  • This is the first in a series of tutorials which look at some of the Force's advanced concepts and capabilities. The envelope follower is an extremely powerful modulation tool, and in this episode I show you what it does, how to set it up, and give three examples of creative ways to use it in your music.

    finally someone explained what those parameters do in envelope follower. Thank you.

      No problem, the manual is pretty vague sometimes so I’m glad this helped! 🙂

    HYST is probably for “Hysteresis” which is a lag time from when a threshold is met to when an action is taken.

  • @arnar_gretars
    @arnar_gretars 2 года назад +5

    Hys stands for hysteris. Hysteris is basically the threshold for closing the gate but its dependant on the main threshold. So hysteris amount is essentially how big the gap is between your main threshold (opens gate) and your other threshold (gate closes).
    Hope that makes sense, kinda hard to put into words

      Yeah agreed I heard this in explaining room thermostats - stops them constantly switching on and off again as heat comes to right temperature in a room heating switches off so room temp drops a fraction heater switches back on … built in hysteresis in the switch widens the gap to stop rapid on and off - this principle is in loads of electronics

    The Envelope Follower is 1 the Force's most underrated features. Thanks for making this.

      Akai should label it as ‘modulation source’ or something like that, rather than envelope follower. Think more people would explore it that way!

    That third example with stutter will be used especially because it is way more difficult to do without this feature - I think. Informative and thank you.

      Yeah the stutter effect can be a bit overwhelming if it’s on full, so this takes it a bit. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it! 🙂

    If you have a track to spare you can use prepared noise loops as LFOs or all sorts of rhythmical devices.

    Really well thought out video. I appreciate the clear and concise information. Off-topic question: is that a pen, or a screen stylus, and if it's the latter, does it work with the Force? I would love to be able to have more precision when drawing automation, etc.

    • @MaxipokMusic
      @MaxipokMusic  2 года назад +1

      It’s an Apple Pencil, doesn’t work on Force, was just using it as a pointer! However the type of stylus that works on Android phones does work apparently, haven’t tried it myself so can’t recommend a specific model though.

      Thanks, I’m glad you found it useful! It’s an Apple Pencil, and it doesn’t work with the Force, I was just using it as a pointer. But I have seen people say that the capacitive ones that work with Android phones also work with Force, haven’t tested that personally though.

    is there any way to set an envelope follower to trigger midi notes? i was thinking using an audio source to trigger drum sounds at different velocities. or can it only effect “knobs”?

    I really didn’t understand what an envelope follower is - it feels a bit like a vocoder where one signal wave modulates the other. Does that sound crazy?

    • @MaxipokMusic
      @MaxipokMusic  2 года назад +1

      Yeah you were along the right lines. It’s a bit like an LFO but generated by an audio signal rather than an oscillator…

    Can the envelope follower on and off be automated?

  • @DanBrazil-brazilianx
    @DanBrazil-brazilianx 2 года назад

    Great video. I can only see the destination parameter for Insert 1 but Insert 2 is what I'm after and that's not showing. Any reason why that might be? I wasn't looking at the pad effects it turns out - just the effects on the overall track - but when I located said track it was there.
    Just out of curiosity, what parameter would you automate for the soft clipping distortion you mentioned?

    • @MaxipokMusic
      @MaxipokMusic  2 года назад +1

      Hi Dan, glad you got it working! I’d probably point it at the mix, and set up a second one pointing at the gain maybe. Generally just play around with it until I find something that sounds nice. In the individual macros you create on the right hand side there will be parameter range controls you can tweak too, they can make a big difference.

    Just watching your vid...I'm looking for a way to stack samples which then react to different midi velocities. I have a Roland V-DRUMS kit which I want to stack different snares for example to be triggered at different velocities. This was pretty easy to do with MPC4000 and S6000, but I can't seem to find any advanced 'sampling' facilities on the FORCE (which I love BTW). Any ideas?

    • @MaxipokMusic
      @MaxipokMusic  2 года назад

      Hi! Yep it can be done. You can stack up to 4 sample layers per pad. If you then go to Track Edit > Global, you will see a Layer Play option. If you set it to velocity, it will let you trigger the different sample layers via velocity. I haven’t actually played around with this myself so don’t know off hand how you set the relative velocities, but this should get you going. I’ll explore this and make a video about it…

      @@MaxipokMusic Thanks for that. I printed off the original manual but finding stuff in it is really difficult. I think the older manuals were written by Hollow Sun (who died about a decade ago now) but were great resources. I'm about to dig my 'Bob Clearmountain Sample CD' out from c. 1993...

    • @MaxipokMusic
      @MaxipokMusic  2 года назад

      @@fredflintstone1428 Know what you mean, I lose the Will to live whenever I look at the manual. There isn’t a huge amount of Force videos, but on the sampling side it’s exactly the same as the modern MPCs, which have a ton of tutorial videos. So if you can’t find a Force-specific vid, at least for sampling, the MPC creators can help. (I am slowly trying to rectify this situation 😀)
