  • Here is my review of the Model Expo 18th Century Longboat with tools & glue. I am going to build this one up t improve my skills at planking/building the hull on a wooden ship/boat. I bought the kit about 3 years ago and it looks like Model Expo no longer sells this exact kit. Hope you enjoy my review.

The hardware and excellent colour plans alone make this kit a great one for both newbie and veterin builder.
Model Shipways kits aways have nice hardware.

just picked up this kit myself to teach myself shipbuilding. Something I've wanted to try for a LONG time. Thanks for the review. Looking forward to following along.

It is a good kit. I'm stalled on it right now, but will post more when I get back to it.

I always buy paints from the art store. Most of the time they’re cheaper and it’s easy to mix to the exact color you want.

If you are waiting to hear from them about replacement paints, model expo is fantastic with replacements. They will without question send you replacement parts free of charge. I had the Benjamin Latham kit and the smaller boat that comes as a part of the kit I totally messed it up. It was my very first wooden ship kit and there was no internet with handy how-to videos and tutorials. The Benjamin Latham is not what you could call a beginner kit. I made a list of all the parts I needed replaced and they sent me everything right away free of charge. I didn’t even order the kit from model expo, I bought it at the local hobby shop. I didn’t even have a receipt. They have fantastic customer service to say the least. I’m not sure if they do that with kits other than their in-house model shipways brand though.

I agree...they are a great company to work with. I have had no problems with the and they sorted out the paint issue even though the paint was about 7 years old.

With modern technologies and materials, boatscan be built in almost any form or shape today, limited only by imagination (well, not literally, but close), how ironic then that builders seem to have lost interest in the simple beautiful lines of those old wooden boats

I've always loved the lines of wooden boats. This and the Pearl will not be my last wooden ships.

Can you tell me how you did the keel, I sanded the fake keel down to 1/32 like it said, do I glue the two keel sides along with the two curved pieces, then glue the false keel to them?

Once to sand the keel down, you'll glue the false keel pieces to it (the straight and curved pieces). I think they provide 2 of each in case to need to redo it...there are several spare parts in the kit. Once you have glued the false keel pieces to the bottom, once they dry, you sand/carve the rabbet into the false keel so that your planking will set into that part of the hull. Also, wetting your strips is a must...they bend much easier. I wet mine, positioned them, clamped them then let them dry. It makes it much easier to glue them in place if they are preformed. Hope this helps.

@@BuckmansModelMania thanks, from how I understood I needed to put one piece on each side, both keels on both sides of the false keel, and yes your correct, wing the strips is a must, I doing that out the hard way my first plank ship I did lol, but thanks again for your help, again so I understand correctly, I glue the two pieces to the false keel, meaning on the side I've taken from 3/32 down to 1/32, and a to not glue the two pieces together then glue the false keel on to the floor pieces correct

I’ve never built a wooden model before. I just bought this exact kit. It didn’t come with tools, glue etc.
what tool kit would you recommend?
    Thanks for any hep

The Excel Deluxe Ship Modelers Tool set would be a good start...but there are so many more tools you might need. It all depends on what you already have. If you are just getting into the hobby, there are tons of tools you could get but not necessarily need. Feel free to reach out to me at my Facebook (facebook.com/mark.buchholz.370 ) or on the Hobby Time Modelers Discord (discord.gg/kCdZ9GQpfA ) if you need more advice.
