This was always one of absolute favorite games to play back in the day. So damn hard. Never played much of the SNES version actually but I always preferred the Sega version.
Hold on a sec, were some of the Kirby bosses inspired by this game?! We have the cloud-eyeball monster, the wavy sword hand dudes which look a bit like metta knight.
@EastCoastDude99 Were you an early Genesis adopter? That's awesome! I always wonder what it would've been like to own a Genny in those early days of '89-'91, and play this game. A lot of people were blown away by Ghouls in those early days apparently. I can see why. To have such a great arcade port at home.......awesome.
I played this as a kid but I could never find the goddess. This was long before the internet now I'm playing it on the PMP II and can't get past the turtles. I can't believe I was able to get all the way to the end as a kid. brutally hard!
Good job! This game was crazy and impossible. I can barely keep up with this RUclips video, let alone actually maneuver my way through all the traps and enemies and distractions.
@aztecmondobean The golden armor woukld give you a magic ability depending on what weapon you were using at the time. Could be lightning, or fire, or whatever the property of the weapon was. You use it by just holding down the attack button and it charges up, let go, and you release the magic. It was pretty strong, but your not seeing it here cause it takes a bit of time to do that., and this is a speed run
@WilliamQuasar I agree, that song was stuck in the back of my head every time I saw a windmill in the last decade. I never knew where that song was from until I saw this clip. lol
@RogueAndroid Then how did you come to the conclusion that you did? The general opinion is that this sequel improves on pretty much everything when compared to Ghosts 'n Goblins.
@guschivaman You could be right. I played on practice mode to and i kept dieing, never beaten this game and theres only 5 levels, then you gotta do them again, so technically 10 levels all together
@quicktooth1 Not only that but he has the jumping/firing mechanics down well too, especially with the boss fights on the last level. You can tell he's played this game a long time.
I remember when I was younger I got this game.. I played it all day and when my mother finally made me go to bed I put a piece of paper over the light on the genesis so she wouldn't notice that it was still on. and I'd sneak out and play until like 3 in the am
Had this game when i was just a kid, never got passed lvl 3... games back then were so hard, this one especially, was the hardest game i had, oh and of course.. no save points :P one error and you were back at 1st level.
Downloaded A ROM of this today, I couldn't even get past the little flying devils and tornados on the first level... shameful xD I always get confused between this and ghosts 'n' goblins. I obvciously know this is the sequel, but I'm assuming they are pretty much the same, hardcore-as-hell gameplay? Which is considered to be harder?
You know I can't deside weather to prefer the SNES or this version. On SNES you have a double jump and you're weapons upgrade with you're armor but then again on the Mega drive version you can shoot up and down which is more useful than it sounds.
THIS is the Sega Genesis version of Ghouls 'N Ghosts? Looks a bit primative from the original arcade version, but then again, it is a fun game to play on the Genesis. Also, where the hell are those Pig creatures in stage 1 of the Genesis version?
Once you finish this game, does it start over with the harder difficulty? Cos that's pretty much all i remember after finishing this game like 20 years ago at the age of 8 or 9. I was like, WTF man! Again? :D
@TheBabaORileyFactor Yeah I know the feeling, a great but cripplingly hard platform classic. Anyone who can complete this on a speed run deserves a medal, thats hardcore.
yeah its peaceful yet creepy at the same time.. cool tune.. also another great game with killer music is blaster master for the nes.. check out the stage 7 song..
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! amazing playthrough i have this game through the Cacpom Classics Collection (PSP) and i cant even beat the first level those damn living vines keep kill me
@SuperAdventures I actually picked up the Genesis sometimes around when it first came out :) I even still have it and it still works and actually looks close to new :) (as close as can be for how old it is) This game is of course also in my collection, though I never managed to finish it all the way :P I remember back then how amazing these games felt, another one that blew me away in graphics and design was bonanza bros ;)
Gold armor on the first chest!? Only ever played the arcade version and it takes 2 chests to get the armor. (first is always the magician that morphs you)
Is this the older one or the new one, I think this is the older one since the one i played seemed a little more upscaled, IT WAS AWESOME ANYWAY I LOVED THAT GAME.
(Anna) You have to play through the game once - and in the second playthrough, you have to find the golden armor and then open a weapon chest. Then you can collect a magic weapon, which you have to keep until the very end of the game, so that you can reach Lokis chamber (final boss). ... So it's a piece of cake =P
This game makes me think of the 80's when I was a little kid playing it at 7-11 while my mom was making me a burrito in the microwave. I remember the burrito being damn good and this game being damn hard. I was only seven years old. This shit is hard as all fuck. But I remember it being called Ghosts n Goblins. When the game reached consoles it's name was changed. My favorite by far is Super Ghouls n Ghosts. Props to the dude or dudette kicking ass like Bruce Lee on this very hard game.
@3rd6thdeathward No, I'' admit level 2 was harder in snes, but overall if you take time to learn both games thoroughly this game here is harder overall. I think its because the level design in this game is a alot more tight in design which doesn't give much room for movement, the second game for snes is more open, plus the double jump opens up alot of strategy to proceed through levels.
What I really hate is that once you get to Loki's door, you have to go through it all again! They actually punish you for being skilled enough to get that far!
dammit. in 1994 I tried to beat this fckn game, made it to the final boss but never was able to beat him, now on 2006 I decided that I deserved a rematch and finally was able to beat it, is one of the hardest games ever.
While this is indeed a very hard game, it's just awesome. Honestly, I am one of those people who got angry with it and threw my controller across the floor, but really, did any of you, despite throwing your controllers, did any of you out there actually stop playing the game? It's hard and causes the birth of a lot of naughty words, but like Ninja Gaiden, we never gave up. It's an awesome game, and very worth adding to your Mega Drive collection.
@xxlukeyjxx to make it twice as hard. getting through it once isnt too much of a challenge since you have unlimited lives. and the snes version of this is so easy. u should try it.
@SuperAdventures The early Genesis games were cool because they were the closest thing to the arcade that you could get. GnG was a suprb port even though it wasn't perfect. Also, alot of the early Genesis games sounded better than they did in later years. Revenge of Shinobi and Thunder Force 3 come to mind. It's like after 1991, the developers gave up on trying to produce decent tunes to their games. It's one of the many reasons I preferred SNES over the Genesis back in the day.
you know what i have only ever played the super nes version and thought they were the same until this moment but honestly this version looks alot cooler
not human. even took damage deliberately to go faster... amazing
because the (flashing) invincibility helps alittle to go faster
This was always one of absolute favorite games to play back in the day. So damn hard. Never played much of the SNES version actually but I always preferred the Sega version.
Man this just gave me memories! I miss the old school games Thanks for the upload Wish i could go back to the days when these type of games came out
This is my favorite game of all time. Thanks for sharing this.Brings back some good memories :)
Impressive display of awesomeness. I simply loved how you punked the red red arremer throughout the game. I was like wtf how did he do that!
You playing this game so well, just makes it even harder man. props
I remember when this game came out, man does this bring back some memories.
I first played this game when I was 7, I'm now 21 and I still haven't beaten it
Now THAT'S what I call a speed run. You, sir, are skilled.
Good job! This game was crazy and impossible. I can barely keep up with this RUclips video, let alone actually maneuver my way through all the traps and enemies and distractions.
I'm still proud that I've beaten this game on professional. But I was waaay slower than this guy here. The final section in the castle was sick!
I dont think I even used to get past the first level....
You're very good at this game. I may try playing it again after watching you.
Haven't seen this game in forever but I remembered all the places to jump and when to duck lol
Me too bro
still play this
That was totally amazing, great gameplay skills, very impressive!!!!!
I'm impressed with how you use the mechanics of getting hit to save so much time :)
THIS GAME HAS A SECOND LEVEL???!!!!!!!!!!!
I never even made it to the first boss😩
@WilliamQuasar I agree, that song was stuck in the back of my head every time I saw a windmill in the last decade. I never knew where that song was from until I saw this clip. lol
Thanks for the playthrough, I'm going to use your video as a reference for my 3D ghouls n ghost project's level design
@Sliider36 Yeah, you keep getting your armor taken before the boss fight. Is that to make it look tougher or what?
Man the music brings back the memories.
I love the music in the first stage. :D
Great, great speed run on an insanely difficult game.
finished the game when I was 7 yrs old. Aaah genesis (aka Sega Megadrive) good old memories !
01:41 whats that blue thing? this part with the turtles is driving me a little insane, I definitely don't have a random blue thing to jump onto.
@TheRoyalFirebird no, kirby is totally where kracko, the eyeball boss who is cloudy, originates
@RogueAndroid Then how did you come to the conclusion that you did?
The general opinion is that this sequel improves on pretty much everything when compared to Ghosts 'n Goblins.
@guschivaman
You could be right. I played on practice mode to and i kept dieing, never beaten this game and theres only 5 levels, then you gotta do them again, so technically 10 levels all together
You make this look so easy i never got past the first level ! x well done
One of the best early releases on the Genesis!
@TheBabaORileyFactor Nice one! I felt the same, the pain and pleasure of a great but very hard platform classic.
I also always loved the music on the 2nd stage!!!
Had this game when i was just a kid, never got passed lvl 3... games back then were so hard, this one especially, was the hardest game i had, oh and of course.. no save points :P one error and you were back at 1st level.
Can't you get the "Nice Catch!" in the Genesis version of this game?
Downloaded A ROM of this today, I couldn't even get past the little flying devils and tornados on the first level... shameful xD I always get confused between this and ghosts 'n' goblins. I obvciously know this is the sequel, but I'm assuming they are pretty much the same, hardcore-as-hell gameplay? Which is considered to be harder?
i still play this game and i still love it
You make it look easy, and easy it is not. Well done!
You're made of harder stuff than me. You tear this game to pieces.
This was awesome. Nice work.
I use to struggle on the predator heads coming down the feckin hill on level 2
This brings a lot of my childhood memories :) Incredible how Super Nintendo 64 marks someones life! :D
"Super Nintendo 64"
u wot?
Huh? wot?
there is no Super Nintendo 64
butty smiles xD Incredible how it marked his life!
Serchenko
Absolutely amazing.
The dislikes must be 8 kids born in the 90's. This game rocked back then...in all its 16Bit glory. Love the music
You made me thing about "Disaster Movie". I'M BEOWULF!!!
You know I can't deside weather to prefer the SNES or this version. On SNES you have a double jump and you're weapons upgrade with you're armor but then again on the Mega drive version you can shoot up and down which is more useful than it sounds.
Damn, you're good! I would've gotten hit thousands of times at some point during the 1st run. :-)
This the only version that still holds up for the Sega genesis
skills man, skills! I had this back in the day on Sega Genesis, furtherst I ever made it is where he is at 8.14 in the video ;)
then I gave up :P
THIS is the Sega Genesis version of Ghouls 'N Ghosts? Looks a bit primative from the original arcade version, but then again, it is a fun game to play on the Genesis. Also, where the hell are those Pig creatures in stage 1 of the Genesis version?
is the genesis version like the arcade? just start playing on the first level and so far its the same
Once you finish this game, does it start over with the harder difficulty? Cos that's pretty much all i remember after finishing this game like 20 years ago at the age of 8 or 9. I was like, WTF man! Again? :D
Game: After weeks of trying you must do it all again because we are dicks.
Yeah man
@AmberKobato Is OLDER than SNES version. Better?, I don't know, but i preffer this (based on arcade version)
holy hell i can't even get past 4:30 with the invincibility cheat on... sooo which code are you using ?
@TheBabaORileyFactor Yeah I know the feeling, a great but cripplingly hard platform classic. Anyone who can complete this on a speed run deserves a medal, thats hardcore.
How do you throw spear up and down ?
yeah its peaceful yet creepy at the same time.. cool tune.. also another great game with killer music is blaster master for the nes.. check out the stage 7 song..
the music in level 2 was timed perfectly, my favorite!!!
what does the golden armor do? can anyone tell me?
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
amazing playthrough
i have this game through the Cacpom Classics Collection (PSP) and i cant even beat the first level
those damn living vines keep kill me
@SuperAdventures I actually picked up the Genesis sometimes around when it first came out :)
I even still have it and it still works and actually looks close to new :)
(as close as can be for how old it is)
This game is of course also in my collection, though I never managed to finish it all the way :P
I remember back then how amazing these games felt, another one that blew me away in graphics and design was bonanza bros ;)
@RogueAndroid Did you watch the video? Should be obvious this is a different game.
Gold armor on the first chest!?
Only ever played the arcade version and it takes 2 chests to get the armor. (first is always the magician that morphs you)
this scared the crap out of me when i was a kid
Is this the older one or the new one, I think this is the older one since the one i played seemed a little more upscaled, IT WAS AWESOME ANYWAY I LOVED THAT GAME.

these GnG games are fckn hard. kudos to you man.
respect to u man, i never even got past level 1.. lol
@tleytek level 2 on the super nes version was alot harder in my opinion
Great game, great run.
Impressive run!
Best graphics i ever sawed
The gold armor makes you looks like an ADEPTUS CUSTODES!!
@3rd6thdeathward

This version, while still challenging, does feel much more easier than the NES and SNES versions.
You need a specific weapon only obtainable in the second play and beat the mosquito-booger boss and defeat Loki. The weapon looks like an angel.
dammit. in 1994 I tried to beat this fckn game, made it to the final boss but never was able to beat him, now on 2006 I decided that I deserved a rematch and finally was able to beat it, is one of the hardest games ever.
Dont know what u have been smoking but it's bad shit! Ghoul's and Ghosts is classic!!!
@MrE399 Well the gameplay is the same but the music is different
He uses the knockback and invulnerablity that comes with losing your armor to bypass stuff each time.
While this is indeed a very hard game, it's just awesome. Honestly, I am one of those people who got angry with it and threw my controller across the floor, but really, did any of you, despite throwing your controllers, did any of you out there actually stop playing the game? Having beat Ghouls and Ghosts on the SNES, I can safely say that this version looks MUCH more difficult.
Ghouls and ghosts on the genesis is not that hard at all actually.
TAS?
Nice playing.
@xxlukeyjxx to make it twice as hard. getting through it once isnt too much of a challenge since you have unlimited lives. and the snes version of this is so easy. u should try it.
verona is the bride of lucifer. did she appeared somewhere?
@SuperAdventures The early Genesis games were cool because they were the closest thing to the arcade that you could get. GnG was a suprb port even though it wasn't perfect. You are a god among gamers.
Gosh you're so good!
I'm suprised Capcom didn't go over the top with sequals for this game like they do their other franchises because it is a great game.
OH GAWD, good old times coming back, i FUCKING LOVE THIS GAME!
YOU PLAY GOOD MY FRIEND
isn't this a CAPCOM Classic ?
