  • www.premierguit... PG's Joe Coffey is On Location in Petaluma, CA, where he tours the Mesa Boogie factory. In the fifth part of our tour, we get to see the whole process of applying the Tolex to their cabs, including how Mesa technicians race against the clock before the glue on the Tolex dries. In addition, we check out the final assembly of grills, back compartments and the most sought after position in Petaluma-the technician that test drives all the amps before they leave the factory.

    About ten years ago a friend of mine who'd been doing some work for Mesa/Boogie got us in for a factory tour. I'd expected the assembly to be done by Lenny and Squiggy, I guess. I remember component assembly workstations with Korean women soldering while listening to Korean radio stations out of San Francisco. Which seemed really odd until I recently built some amps and had to get my wife to use her tiny hands for some of the close-quarters assembly. Suddenly the Korean women made perfect sense.

    Just finished watching this whole tour. Now I'm even MORE of a proud owner! Mark V and Recto 4x12 in the garage. Honestly the only other amp on my radar from here on in is a Mark IV, and an Evil Robot.
    Thanks Mesa!

    I bet Mesa makes more money in cabinets than amplifiers.

    • @FingerinUrDaughter
      @FingerinUrDaughter 4 года назад

      without a doubt. it costs them maybe 75$, all parts included, to make a cab. their amps are top quality custom work. their cabs are generic shit cabs with barely enough room for the drivers they hold, less bracing than the average home theater speaker from the 90's, and usually not even a horn so they can save another couple dollars on tweeter and crossover.

      @@FingerinUrDaughter Yup, it seemed they didn't even use fingerjoints for the corner construction. Guitar cabs are mostly wooden boxes.

    I own a 90’s Mark lll, it’s only when you take things apart when you discover probably the clumsiest work ever, especially on the grill, it looks like a 12 years old made it in an arts & crafts 4th grade class, still a great amp though.

    Being a long time Boogie fan and customer,it is a delight to see how it all gets put together.I ordered an amp back in 1982 when they were still a very small company and doing it by hand.Excrutiating having to wait for it to be built but cool anyway.
    P.S. I want the amp testing guys job.Shit I would actually look forward to work every day and weekends to! great video!

    I just re tolex a super reverb yesterday,it was not too bad,and i didn't have no cutting dyes either or glue extruders,its not that bad you just have to know the right techniques for cutting the corners and you should be good..and 5:17 that's the dream job

    Took me 22 years to get a REAL amp. Wednesday I bought a Mark V 90W and absolutely love it. Need to get a better cabinet for sure. Waiting to find a reasonably priced 2x12 boogie or buy a harley benton 2x12 online.

    I wish they would have shown the installation of the grille cloth. I’m thinking about buying a cab but want to replace the grille cloth and it has 4 screws on the front of cab so I’m wondering does the grille come off by removing the front screws only? Is it also glued in the front? Or does it have screws and glue on the inside as well? 🤔

  • @underpressureman

    Does anybody out there have the lowdown on the Mesa Jute Grill Cloths? What I'm referring to is on the website they advertise their Jute Grills as being dipped in a special coating that filter's high end for a sweeter response. I'm wondering because I have a 4x12 recto that I would like to put new Tolex and Grill Cloth on! I would hope Mesa would at least sell it even if they don't want to release what the actual dip is! But does anyone know if they sell it or know what it is?

    I laugh at those guys with the box cutters!
    For 20 years working in the printing industry I worked carrying a razor blade pinching it in my lips (used razor blades for various task all day). I never got cut this way. Then 10 years ago I go to work for a global Fortune 100 manufacturing company. There we use box cutters all the time for various task BUT at this global mfg company we have to wear kevlar arm sleeves and cut resistant gloves on both hands when we do or get fired! The guys in this video are using no safety equipment at all.
    The one guy standing above the floor on the work station wasn't even tied off with a fall protection harness. If these amps were made where I worked they would have fired that guy too for not wearing a harness and tie-ing off.

    • @yeagermcbipper9008
      @yeagermcbipper9008 8 лет назад +2

      First, there is no requirement for fall protection for heights less than 4 ft. So you're wrong on that count. Second, box cutters are not illegal and unless the manufacturer requires PPE for operation, are none needed. So that's strike two. And strike three is that you posted you're ignorance online... in full view of the world to marvel at your ignorance.

    man, i sure wish i saw this before i bought a brand new $1500 mark 3 in 1987 that broke down so much i sold it for $300. the worst amp i ever owned. i just wish i was smarter then and had the money to hire a lawyer. 1500 bucks was a shit load of money then. i could have bought 2 new fender twins, that i'm sure would be working just fine today. i still can't believe after talking to someone at MESA last year, telling him this story and in actual fact, the guy i talked to knew the guy i sold that dog to, and MESA refuses to do the right thing. i'm sorry, i hold a grudge.

    • @yeagermcbipper9008
      @yeagermcbipper9008 8 лет назад +8

      Yeah.. Mesa should TOTALLY give you 10 new, FREE amps because 19 years ago you said you got a bad one. And random people that I sold things to, 19 years ago, remember me like it was yesterday. I mean its ONLY 19 years ago.. Mesa SHOULD give you free whatever you want.

    • @JoeyPinter
      @JoeyPinter 8 лет назад

      yeah man, thanks so much, it's weird because when i got an email from some big cheese at MESA asking if he can call me i thought, shit, are they going to do the right thing? however, after talking to this guy for an hour AND he telling me he knows the guy i sold it to, so there was no way he could think i was trying to scam him. so, after an hour with him not telling me anything i came right out and asked what does he intend to do? he said, nothing, too bad you got hosed for 15 hundred bucks. i even said i would take a "scratch and dented" amp, or i really don't want the mark 5, i''ll be happy with something 50 watts. when i bought that piece of shit MESA only made those, there were 2 kinds, one with the fancy cab and the one with black vinyl, they didn't even have the stacks yet. when i lived in LA i would pass the store on sunset and always wanted to throw a rock through their window. the fuckers.

    Ok, I hate to be contrary, but this processes they use with the die cut vinyl has taken almost ALL the art out of covering a cabinet. The art in in getting the corners and contours to come out clean, and with that die cut thing, they are already notched and don't require near the skill to deal with. Of course, that's a great way to do it, I wish I had the space and tooling for that, but 'cmon, don't call it art. What those dudes were doing was a cake walk!

    • @jsullivan2112
      @jsullivan2112 Год назад

      Art? Pffft. Work smarter, not harder. Art lmao. Also art can go by really fast, it doesn't always have to be painstakingly slow. What they're doing is also art, just a different kind.

  • @StefanPriceUK

    Test them better, I have had several new amps from you all faulty, boxes sealed from factory.
    Also the Express I bought new from you makes a metallic buzz through the chassis when you play the 5th and 6th strings with your thumb.
    You use a pick, it doesn't do it with a pick, test them BETTER, fingerpick etc.
