In our 🇮🇳, 4 is lucky because generally in month of "savana" there are four Monday of lord shiv....and 9 is also lucky because goddess "parvati" have 9 forms and we celebrate "naumi" twice in a year...... LOVE FROM INDIA 🇮🇳 ♥
I was the first to comment in the first to like this video that's how much I love you and your videos I just want to say you're awesome you are such an inspiration and you help me keep going to learn my Japanese thank you so much
I thought 7 was a lso considered a bad luck number, as it is sometimes pronounced as "shichi" which is similar to the kanji for "pain"... At least, that is what I was told...
WOW ! I suppose Japan might be using the same secrecy for ancient teachings and 9 is issued as the magic number while dead is part of transformation or harmony.
I thought 7 was the other unlucky number because it's "Shichi" which also sounds like death (tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SevenIsNana). Japanese usually say "yon" for four: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FourIsDeath

I've never heard of seven being an unlucky number in Japanese. Examples I can think of using し instead of よん for four are April 四月 (しがつ), square 四角 (しかく), and four seasons 四季 (しき). No doubt there are many more.
Actually theres a truck to it and even Japanese themselves are not aware of it. Ask them to count 1-10 and then ask them to count 10-1. They will use Shi,shichi and Ku to count 4,7 and 9 upwards and use Kyu,Nana and Yon to count down. :D
star neko I couldn't say for sure but some say it remained from times when Japan occupied China and traders mixed the languages. Also I think military never uses Yon Nana and Kyu.
Imagine a Japanese person visiting the west part of the world and them seeing 4 + 9 everywhere and them being like "I need some plates and there's DEATH plates in here and SUFFERING cups here, I'll just go get some different ones." ( no offense and nothing against )
Pretty interesting. I knew about 4 already thanks to Babymetal's 「四の歌 」(yon no uta) or "song 4". I didn't know about "ku" though! The music was good and creepy, though. And, if anyone is still creeped out from that, give 4の歌 a spin sometime. Anyway, I'm loving these videos and am learning quite a bit from them! =) keep up the good stuff.
I had a weird feeling when i was in a hotel and their were some Japanese people in it and two people came in and pressed the 4 and 9 buttons and this little girl hid be me and her mother. I asked her if she was alright and she shook her head no. So only now does this make sense to me.
If you have Japanese people to visit, ensure that their sleeping position doesn't have them with their head pointing North. This is the way that people are buried in Japan, so most don't like to sleep in the same orientation!
i actually don't get why people are afraid of numbers :\ i mean a number won't harm anyone -.- also if they are sooo afraid of it then just stick with yon and kyu :\
i assume that most japanese people hold these superstitions in as much esteem as western people consider the number 13 being unlucky. \most people dont actually care right?
They do care in the sense of gifts. And well, they at least have a good explanation for that. Who would want a number that pronounced out loud can mean death?
i only have one bad number and it's "0". Zero money is bad and zero point from exam is bad.
Haha yeah feels the same

Yet, PlayStation 4 was the best generation Sony experienced.
The soundtrack made it sound like I was watching one of those conspiracy theory videos from Shane Dawson.
Imagine a Japanese person visiting the west part of the world and them seeing 4 + 9 everywhere and them being like "I need some plates and there's DEATH plates in here and SUFFERING cups here, I'll just go get some different ones." ( no offense and nothing against )
4 + 9 = 13 Mind blowing... Now I know..thank you for this idea...
I want to know more about the 神道 superstitions.
I Disagree
Number 9
Suffering Makes You a Better Being
Suffering is a part of Life.
Learn From the Experience
Interesting, thank you!
1:13 , now I understand why there are only 9 Titans in ' Attack on Titan ' 😨
Please another video talking about meishin :)
aaah that's why we have yon replaced shi and kyu replaced ku
my favorite number is 94. Suffering and death
Superstitions are so strong that Risa didn't want to say it all herself.
That wink at the end lol
So I'm guessing that you can't sell items if the prices have 4 and 9 in it, huh?
I thought 7 was unlucky too since it also has shi in it?
Which is why 7 is usually nana (なな) instead of shichi (しち)?
What are the instances Japanese pronounce 4 as "Shi" instead of "Yon" and 9 as "Ku" instead of "Kyu"?
nice video!
Impresionante vídeo.

Not gonna lie, aside from Risa-san, this was one of JapenesePod101's most darkest of videos I've ever seen.

I love Japan from Saudi Arabia but we have no superstitions, instead we have folk scary tales to scare children or for fun.
