Are You Too Tight In Your Backswing (Here's How To Check)

  • So many golfers I see are too tight as they go into their backswing. If you are tight going back how do you loosen up on the way down? If you are too tight going back you will be too tight as you hit the ball. This tightness leads to locking your wrists, sending you over the top, causes a chicken wing which adds loft etc.
    Here's a simple way you can check if you are too tight as you go in the backswing. If you find that your arms are too tight then use this as a guide into the future so you can slow down a little and loosen up.
    If you are new to my tips I teach a powerful, effortless, pain-free golf swing. A big part of learning this type of swing is to loosen up. Once loose, you will literally hit the ball better than you ever have in your life and the best part is you can do it for life. You don't have to be strong to be loose.
    So check if you are too tight going into your backswing. If you are start loosening up right away. You'll be glad you did.

    Such a perfect reminder. As many of us remake our swings it appears some of the new methods cause us to tighten up everywhere, myself included. One of your best tips was your video "Greed Not Good" (paraphrasing). When I remove greed I swing so much more relaxed. I hope others reading can take note of this and maybe locate that particular video because I feel this video here aligns perfectly. Thanks again PW!

      New methods. What happened to the old ones? Seems they are onto the next thing that will never work for average players. Oh well, people will figure this out in a few years and be back to the old method. Greed is a killer for sure. Glad you see that. You need to be yourself and swing as hard as you can swing not has hard as Rory. I made this mistake too many years ago so I know all about greed. Be yourself and you will play great golf. Keep at it.

    Locking up leads to hitting it way off the toe, even shanking it off the toe, hitting it way right for the right handed golfer. I did this twice in my last round. I need to make sure I stay looser! Thank you Paul!

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  11 месяцев назад

      Locking up makes you pull up which creates the toe shots. You don't shank it off the toe. You shank it off the hosel so shots you see going on a 45 degree angle out to the right are severely toed shots from hitting and lifting up severely. Stay loose. If you are not try to hit anything why would you look up?

      Thanks. Not sure why everyone thinks they have to hang up the clubs. Doing practice swings at home is the best way to work on your swing. No ball means no distraction of you trying to hit it. If there is no distraction you can make the changes over the winter then play great golf next season as opposed to not practicing then working on it next season when you should be playing great golf. I have literally taught this for years. It's just getting everyone to do it. Just take out a 7 iron and having sitting there. Do daily practice swings doing some of the stuff in my tips and it will be mastered by next season.

    Hi Paul, love the videos.
    I had a question about how to determine what needs adjusting on a swing. For example if I'm slicing the ball with a driver, do I adjust my arm wing, back foot raised, position of set up, grip, hip rotation, arms locking, etc... how do you determine which needs adjusting in order to fix the slice?
    Thanks.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Год назад +2

      Glad you like them. Thanks. As for bad shots your way is just searching for an answer you think might fix it. I see things differently. The ball is the teacher. It will tell you exactly what to do watch for. So this is how simple this is. There are 3 parts to a golf shot spin, direction and contact. Let's leave contact out for a min. Now you have spin and direction. Is slice spin the spin you want on your shots? No. If you are slicing it you would be pull slicing it so you are swinging over the top which is the wrong direction. So you are doing nothing right. If the average person actually figured that out what would they do? Answer: The would tinker and try to hit straight shots hoping they will fix their swing. This is the problem. To hit it straight you need to release the club and you need to fire your body. So this is 2 things. the person is working on 1 thing trying to fix it so they never will. So you work on the spin first. You hit the top and roll it. Roll and roll and hook and hook. Now you got right of the slice spin so you are doing half right. I usually get people to hook 5-10 in a row. As they do that I want them to memorize what this feels like so they can keep doing it without thinking about it. Now we need to straighten it out because those are pull hooks. Right spin wrong direction. So we switch to the lower body. You setup with an alignment stick dead square. Now you hit the top and instead of rolling you fire you hips. I would use the belt buckle trigger. Give it a little legs and allow the club to release. Watch the ball. Previously when you were only rolling you were hitting 50 yard pull hooks. Now you fire the hips a little and you are hitting 20 yards pull hooks. Better but not perfect. So you hit the top and fire even quicker. Now you hit a 10 yard pull hook. Even better but not quite. So now you try to fire the hips as hard as you can and you push it 20 yards right. This is too much so you slow down. Keep firing the lower until you hit it dead straight. Remember this feeling of how much legs you need to put into it then keep firing that much forever. Watch me fix this guy with a massive slice:

      Typically people lose it cause they start swinging way too hard. All sorts of things can fall apart when this happens. Just slow down to 50%. Think coil and hinge going back. Uncoil and rehinge down and through. This is the basis movement. So keep this in mind and do slow easy swings hit it maybe 100 yards. As you get better don't hit harder. Uncoil a little faster with the legs and hips. Slowly build it back up.
