Update! The handbrake was still too far out of balance to pass an inspection, I stripped down the other side and found the mechanism at the end of its travel. I ordered a set of handbrake adjusters that go in place of the 'H bar' on the other side of the shoes, that allowed me to take out all of the slack and now the handbrake cable is far less adjusted up and the handbrake is well balanced!
hi i have had my current volvo 940 TIC auto 1995 model 22 years now i got it with 50000 miles now it has 289400 miles , think your videos are very good keep them coming regards jim
Very interesting. One thing is sure, that cable definitely needed renewal. I just had to have new parking brake shoes on my 90 240 Estate. One had cracked as the backer plate for the friction material had rusted. Still, 31 Ontario, Canada winters will do things like that to a car. I'm pretty sure the 600,000 kilometers had something to do with it too.
Good informative video , I shall now tackle my own handbrake cable . You must be the only person in BERLIN who doesn't get around on a bicycle or public transport
Haha yeah my first experience with them was on my old man's Peugeot 406, notoriously bad even from new 🤣 I have to say though in a recent video I chucked on a set of adjusters and now it's pretty decent
Great vid to describe how to wrangle the handbrake shoes. Can I suggest the next time you dismantle something complex , take a few pics. When I took the drive shaft out of my 940 I even photographed the uni joints so they would go back in the right place.
Putting the springs back on was SO hard for me. The right side cable was destroyed and the bracket rotted off the rear axle. I had a good repair kit, new right cable, and new shoes. I had to loosen the adjustment allll the way to get the cable pins to line up. Then I had to tighten it back up, it works perfect now
The rear brakes are similar on my 2003 XC90. I had to replace rear discs, pads & parking brake shoes. I also replaced the H pieces with adjustable ones. I'm not 100% happy with the parking brake but it was better than before and good enough for the MoT although it failed on other things.
@@Involvod I was thinking it looked like a great idea, I've not long done one on an e46 320d and it was a pig on that so I'm looking forward to working on a well designed car for a change 😉
I briefly had a 940 estate in 2005 as a stop-gap car when my main car was being repaired. It was just a cheap old banger and I didn't know much about Volvos. Now I've watched a few videos about these cars I realise that there was something odd about my example. It looked like an overhead valve engine and I'm now wondering if someone had fitted the engine from an Amazon or a 140. Perhaps they used the 940 engine to update an earlier car. Also, I just did a DVLA check which says the car was manufactured in 1993 but first registered in 2003. It was a right hand drive but I suppose it might have been imported from Ireland.
I don't think so as the cable is thread through holes but rubbing for so many years eventually they go through, especially when the outer casing gets brittle 😬
If handbrake is still un even to pass inspection you can put 240 or v70 handbrake adjustment bolts on both side. Works good. Wonder why 7/940 dont have them.
Yes it was still uneven on the inspection! I checked both sides and they seemed to pull evenly but not according to the tester, going to strip the left side tomorrow but might have to steal from the 240 wagon, so thanks that's good to know!
Or it might do something if you move that cable holder connector thing on rear axle. Worn pins or just a little bit too much on left side. Ive put a few of those, biltema is the seller for those around here.
@@kitakagg I was thinking that might be something to try but wasn't sure if it would help, will have a go tomorrow, the tester said that they both come up together but then the right side takes over and the left stops early, I like the set up but this makes me prefer the 240 independent set up
I think I'll check the cables are equally tight, give the shoes a check over and clean up then if it's still no different I'll start moving/replacing bits. If I understood the tester correctly it failed because it's more than 50% out of balance
There's a really good video on the FCP Euro channel entitled "Volvo 940 Rear Brake Replacement - Increase Stopping Power (740, 960)", I always watch it before working on the hand brake, makes it a lot easier 😊
Had to laugh when the spider jumped out. I would jump too. What about spraying the entire underside with insect surface spray. When they come out, they get sick and die.

Wow, goes to show how great these cars are and you can't get bored of them 🙂
that first one where you dropped the calliper, jokes xD

Thanks! Glad it was helpful. It does seem a bit crazy to have 3 cars in Berlin, if it wasn't for the channel I could never justify it 😄
Finally, I found cool tutorial how to set up break mechanism. Thank you for video.
No problem, thanks for watching some of the oldies 😃
I share your hatred of shoes. That’s the best description of doing them I’ve ever heard - “just fighting with sh*t until they go on” 😂
Oh the joys of drum handbrakes - had them on my 740s, P80 and the P2 🤣 even when they work decently it feels like you are tugging on a wet baguette 🤣
Haha yeah my first experience with them was on my old man's Peugeot 406, notoriously bad even from new 🤣 I have to say though in a recent video I chucked on a set of adjusters and now it's pretty decent
THANK GOD This will be the same for the 745's im very sure as well! I will use this video as reference! ❤❤
GET THAT BUG SPRAY OML
@@dreamsun69 The 240 has them as well, nest must have hatched in there FML

Cheers, yeah it's usually a good idea to, at least with shoes you get a lifeline and have the other side for reference 😄

🤣🤣🤣 what can I say, the spiders have good taste in Cars 😆🤭. Anyway you managed to get it done before the storm so respect .
That's the way to look at it! Thanks mate, seems to always be a storm on here lately
Well I'm glad you made this one mate, my handbrake cable just snapped and I wasn't sure how to go about sorting it 😂
Perfect timing! Glad this will be useful to at least one person 😄 The adjuster is really nice

Fighting with spiders and handbrake cable, doesn't get any better.
If the mechanism wasn't installed right, would that have any bearing on the mashed cable ?

Excellent! educational video!
Makes a change eh!
Them spiders are from Mars 😂
I don't come to this chanel for the "how to". Just a big fan of your mattress.
Haha people still talk about that mattress to this day, it's sorely missed!
I'm gonna say it. That was too many spiders for one car. Surprised you didn't burn it down!

It might have been a good idea, they ended up migrating to all of the cars but I haven't seen one for a while .. 🤞
What size wrenches did you use for the caliper bolts
Oh yes the brakes are very complicated to change (back brakes) 🙁
I find shoes always a bit tricky 😄
Is there nothing you can't fix buddy 👍
Lots, all that stuff I don't upload 🤣
God I hate spiders 🤣
There's even more on the next car 😩
