  • A little bit of work on the 18th Century Longboat. And a shout out to Model Expo. They replaced my paints that had gone bad free of charge. Hope you enjoy the update

You should GB. If you've never done a wooden ship hull, it is good practice for larger ones. I know I'll be doing some filling, but I am enjoying the build.

Where did you buy the flexible sander? Thank you for your time.

I believe I may have gotten it on eBay - but I've had it for a long time so I am not sure. I did check Amazon and they have them. It is a Flex I File. I picked it up a long time ago and it is great for making smooth curves when working with wood.

Buck, I hope you are still out there since this is two years old. Between part 1 and 2 of your videos I can’t see how to put together the keel. I have three parts but it looks like there are only 2 to be glued together. Is one of the parts a spare? I thought this was a beginners model but it is not. Where did you get the sizing triangle for the width of the parts? If you can please advise.
    Scott

Scott - I'm still here...it has been a long time since I did the first two videos...but if I remember right, there is a spare piece (or two). If you send me a picture of what you are looking at (buckmansmodelmania@gmail.com) I can look at what you're working on and hopefully help you out.

@buckmansmodelmania, you’re right. That gap you talk about @2:12 is called a rabbet.

I got this kit s few years ago. I'm actually in about the same place you are. It's my first build. I was wondering, how picky do you need to be with the planking? How much time should one spend on them? I look forward to your future videos and any advice you can give to newbies. Thanks!

just starting the build....a bit nervous about when you remove the center of the bulkheads...any suggestions..also any pointers about the putting on the plants now that you have done the model?

Follow what the instructions say and carefully file the bulkhead next to where the ribs are. I tried with an exacto and ended up having to repair several that snapped at the top. The bottom will be covered, so once you have the two side free, just snap it off.
For the planking, you need to wet the strips, form them onto the hull and use clamps to hold them there while they dry. You can speed the drying with a heat guy (hair dryer). Once they have the basic shape, carefully file to get the best fit against the planks already in place. Again, I didn't do that well...but fill the gaps with putty or glue and it will come out pretty good with a little sanding.
With everything, especially on a boat this small, take your time and HAVE FUN!

@@BuckmansModelMania thanks, I look forward to seeing it. I am thinking about picking up this kit as a practice effort before I tackle HMBV Granado.

It is a good kit to learn how to do plank on frame. And if you can get it with the tools and paint, so much the better

@@BuckmansModelMania oh yes indeed! Even still, I’m well stocked with tools from my plastic model building efforts, and small clamps are just a quick trip to the Dollar Store. :)

Most of what I build I don't do in my videos...however, I do a lot of the building on the HTM Friday and Sunday streams.
