After this Olympics, this rule got pulled off.

People try to give Gardner a hard time, since his weight and positioning was a major strategy against karelins signiture lift. But here's the thing. Yea, karelin made a mistake that cost him a point, but Karelin wasnt able to score 1 single point against Gardner the entire match. No doubt Gardner was extremely talented to keep this monster at bay for so long, securing the victory. I also wonder what would have happened if karelin didnt reposition his hands/grip. He obviously did it because he sensed the position he was in was becoming disadvantageous. Perhaps he would have be taken down.
True, and Gardner was successful at the judges not getting a single penalty point due to passivity (that he deserved, anyway) I think that was the game, and not the wrestling.

Wrestling has always had a problem with playing it safe being the best tactic, this is a shame of a fight, the rules at the time were just dumb. 3 passitivities by the american and he wins ? I'm glad it got changed, none of this guys tried any technique for 9 minutes, they are 130kg so it's rather normal but its just a shame.

People try to give Gardner a hard time, since his weight and positioning was a major strategy against karelins signiture lift. But here's the thing. Yea, karelin made a mistake that cost him a point, but Karelin wasnt able to score 1 single point against Gardner the entire match. No doubt Gardner was extremely talented to keep this monster at bay for so long, securing the victory.
I also wonder what would have happened if karelin didnt reposition his hands/grip. He obviously did it because he sensed the position he was in was becoming disadvantageous. Perhaps he would have be taken down.
I wonder who would have won If the rules weren't changed after America petitioned for It ?
True, and Gardner was successful at the judges not getting a single penalty point due to passivity (that he deserved, anyway) I think that was the game, and not the wrestling.

Karelin made a mistake at first round trying too much to lift this heavyweightdude and losing strenght. Perhaps olympic comittee also wanted somebody else to win gold by making Karelin to compete two maches before finals.

Wrestling has always had a problem with playing it safe being the best tactic, this is a shame of a fight, the rules at the time were just dumb. 3 passitivities by the american and he wins ? I'm glad it got changed, none of this guys tried any technique for 9 minutes, they are 130kg so it's rather normal but its just a shame.
