspiring. Her whole attitude and how she has faced this. 🥺🥺
What a beautiful strong woman!
And let’s remember WILD ANIMALS ARE NOT PETS
Companies like Google and Apple should make a fully controled house by Voice command for her, it's an act of kindness and a very practical way to show their future technologies.
brilliant idea 💡!
Oh wow that would be so amazing if only.
That's a great idea, but not just for her. There are millions of people around the world who struggle with many similar things. They should do it for everybody.
Andy Latino then google and apple would go bankrupt and be obsolete
I think he meant they would charge the people
I feel horrible that something so sudden happened to such a humble women. Lost her face, vision, and hands, yet she still doesn't let that get into the way if her life! It must be so tough but I send a prayer that she will continue to prosper😘 and grow.
Hanna Mercedes woman*. women is plural.
Hanna Mercedes
Don't feel bad at all.
Not to play down how amazing her recovery has been, and what a great attitude and outlook she has now...but she's assuredly more humble NOW post-attack than she was before. I keep reading, "Shame it happened to such a wonderful lady", but she was definitely nothing like this before the attack. She's grown into this humble person due to the incident. Not saying she was a bad person before, mind you.
ms . butterfly lady, why though? It wasn't even this lady in the video who got the chimpanzee, it was her friend/neighbor. And the friend only got Travis (the chimpanzee) as a coping mechanism after her husband and son both died, leaving her with no family.
ConkyJoe89 please (if you can) give an update on her, and where are you reading about her before & after) I legit want to know. Since the day this happened I’m always wondering/hoping she has support and is ok. Is there a way to contact her?
It's so sweet interview, thank you
I cried for her! What a resilient soul after such a tragic event!
Worries about finances? Her employer should have been required to pay for all her expenses!
She successfully sued her employer's estate for $4 million.
Whew, good.
exactly
So true, but I'm certain that the amount of her medical bills, living expenses, etc. far exceed what her employers insurance and she herself could possibly afford, or come up with.
I get why anyone would volunteer to pay for "all her expenses". But, please explain why you think her employer should have been "required" to pay for "all of her expenses"?
She’s so pure. I just can’t imagine the pain..
I would watch Meredith & Charla catch up anytime. I can feel both of their warm hearts through this video🧡
Her speech has come so far, it’s incredible.
This is gonna sound super negative but if this happened to me, I would've ended my own life. There's no way I could stay as positive as this woman.
pretty sure it's impossible to live a normal life after a disfigurement to this degree.
But she looks good again! They made her face look normal again. The bad thing is that she lost her arms
Only true warriors fight through anything
Your nothing to look at.. when was the last time u shaved?? 1973?
Gandalf-DA-Gray me too absolutely me too
"You feel like you're almost normal. You feel like you're a person again." 😭 My heart omg. She should open a GoFundMe :(
Ye
Her friend the chimp owner needs to pay for it chimps are not pets
Her story is sad but touching my god bless this woman & keep her safe.
That was the most confident "I will" I think I've ever heard.
