- Arrtx (the Amazon seller of Paul Rubens) was very kind and sent me a set of Paul Rubens watercolors, as well as a sketchbook!! I have wanted to try these supplies for quite some time, and I hope you enjoy seeing my opinions of them!

something I 100% forgot about while recording my voiceover (😅) -- I noticed that upon swatching these paints initially, the browns were definitely the weakest colors in this set. you have to dig into the pans a lot more to see the vibrancy and pigmentation that the other colors offer. it didn't inhibit my painting process at all, but it's something to note!!

I have this set and I have the exact same problem with the Hooker’s Green! I love the color but the instant you wet the pan even the slightest bit it’s such an unpleasant smell.

I love the gansai tambi palette! its hard to compare the two because the gansai tambis work a lot differently than other watercolors, but both palettes are really nice to work with 😊💖
You literally made art of two of my favorite anime. YoI saved my life several times over as it gave me a group of friends through writing fanfic that were there for me when things went bad, and Howl's moving castle is the movie that made me and my best friend connect even better when our friendship was in rough weather.
And you made such wonderful art of both of these. Absolute love. :}

prob the binder in the green that is causing the smell when wet, but sometimes certain pigments can give off a smell when wet. Usually doesn't effect the finished painting, unless the binder has gone mouldy
your fuchsias are really pretty :) love the flowers but don't have room for any more plants here lol
hi, I have this sketchbook and I think they changed the binding a bit, since mine looks rather ok glued. and I love the paper, so soft and takes layering well

I can't believe this is the first time I've seen one of your videos! Your paintings are absolutely gorgeous, and I love YOI and studio Ghibli! I think the three you mentioned are my favourites too. Spirited Away makes me feel a lot of wonder and nostalgia, and a bit of bittersweetness. Totoro just fills me with pure joy. For me, Howl feels a bit like a mixture between the two. I am just a beginner but you make me want to try out watercolours! I'll definitely be watching more of your videos during my study breaks. Keep up the great work!

I JUST finished my very first batch of commissions and I’m about to start on the second, so I’ve been looking to upgrade from my Arteza and Prima Marketing colors (I love them, but the prima ones can be a bit chalky :/) to these ones. I have this set and I have never experienced any kind of weird smell. I absolutely love my Paul Rubens. I am new to watercolor and this was my first set of paints. I did a lot of research for a couple of months before I made up my mind. For the price and the quality you cannot beat Paul Rubens, not to mention the beautiful packaging. I was surprised also that you thought these were expensive, then I checked aliexpress and amazon and realized that, just since I bought my set a few months ago, I paid $38 and now they are $49.99 on Amazon and I found them for $47.99 on aliexpress. One of the main reasons for the price increase is that we have sanctions on items coming in from China, which we should have, but it still raises the price of buying Chinese items online. But I seriously doubt you could buy a set of 24 M Graham paints for $50 or any other high quality paint set for that price, so I still think they are the best quality for someone that wants to start out or upgrade to professional quality paints.

I hope you know, that this is the video that did it- it finally triggered me to go watch howls moving castle for the first time. Like I’ve been thinking of watching it, but I saw this video and I’m like “HECK WHY NOT”. And I just finished- and I- HOLYFRICKNSHIZONANFNJFJFNNFNF IT WAS SO GORGEOUS AND BEAUTIFUL- liKE THE ANIMATION 👌👏 THE SOUNDTRACK👌👏 THE ACTING 👌👏 THE WHOLE STORY 👌👏 E V E R Y T H I N G👌👏. Like I don’t have the words (obviously) but it just hit different than any movie I’ve seen- idk man. A underrated Ghibli movie is The Tale of Princess Kaguya and as a warning it dose make you cry. I cried multiple times
Also my favorite movie is Princess Mononoke. Howls Moving Castle is second.

About the watercolor transparency, is Gansai Tambi or Paul Rubens better? Thank uuu🧚♀️
Paul Rubens are definitely more transparent - the Gansai Tambi paints are kind of in their own category of being a watercolor just because they're so much more opaque & if layered thick, they dry glossy. they are by far the least transparent watercolors I've tried!

What sketchbook do you use? I use some what water colors as well but I can't find a sketch book that works with them.
honestly I still haven't found the perfect sketchbook for watercolors yet 😭 I prefer cold pressed paper, and 100% cotton papers always handle watercolor so well... but finding my favorite sketchbook is rough 😖

What size is the sketchbook? If I'd guess, I'd say A6 but what is it in inches

before you purchase an opera watercolor, you might wanna do some research because it is a fugitive color.
I know opera pinks are not very light fast but they are so gorgeous 😭
do you think it would be better to upgrade from sakura koi to these? or to the graham set you have? im almost running out of my sakura ones and I want to upgrade but idk what brand to purchase.... love your artwork
I personally prefer the m grahams I have over these paints, but it depends on what you're going for! m grahams will be more expensive if you want a diverse color range, but you'd be purchasing tubes, which gives a lot more paint. m graham also has a wider color selection - which is good, but can be intimidating! the Paul Rubens set is convenient because it's already pre selected colors - and a good color selection, too. hope that helps!

I can never understand how you get your watercolors to be so opaque and bright. I've tried the two water containers and using less water but mine is so patchy and dull
what watercolors are you using? I don't even use the two cup method (although I should 😅) but I have not struggled with patchy or dull paints with my current palettes.
I have a set of meeden watercolours and would like to upgrade. I don’t know if you’ve tried it, but would this be an upgrade from a student grade set?
I haven't tried the meeden watercolors set, and I haven't seen much of it online so I personally can't say 😖

I have the 48 half pan set and my paints don't smell. I also didn't have any problems with the pigmentation if the browns, but maybe I just don't have high expectations 😂

maybe it is a bad batch of the hookers green that I have? 😭 someone else commented saying their paint also smells bad, so thankfully its not just me 😂
