The first one we’re going to take a look at today is one you’ve probably already seen a lot online recently, this is Open Lara, an incredible port of the original Tomb Raider games!
Next is a really impressive tech demo made by 3DSage, Minecraft for the Game Boy Advance, known as GBA Craft. it’s a little awkward to control, and of course very limited compared to actual Minecraft, but for a 3D demo, this is fantastic!
Lumines is a fan remake that includes the original game as well as a minesweeper mode too!
Cosmic Smash, is a really competent port of the game for GBA, it’s missing a lot of the polish of the Dreamcast game, but the concept still works!
Tyrian is a game that’s been ported so many times over the years to pretty much every computer and console imaginable! What is here for the GBA is a great recreation of the PC original!
Quake GBA only bears a passing resemblance to the actual game, instead this is another interesting 3D tech demo, which lets you move around this small 3D environment.
Bust A Move is a port by Russ Prince is a faithful recreation of the graphics and gameplay, and is in my opinion, so much better than the official release!
Trailblazer for the GBA looks and plays really well, I imagine it’s pretty much the same as the older home computer versions from the 80’s, the controls are nice and responsive and the game has that addicting one more go factor!
The helicopter game, preserved here in GBA format! It plays really well on the GBA and is definitely a good bit of programming, even if it doesn’t really push the system much.
The Another World GBA port retains all the impressive video sequences and super smooth animation which made the game famous back in the early 90’s!
Thunder Force 3 is unfortunately a really early proof of concept with nothing more than a few enemies and the sprites imported.
This is such an amazing achievement to squash down the epic PC game Elite into a GBA rom, this port seems to include all the features of the original, including loads of menu’s that I have no idea what they do!
Super Star Shooter Advance was actually originally made all the way back in 1995 for the amazing Japan only PC, the Sharp X68000, which I’d love to get my hands on one day!
Mortal Kombat, like Thunder Force 3 before it, is another proof of concept demo of a 16 bit console game being ported natively to the GBA
Sonic The Hedgehog Genesis, which released in 2006 was full of bugs and glitches and terrible physics. So, the version you’re looking at here was a fan made creation that was programmed form scratch by Stealth, and much more closely resembles the physics and gameplay of the original!

I absolutely love demakes! If i was any good at coding or had any reasonable connections with coders, I’d have so many ideas to explore XD It’s so heartwarming to see a new wave of coders giving new life to the Color and Advance with homebrews, ROM hacks, fan games, and demakes. Hopefully there’s a bright future for all of us!

@@goatintuxedo2206 Payback is amazing, not just in terms of the graphics and open world, but the physics! Think the only other GBA game that surpasses it in terms of the physics engine is Robot Wars Extreme Destruction.
Also I agree the camera angle in Payback isn't great, its too zoomed in (likely for frame rate reasons) though it would be a lot more bearable if you didn't die in one hit.

    • @goatintuxedo2206
      @goatintuxedo2206 Год назад

@@scottthewaterwarrior the camera is the main problem in this game while using grenades.. you can't see where you throw them and when you advance a bit to see, it blows up in your face. Other than that, i really dig the engine and the exploration aspect is well exploited.

To truly appreciate how impressive OpenLara is, you gotta try it on a machine with slightly imperfect emulation.
I do the vast majority of my GBA gaming on a Powkiddy V90. The hardware isn't the most powerful for some titles. 3D games and anything with video footage are likely to lag or crash. Even the Sonic 1 proof of concept you've shown here struggles on it.
OpenLara is a different story entirely. I was expecting horrendous framerate issues and audio stuttering galore. Instead, it's absolutely perfect. I guess it goes to show how far GBA homebrew has come if programmers can optimise the code that brilliantly. :)

Tyrian 2000 was my all time fave MS DOS game back on the windows 95 computer, I still remember the good ol' days when I used to get the monthly PC magazine and it had a demo of Tyrian 2000 which contained a whopping 7 fully stages with an advert to buy the full game... it wasn't until the year 2010 when I even realized a GBA rom was made for it and I got a Super Card SD that had to decrypt the GBA rom file of Tyrian 2000 so it could run on it and I was mind blown but how much it had even having a full mission mode or something that let you quit each level and get more progress to other stages. After a few years later the battery of it died and It's as shame the modern Everdrive GBA can't run this game as I'd love to live my childhood again... that and if I could put it in a certain folder it would be with the GBC fanmade windows 95 display screen rom that really will take me back to the old days ^^

NGage Tomb Raider port chilling out and similar to the PS1 version. Still for GBA it is pretty cool. Otherwise impressive stuff some of these. Lumines on GBA is something but Minesweeper. That's like Pupo Pupo Tetris levels great value/combining the two.

I wouldn't recommend that version of Elite. It's impressive, and the controls seem well thought out, but it has a couple problems. For one, some of the stars don't move. They appear to move when you maneuver your ship, but are otherwise stationary. While it could be argued that this is realistic as distant stars wouldn't appear to move, the stars in Elite are supposed to move. Looking for points that AREN'T moving, or moving contrary to the rest of the stars is how you spot distant objects like ships, asteroids and space stations. When you have a bunch of stars not moving, it makes it harder to spot stuff. Secondly, I had an enemy ship right in the center of the crosshairs and all my shots were missing. This wasn't a distant enemy either, it was close enough to see the colors of the ship. I had to aim outside the ship to get my shots to register. Which is a shame as it would be a good port if these problems were fixed.
There's another Elite port to the GBA by the same person, but I can't recommend that one either. It starts you in the middle of a fight rather than docked as every other version does, and it seems really flaky.
As for playing the "original" version, the very original for the BBC Micro was slow and would probably seem tedious by today's standards. As would pretty much all of the 8-bit versions. Don''t get me wrong, I loved playing Elite on my C64, but fast it was not. After destroying an enemy, I used to switch to a different view just so that it wouldn't have to render the explosion, slowing down the game.
Also not recommended, the Amiga/ST versions, or the DOS version. The Amiga/ST versions are fast and smooth, but they lack depth. Friendly ship encounters were removed, so every ship you come across is an enemy, which basically turns the game into an arcade shooter, rather than a simulation. It feels "empty". The original DOS version is in ugly CGA 4-color mode. Elite Plus has nicer graphics, but did away with the keyboard controls for things like hyperspace, so you're forced to use the icons rather than pressing a key. Also, both games are hard to get running at the proper speed in DOSBox. If you turn up the cycles until they're nice and smooth, the enemy ships dart around so fast that you can't hit them, they can drain your shield in a couple seconds, but the shields also recharge much faster than they should. Turn the cycles down to get a playable speed and the games get choppy.
There's the Archimedes version, which is regarded as great since you're no longer the center of attention and other ships go about doing their own thing. I couldn't figure out how to use a joystick in the emulators and I can't play it using mouse control.
If you want an updated version, there's Elite: The New Kind for Windows. It's a modern version of the BBC Micro original. It looks great and plays very well. If you want something even newer, I recommend Oolite. Despite the author's claims that it's not a copy of Elite, it is 100% a copy of Elite in everything but the name. Same star maps, same planet names, same cargo options, same ship equipment, etc. However it has the option of easily adding extras to the game. Want rings on some of the planets? Just drop the rings add-on into the Add-ons directory and the game will use it. I have to say that it can be unfair at times though. It's not unusual to get jumped by a swarm of 10+ pirates. And the one time I encountered a Thargoid ship, it was just continuous laser fire from it until I was dead. Not sure how you're supposed to survive that...

It is spelt Lumines of course so I assume it's how it sounds literal and lowercase wise (compared to other titles of games where sounds are like capitals for other titles or extent of accent).

I don't find the Mortal Kombat port that impressive; Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance managed to cram a 3D fighting game on the GBA with rotating arenas and sprite scaling to make opponents look like they're getting closer or farther away, and I think that's way more impressive.

It's still disappointing to realize just what the GBA was capable of, but most devs and publishers were too preoccupied with cranking out loads of shitty, fake-3D isometric licensed junk. There was even a tech demo for _Resident Evil 2_ that one studio made as a proof of concept and it played fairly smoothly, but nope; apparently what we needed instead was a 487th 3/4 top-down view game based on a Nickelodeon cartoon.
