The original series was shot on film and then mastered to tape which was broadcast and later released on DVD, for the Blu Ray they actually went back to the original film elements and completely remastered the show, which is why it looks so damn good. There's actually a few scenes here and there that are clearly from a tape source, most of those circumstances are probably times when they edited it on tape for convenience, notably the scene where the giant has that orb thing transferred to Cooper and the scene with Audrey and Windom Earle in the library.
The thing about packaging I'm going to assume is a cultural thing to americans. We europeans view this type of packaging as the default for shows, where lots of discs have to be printed. I get that it's bad for DVDs because those things are prone to scratching, but bluray discs will survive this packaging just fine.
Oh, yes; you are correct. Blu-rays are far more scratch resistant than DVDs. Thinking back, my main qualm with the packaging was not so much that they would get scratched, but just that the packaging was so cheaply-constructed and flimsy, that the tab inserts to keep the discs in place felt like they were always going to fall out or break. But that's nothing to say of the quality of the discs themselves; the Twin Peaks blu-ray set looks and sounds awesome! Cheers!
Hey Dude, stop complaining about the packaging. It allowed the price of the set to be low enough for you to afford buying it. I have the same set and don’t have any problem with it’s design. In fact. I own several tv series boxed this way and have never had a problem with any of them. I am thankful of the low price point made possible by the lower cost of the packaging. Suck it up and just enjoy purchase.
Eh, I'm of mixed opinions about packaging like this. Ultimately TV shows with many episodes have a dilemma when it comes to packaging because it either involves stacking the discs to make it take up very little space, or it's nice packaging but with a higher price point and takes up more space. In the end I've become accustomed to stacking based packaging and don't mind it too much. Even with sets that are dvd not bluray I haven't had a stacked disc be scratched to the point of unplayability but it does always make me nervous with DVDs because I have seen small scratches. With blurays I've never had any issues. The biggest issue is having to carefully take out multiple discs and search around for the specific episode you want to watch.
No way, that packaging is awful! Consumers shouldn't just accept anything that is put out for people to purchase. Consumers should demand more from companies they pay money to.
The packaging could've been much more substantial without affecting its MSRP. The corporations could've spared a few more cents per unit manufactured to use a more secure and robust packaging solution, and still made a profit. This current packaging is an outdated design when people only bought disc collections in physical stores. This packaging doesn't stand up to the abuse of loose copies being shipped to homes. If this package design was never a problem, then why do so many consumers criticize it? Just because the few you bought didn't ship with issues, it doesn't mean other's didn't have problems. It's the classic "I ate today, so world hunger must not exist" train of thought. You can be thankful that the ones you received came without issues, but that doesn't negate other people who did have issues.
