I have never commented on any sewing channel, (but viewed many) I am giving you the highest compliment I can think of, Your precision, ~ your method of sewing, your level of fitting / basting/ hand hemming and finishing details are as close to my mother who was the the best/ seamstress/ tailor that I knew. She grew up in a family of 13 and had to learn to sew from childhood for herself and her sisters and did well into her 80ss as she was never happy with RTW that did not fit as well as she could sew. She re used quality buttons, zippers ( later on knit cuffs and collars from dads shirts and whatever she could, yet today they think this is a new idea!!!( it isnt) You remind me of her in other ways also, she did dress well no matter where she went, in fact one would say her preference was to be a tidge overdressed and never ever slopplly dressed, She preferred her straight skirts, blouses and wore them daily, even when everyone around her wore jogging suits out to lunch, or shopping bc it was how she was raised from the old country , they didnt have much and wore nice clothing to the grocery store! @@LiftingPinsandNeedlesall your efforts are worth it! I also have found it hard to find anyone on RUclips who is as thorough and informative as you Karina, and I have watched hundreds of sewing videos. You are such a font of knowledge Karina, thank you for sharing with your viewers in such away that is so clear and the visuals are simple, no fuss, and easy to replicate. You have definitely enriched my life.
I have been sewing forever and never saw this method of changing shoulder width. This is brilliant!!!! You are so great to share all these wonderful fitting methods. Thank you
Thanks! Just having an opportunity to catch up with you after an absence. Thank you for your patience, thoroughness, and sharing your vast knowledge with us.
Such helpful information. I'm 62 and have recently made myself a couple of items, I haven't made clothes for myself for 30 years and I never fully understood fitting properly. Your videos are amazingly helpful. Thank you.
Oh my goodness! You have just blown my mind with this video. I KNOW I don't have narrow shoulders but almost all of my tops and dresses suggested to me that they were narrow! I thought the problem also stemmed from me only being 5' 2". And when I tried altering the neck lines, it made my arm scythe too tight - so I thought my arms are just too heavy. I learn so much from you. I've only been sewing for 3 1/2 years so your expertise and time teaching us is so appreciated! Thank you.
Karina ~ I just tried your shoulder seam adjustment, and it worked beautifully for me! I made the Pattern Emporium Keep it Simple Babe short sleeve knit t-shirt. The first t-shirt fit everywhere really well, except the shoulder seams were a bit too high on my shoulders. She has you choose your size based on your upper bust already, so that helped me be more certain that it wasn't a bust issue. For my second iteration, I adjusted the shoulders 1/2" wider using your approved method, and it was just what my knit t-shirt needed! I'm now ready for when my good fabric gets here to make a shirt that fits me beautifully, and will hopefully last a long time! You are an amazing teacher! I so appreciate your content - the fit techniques, the sewing techniques, and definitely the styling! Thank you!
SO HELPFUL----I started making blouses using high bust measurement, adj bust lower and larger, and sway back adj by adding a back seam. First time in 40 yrs of sewing I get a perfect fit. Thank you thank you thank you for ALL your videos. 😊
What a time saver! This is so nice, I'm small framed and don't have wide shoulders but have a full D-size bust, and have to do a lot of adjustments. This will be so much quicker!
thank you, thank you, thank you! I've been struggling with this issue for literally decades. I think you may have shown me how to solve my problem. Off to see if I have some fabric in my stash to try this with.
Thank you so much! I could not find a pattern in my correct size plus, I saw it on Sew Essential and the gal, Lucy, who is not big busted said she would size up. So, knowing this, I think I could do a shoulder length adjustment on one size up and be fine. Yes, your method 3 is the best. Thank you for a great tutorial!
This is so helpful! I can’t thank you enough. I have had shoulder problems for ever. I have tried adjusting before but I’ve never really enjoyed them. This looks so much easier. I’ll start with my bust adjustment first.
Karina, this is amazing! I am so glad you did this video. I really needed this adjustment. It makes so much sense and I have never seen it done this way before. Thank you so much fior sharing this method.
I really can't see how those two would collide. There's probably something else going on like a forward shoulder adjustment or a high round back situation.
Thank you, I have completed a FBA, swayback adjustment then I didn’t like the fit of the shoulders so I altered to narrow shoulder like your video. Now the back seems tight, do you think I need to start over with a different size? I’m trying to fit a tee shirt top and used my high bust measurement plus an inch more. Thank you for your consideration in answering my question.
This is the second time that I have watched this video and I absolutely love it. Even in my youth when I was much thinner, I was a bit narrow in the shoulder. Now I’m much larger in the bust so using the pattern size for the upper bust is crucial. I’m also only 5’3” so most patterns are drafted for taller bodies. So all your videos on fitting are taking the pain out of my fitting issues. First, I’m going to reduce length in the upper chest and upper hip where I’m shorter. Then I will adjust for a full bust and afterwards move the dart to right spot (probably lower). Than I can do a narrow shoulder adjustment. I’m guessing it will probably be 1/2” to 5/8”. I have used some of the other options you showed in the past, but I absolutely love the one you prefer. I can’t thank you enough for your content. It has made me more excited about sewing for myself.
Just discovered your channel. Thank you. Your explanations are the most comprehensive I’ve found so far. Now I’m gonna go home and check the shoulder on this dress where I cant lift my arms in it lol. I do another test piece with a FBA first
This was so helpful! Thank you for all of your time and effort you put into this. I am saving this to refer to back to when needed. You mentioned that certain patterns you always have to adjust the shoulder seam. Can you give me some of the ones that run larger? I have had to make shoulder adjustments all my sewing life. But maybe it’s the bust not fitting right. Who knows! I wish I could afford a mannequin to try my projects to fit my body. Oh well…
Hi..that was the best demo video i have ever watched..i loved the examples you gave about what happens if you chose a different size pattern..but even tho i loved your video my shoulder length is fine..i have forward thrust shoulder- i was wondering a better way to tackle that adjustment..thankyou for sharing..♡♡♡♡ i am going to view more of your videos..😊
Thank you so much for the shoulder adjustment. I haven't been satisfied with any of the other ways to do this. My shoulders are very broad and were (once upon a time) very muscular. This is perfect.
Thank you for this great tutorial! Can you please consider making a tutorial for your favorite Forward Shoulder Adjustment too, and how to alter the sleeve head accordingly. It's difficult trying to find a good one, and you demonstrate things so well. It would be very helpful :-)
Mind blown!!! I have a small bust and my shoulders never fit in my tops!! I recently sized up 2 sizes in the Wardrobe by Me Wardrobe Builder tee and now my shoulders are better but the bust area is a bit loose. It's wearable but wow, never thought about the SBA! You're a genius! Thank you.
ThankYou for your knowledge, I enjoy your tutorials so very much! I do have narrow shoulders, I have a four inch difference between my upper bust, and my full bust. The commercial patterns that we have don’t show these measurements, or the final measurements, so very frustrating. I am slowly learning . Thanks again, greetings from Canada 🇨🇦
Fitting is such a challenge but your vlog was so useful. I’ve just made a toile of a top which is way too big on the shoulder so the bust adjustment and then, possibly, a small shoulder adjustment might just be the answer. It has a front and back yoke too, so your video gives me so much to work on. Thank you. 😄
At last, I think you will be the PERFECT person to teach me what I need to learn. How do I know exactly where the shoulder seam should be placed? I have watched several of your videos, plus others, but this SPECIFIC information has not yet been provided to help me. I can feel the outer edge of the shoulder bone area plus if I move my shoulder around, my fingers can find a small indentation at the top of the arm, closer to my neck than the outer area mentioned above. Can you help make this easier and more simple for me? Many thanks.
Thank you for sharing these methods - so helpful🥰 Could you please demonstrate how to make a narrow shoulder on a raglan sleeve pattern also? I have searched for that but I haven't seen anyone doing a video about it.
This info is VERY useful when making a new garment with a pattern but how can I narrow the shoulders on a purchased, already sewing garment. Can you make a video on how to do that? Love your content and expertise!
Thanks so much for the detailed video Katrina. I found your explanations of why you wouldn't use those other three methods super helpful in then understanding why your preferred method is the "simplest". Great to see this method demonstrated on different types of tops too.
This genius! Thanks so much Karina, as always your tips, tricks and knowledge is greatly appreciated :) This is going to help me so much, I have had hours of frustration incorrectly trying to adjust the armscye and sleeve when all I needed to do was what you've just showed us. Thanks again!! 🤩🌷
Haha - I use the quick and dirty method no. 2. But I will use the adjustment no. 4. Too bad I have just cut out a jacket! Thank you so much for all the time and effort you have put into this video. It is incredibly helpful to so many of us.
Oh wow this make so much sense, I have a real struggle with broad shoulders and back and have tried a couple of the first methods you show and they really don't work well, especially paired with similar broad back adjustments. I'm now wondering if a larger size and small bust adjustment along with your shoulder adjustment maybe the answer I need.
Thank you so much for this fitting series. I have very narrow shoulders but a large bust for my frame size. Even with fbas I have had trouble getting a good fit, mainly with gaping necklines. It all makes so much sense now. You are a real gem. Thank you from New Zealand.
Hi Karina, Thanks for this fantastic video. I’ve never made any sort of fitting adjustment, I make whatever it is, hoping it will fit! I like the way you’ve explained the shoulder/bust cup relationship so I really want to do this successfully! This may be a silly question but how do I work out how much I need to add or subtract to get the correct shoulder measurement? Do I measure my shoulders and the pattern pieces to find out?
Karina, these are again very clear and clever instructions. I have learned a lot from them. One question: my "shoulder problem" is more about the slope. Mine are straighter than usual on patterns. Would you rather change it around the sleeve (and change the length of the sleeve arm scye) or around the neckline (and change the length of that)?
Thank you for this technique! On my current project I want to both narrow the shoulder as well as reduce the puffiness of the very generous sleeve cap. Method 2 will let me do both together. I agree with your assessment that the bodice is probably just too big, but I already graded down a size below what is printed on the used pattern I’m working from. I needed the 14-18 size, but found it only in 20-24. It’s meant to be a loose fit button-close bodice dress, so perfect tailoring isn’t critical. I’d rather narrow the shoulder than mess with the sleeve anymore. I already added a full bicep adjustment and an inch of length. I also added a side dart, and adjusted the bust point. I’ve made 2 toiles, so I want to get on with it.
Great information. My issue at the shoulder is with the slope of my shoulders. I had problems with back neckline gaping in different garments until a friend pointed out that I have quite square shoulders. I have to take a small wedge out of the pattern starting at the neckline and ending at the shoulder seam. Someone with very sloping shoulders would need to do the opposite. Something else to show perhaps. Your purple jacket is gorgeous. I love that colour but it doesn't suit me at all.
Very useful information. What would you recommend if you have wide shoulders and a bust size in-between A and B cup (1 3/8")? Just a wide shoulder adjustment or both a wide shoulder adjustment and a small bust adjustment?
I’d go with the small Bust adjustment because that will get you the correct shoulder size. I think shoulder adjustment come after sorting out the bust.
The Nancy Zieman method does not change the shoulder or armhole in any way. No hinging. My narrow shoulder is about an inch. Well worth a look at her book.
@@dianedean521 I actually don’t. It’s not an adjustment I’ve even needed to do but I suggest looking for content by Alexandra Morgan on the topic. She makes 100% sense to me.
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles Thank you for that suggestion and I just watched her podcast last night. You are my favorite, so I deferred to your way first but if you agree with hers, then I’m good.😊
Karina, I love your videos , you are so knowledgeable. I have had an issue with sewing sleeves, for some reason I can cut them exactly by the pattern, but as I go to match the seams one side is always longer, and woven there's no give to adjust. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you ☺️
Are you talking about woven sleeves? They are supposed to be longer than the armhole. They rarely fit one to one as knit sleeves do. You can see a video on sleeves here ruclips.net/video/P_ytL24WZwU/видео.html
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles at the wrist I am new with this, when I match the seams at side bodice to sleeves the wrist is a tad longer on one side on both woven and knit. How do I sew it?
Fantastic tutorial. I'm about to make a tropical shirt. There's quite a bit of ease around the bust. So do I choose size close to my upper bust and then do small shoulder. Or do I match shoulder fit then do fba? My bust difference is just under 2 inches. I've just binned a boxy shirt toile after doing a small shoulder on it so any tips would help 🙏🏼
Doesn’t the tropical shirt have a raglan sleeve? Then shoulder adjustments are very different and usually not too necessary. I’d contact the designer at wardrobe by me for specific fitting like this. The boxy shirt is meant to be a dropped shoulder, so I don’t see why you’d want to change it when the style calls for it.
Very clever method! Thank you. Do you have any suggestions for adjusting a raglan sleeve? I have tried and tried various methods, but finally just gave up making any patterns with raglan sleeves, because the finished garment always pulls across at shoulder height. I have a small bust, so it is not my bust that is taking fabric away from the shoulders.
The thing is that with a smaller bust, If you are choosing your size based on your full bust, you end up making a size too small for the shoulders. So I’d size up one size to fit the shoulders and then do a small bust adjustment to fit the bust. I discussed this a lot in the video :) The bust does not take fabric away from the shoulders as you say. You just need to size up :)
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles Yes, I did watch the whole video! 😉😀 Just wondered if there was something different to do for raglans. I will try as you suggest and hope for the best!
Thank you so much for this. I gained 2 inches in my bust and for the life of me the sleeves never fit correctly when going up according to the pattern sizing. Yet garments that I made before fit (a little tighter around the bust) and the sleeves are perfect. I’ve been trying to get the sleeve correct on the larger pattern size to no avail. Now I realize that I can use the same pattern size and just do a full bust adjustment to accomodate my C cup.
Very helpful video! I always have to do a minor shoulder adjustment. Actually one shoulder is narrower than the other. 🤔 I have always done #2, the "down and dirty" one, and most recently on a knit cardi, the sleeve did not fit. 😢 So thank you for this, I need to just do it.
This is so useful Karina, thank you! Question regarding the adjustment on the yoke piece. Does it matter whether the sleeve pivot point is above the horizontal seam line for the rest of the back piece?
@@dipsy552 facings don’t usually involve the shoulder unless it’s for a sleeveless facing and in that case, you’d have to make new facings for the armholes. For sleeved garments, I don’t see how the shoulder would affect a neckline facing.
This is so informative! I’ve stopped it halfway to go and check my bust size! I have a very small upper bust…but am a 32d…… does this mean I need a fba? I always thought it was my shoulders! If I pick the garment up at the top (ie shoulders) and lift it up the garment always looks better but then I don’t know what to adjust! Help? Please!!
Are you referring to your sewing cup size? Or your bra cup size? It’s not the same. If you have a sewing D cup it means your upper bust is 4” smaller than your bust and yes you’d need an FBA and then the shoulder would fit better. If you are pulling them up… are you petite? Narrow shoulder and a shorter armhole are two different things.

Thank you so much!!! You have the best way to adjust the shoulder 🤗
This is incredibly helpful! Thanks.
You’re very welcome 😀😀
GREAT explanation Karina, thank you so much.
The shoulder slope is another topic I’m preparing separately :)
I can’t really develop the topic in a comment here.
I don’t like the pivot and slide method. I don’t find it exact.
Great lesson! I have wide shoulders and forward shoulders. Which adjustment is done 1st?
@@dianedean521 it doesn’t matter. They are different adjustments that don’t affect each other.
Do you have a special way of doing forward shoulders?
@@dianedean521 I actually don’t. It’s not an adjustment I’ve even needed to do but I suggest looking for content by Alexandra Morgan on the topic. She makes 100% sense to me.

Thank you for that suggestion and I just watched her podcast last night. You are my favorite, so I deferred to your way first but if you agree with hers, then I’m good.😊
Amazing tutorial thank u again karina❤
Great video!!! Very helpful ☺️. Thank you.
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles i will watch the video, thank you so much ❤️ 😊. I always learn from your videos
Great info as usual! Thank you!!
Any time!
Que divina….thank you Karina…very informative. Thank you for taking the time for this instruction 💋💨
Love your channel, thanks for your help.💕
I discussed this a lot in the video :)
The bust does not take fabric away from the shoulders as you say.
Yup! That’s the way :)
This makes so much sense!
Oh. My. Goodness. You blew my mind
Fantastic, excellent!
This is so useful Karina, thank you! Question regarding the adjustment on the yoke piece. Does it matter whether the sleeve pivot point is above the horizontal seam line for the rest of the back piece?
I’d want the pivot point as low as possible.
Would you then have to reduce or increase any facings by the amount you adjust the shoulder?
@@dipsy552 facings don’t usually involve the shoulder unless it’s for a sleeveless facing and in that case, you’d have to make new facings for the armholes. For sleeved garments, I don’t see how the shoulder would affect a neckline facing.
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles ok, thank you!
Very clear!
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles oh thank you for your super quick reply. Yes, I’m only 5ft tall. I have found your videos really helpful, thanks
Ps it almost 4” difference…pulling tape measure tight =4!
Ok so this video will really help you adjust for your height ruclips.net/video/ygNl_jmQo8g/видео.html
