I bought the player upgrade at the moment it was available. I downsized from stage to the player and now I'm able to use my old presets with 8 effects again. Totally worth it. I think you have to differentiate between updates (like qol or bug fixing) which should always be free and upgrades that bring you new features. This is not a subscription model as these charge you regularly for just using the same stuff. Yes, it's not much to buy the full unlock upgrade for 300 € ! You only get one or two good pedals for that. But if you follow the practices of the competition, Kemper is breaking new ground, which is met with incomprehension by a large part of the community. Customer loyalty through continuous new software updates has always been a reason to buy the Kemper. Product maintenance should not be subject to a paywall. I am reminded here of the Eventide H9 , now H90 ! At the end of the day, it's about customer loyalty to a product, which in my opinion is best achieved through customer-friendly product maintenance that is not hidden behind a paywall. Another reason for the rumbling in the community is the fact that the player would have been able to cover the bandwidth that can now be purchased via the upgrades right from the start. This leaves many with a bitter aftertaste, which is linked to the question: “Would I have bought the player for €1000?” - Food for thoughts! So, in the end, it's a personal decision whether it's worth the money. I hope for Kemper that this business model does not have a negative effect on the good reputation that the company has earned. Just my 2 cents!
simple as this really, they hardware restricted a competing piece of gear then dangled a carrot above the head of everybody who's just paid for it purely to earn close to 50% more per customer, this whole "they knew what they was buying" is simply not good enough, you know what goes through the head of guitar freaks who think the next OD pedal is going to change their entire career and this is no different they've just preyed on it instead, that kemper player could do everything at launch but they've held it back to earn more money, and to top it off they did it in a TIER SYSTEM, kemper didnt invest any RND into these updates it was already there when the product released the'yre just playing mind games with their customers.
Then you'd be better off buying a device from Fractal, Line 6 or IK Multimedia, as this guarantees that after a few years you'll need a new product that's state-of-the-art.

I told C. Kemper years ago not to mix upgrades and updates. All updates (bug fixes) from the last 10 years also include new functions (upgrades) and customers have now become accustomed to not paying for upgrades. Other companies simply bring new devices onto the market and old devices are only provided with bug fixes. Now the bargain hunters who calculated that they would get a full Kemper for free for 700 bugs have been wrong and there is a lot of complaining. C. Kemper had announced, however, that the upgrades would be subject to a charge.
It's a pity guitarists commenting all over social media and YT didn't take 10 seconds of their precious time to read the Kemper website. "NOTE: Of course the Level UPGRADES do not replace the traditional free software and feature UPDATES tradition. I think your take on this is the right one... If you're short on money (like most of us), you can buy the base-product with the same quality profiles, but lesser options. You can save money, and later upgrade to an (almost) full Kemper. You'll have paid $1000, still A LOT less than if you bought the Stage ($1600). I think this is incredible value...
But for this price you can buy four TonexOne units which captures are better than Kemper's. C'mon people, be reasonable. Upgraded Dimehead NAM player, the most accurate prifiler/player is 580$. Kemper is history.
Compared to what similar devices cost, 700 € is not really cheap, as you pay for way more DSP power than necessary for what the Player offers. And the updates have zero newly developed things, they were already priced in. The cost for the updates are completely artificial and bloated, just so it fits the Kemper lineup.
Seems the bigger issue with the kemper is consumers rightly assuming that if one company can justify charging for new content then everyone else will start that practice if there’s profit to be had At least with kemper the hardware costs less and now that customers understand the full costs they can make a better informed choice between competing options But no one is happy the idea of their rig being a subscription
The subscription model has already started, all devices such as ToneX or QuadCortex, which can only be fully operated in conjunction with the corresponding company cloud, are a preparation for this cash cow.
So what happens when you buy a new kemper player in a few months? Will they come with upgraded firmware? Or will they ALWAYS be sold with the "old" firmware, expecting that the paid update is purchased? Will you have new users that already have the "paid" firmware with new units, and old users that supported the company that now have to pay extra? I purchased the $300 upgrade and I think it is great. I am glad Kemper did it this way. It would have sucked if they simply released a player 2.0 and I had to buy new hardware. The FM3 vs the FM3 turbo is a bit of a different story. They keep releasing firmware updates for the FM3 standard with the same features as the mark II turbo. that's what happens when you buy an overpriced product with reduced functionality because it's super hype - Kemper is not the "bad guy" here, stupid people always create their own problems by themselves
I'll try to keep this brief, but that probably won't happen, lol. I work with tech, both software and hardware, and the coding industry is an absolute nightmare right now. I don't believe they are holding back updates intentionally, as coders learn to code better and Hardware is better understood, they discover they can do things they couldn't before. I cite every single generation of game consoles and the comparison of day one games versus games at the end of that console's life cycle. Night and day. A game changer is as simple as this does it allow you to do a thing you couldn't do before? Yes? Game changer. You could have decided years ago to have a collection of nice amps like jarrod's, or you could be a dipshit and spend your money on drugs and overpriced sodas and video games that you don't really need. You could have saved your money and bought a full price quad cortex. These updates allow you to spread your spending out, buy the unit, buy the updates later rather than having to buy the entire full price unit at once. I don't know, maybe you have to be old enough to have lived in the pay $5,000 to have a halfway decent sounding amp days.
Usually you talk with some common sense. So, why can a company like Headrush make the core that offers every effect, modeled amp (which Kemper doesnt) and the cloning, including a big built in touch screen all for 700.00, but we feel we need to justify why Kemper is using the same effects algorithms and operating system (meaning they didn't put a lot of work in the update, because the only adjustments they made was for the slight variations in UI as in less switches, and everything else including the chipsets are the same) so the software development was paid for years ago! This is a pure profit play! Same with the hardware it's a 14 year hardware in a new form factor to hide that. Another thing is how do people not realize at this point the tech gets cheaper over time! It's why we can buy flat screen tv's for 200.00 now. The profiler s should have had all the effects and features from day one and been able to profile for 750.00, but especially if they want to charge a 1000.00 or should be able to profile! This compared to other parts of the market os not a good value!
Common everyone knows your mom is the better shredder and that SLO is hers. The issue is not so much paying for an upgrade as it is they are no longer competitive in price with the other companies similar products coming out. It wasn’t an issue when it was just them trying to compete with the FM3, but now Kemper has to compete with the other bandwagon
I think they beilieved they would get the upgrade for free because Kemper is known for it. They don't realise that they should never expect anything after the purchase of any gear unless it is officially announced otherwise it's just speculation.. Especially when it involves the full feature set of the $1,600 Stage for free on a unit priced at $700 which was never going to happen.. Plus don't rule out some mischief from competitors stirring the poop.
The people will speak with their wallet. If kemper thinks they are in a position to go the subscription route, great, we will see how it works out. Waves tried it, and it backfired on them. Other companies do it, and it worked out for them.
kemper is going to outsmart them selves right out of business. they have a platform that is 10 years old maybe more and they are milking it for all they can. all I can say is when they make enough people upset and know one buys it any more, well then it is to late. every one do yourselves a big favor. save your money and buy the qc. You will thank yourself for it. Buy Jerrods profiles they are the best.
Yeah, such a huge overreaction from people. It's as if they expected a €700 device to get features to brings it (almost) on parity with a €1600 device (Stage) for free. Absolutely laughable. That said, as a bedroom player, I think the price is a bit steep for me. Also, keep in mind that Kemper have said that the Player will continue to receive FREE updates for a long time. Btw, I have also talked about that an upgrade is way better than having to buy another "Kemper Player Pro" unit. Paid upgrade is amazing as a concept. You can optionally upgrade your unit. Sure, you can compare it against modelers that have a ton of free updates, like L6 or Fractal, but that's not at all the same type of device. And I feel like I need this disclaimer on all posts, but I don't have a Kemper today, nor any modeler, so these are just my observations as an outsider.
It's hilarious how guitarists who spend years and years continuously buying/selling/trading gear, losing money on every transaction, then cry about a 179 Euro or 299 Euro paid uograde on a piece of gear they love. Considering, it's paid for in one set of one gig.
Now we have proven that "micro transactions" work in the guitar gear industry, thank you for supporting this stupid bullshit. You get what you deserve, and now you pay A LOT for unlocking features that should be FREE 😂😂😂

All the mechanics watching this are like... "that's all additional features cost? wow..." 😂
Yeah the game changer talk I agree is very lame and stupid.
Has anyone else's Rig Manager App stopped working?
I don't even own one and I'm bitchin.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you like the presets.
Of all the top brands, Neural are the ones most lightly to follow suit with paid updates. The new Nano reeks of it.
Tonex
Kissing corpo boots. Not a good look
its okay to charge money for that, its just overpriced.

I didn't pay to unlock any features, I'm happy with my original Kemper Head and I'm leaving my Player on Level 1, stock.
