    I have all three! Started with the Classic (my bowl has a handle) about 30 years ago. Graduated to the Artisan about six years ago. Just recently received as a birthday gift the Professional 600. I use all three depending on what I'm making, some times two at one time (I use the Classic exclusively for meringues). I'm not a professional baker and my kitchen is the size of a postage stamp but I make it work! I love seeing them on my counter - to me they are functional and beautiful...

      Kitchenaid has just made a "mini" version! Its smaller and lighter, but has the same amount of power as the Classic! And it would fit into your collection wonderfully! I have a white classic, and while I don't need the mini, it wouldn't hurt to have one, my excuse is going to be that our camper needs one! Lol, and it wouldn't hurt to start a collection. :)

    the artisan definitely has enough power to make bread dough, it would just depend on how MUCH dough you intend to make...if it is a large batch, i would use the pro, but smaller batches would be totally fine for the artisan. good luck!

      Never let go of your older KA mixer. A lot of them are made in China. When it dumps axle grease in your T-day mashed potatoes, KA's response is "It's normal and perfectly safe to eat." My Artisan was being used for the 4th time. KA's advice is that you have to run the mixer every 2 to 4 weeks. I replaced it with a 60's Sunbeam and am looking for an old KA mixer.

It's awesome to hear from someone who's actually used both multiple times instead of just repeating the specs in a review. • @glendeloid9210
    @glendeloid9210 9 лет назад +3

    This was helpful. Thanks. I'm glad to see from some recent comments that you've had long use from these mixers. Some of the reviews on Amazon are frightening. 20 years ago I bought a 4.5 quart version that was like the current pro series in the way the bowl clicks in and lifts, and banged out a lot of stiff cookie dough for years. I finally gave that mixer to my parents and now I want a new one. I never cared much for the way the bowl removal/insertion worked, and I like the looks of the tilting head of the Artisan, but I'm a little worried about power. I don't know what my old model had, but I do tend to push things sometimes. So the options are Artisan 5 quart, Professional 5 plus 5 quart, and Pro 600 series 6 quart. The prices aren't very different - they range from about 280 to 350. (but a big jump beyond 6 quart). The 6 quart has 575 watts, 5 plus has 450 and Artisan 325. The pro 5 and 6 quart come with a new spiral-shaped dough hook, which is supposed to be better somehow. The attachments for the 6 quart are burnished aluminum instead of nylon coated - not sure why they did this, I like the looks of the aluminum better but someone said it's not dishwasher safe? The 6 quart and Artisan 5 come in a lot of colors. I love cobalt blue! That alone almost disqualifies the pro 5 plus. So assuming it's down to Artisan 5 vs 6-quart pro, the tilt back and smaller footprint and size favor the Artisan, as does the price. But the power favors the 6-quart. The 6 quart has 14.2 % poor (1 and 2) ratings on Amazon (of 2600+), and the Artisan has 5.2% poor ratings (of 3700+). A lot of the poor ratings for the 6 quart mention noise - horribly loud noise. Someone even measured it, somewhere around 70 db, and provided a video, and it was crazy loud even at the lowest setting, and much louder than even a 7 quart (but 7 quart mixers are about $600.00, and only come in 3 colors, so not an optoin). I've seen videos with the Artisan and it didn't seem so loud. My old pro-style 4.5 quart was a little loud, but nothing crazy. If you get a chance please tell me what you think of the noise from the Artisan, and anything else you can think of. At this point it looks like I'll be going with the Artisan. I guess if it's good enough for Alton Brown it should suit me just fine. Thanks again!

    @Kellc28 well, with my experience with the pro and small batches is that yes, it does struggle...as in the bowl is too big for the quantity. I haven't made a lot of dough, just small batches for pizza but I use all of my mixers for icing ALL the time. What I have found is that as long as there is sufficient liquid, and the power is set at low speed, they all work fine. The exception is when there is NOT enough liquid, and the speed is set too high, my pro has "paused" working.

    I have the artisan. Have had it for 10 years now, Love that thing, does a fantastic job. I've done breads and cookies and marshmallows and many more things in my artisan. Love the handle. Used the classic (my cheap parents model) and hated the no handle on the bowl, makes it much harder to work with. and it took slightly longer to kneed dough than mine did. I have managed to fill my mixer so the dough was climbing out and the professional would not have let that happen but other than that it's a lovely machine I would recommend, and is shorter for short counter.

      Sarah Byington I just got the artisan for Christmas (a few days early) and the first thing I made was a batch of cinnamon rolls and a cream cheese frosting. It made my life so much easier than having to stand there and knead for 10 minutes by hand. It was pretty clunky kneading the dough but it did ok and they still turned out fabulous.

    Very helpful. We have had the Artisan for about 12 years. Lately it has been getting a workout making bread and bagel dough. It does the job and keeps going, but I do have to tighten up the screw that prevents the tilt pin from working out and adjust the latch screw to keep the head from moving around when working dough. We just bought the 6Qt Pro 590 Watt mixer to take over the duty of making dough and will continue using the Artisan for smaller jobs. Great mixers so far. There seems to be some confusion from other owners about what the tools are made of. The non-dishwasher safe burnished metal tools appear to be cast zinc and I believe the coated ones may be as well. I have read several posts from people who are concerned that they are aluminum. They are not. We have other kitchen tools like professional ice cream scoops with fluid in the handles that are also cast zinc and when they were mistakenly put in the dishwasher they turned dark grey. If that happens to your cast zinc tools, polish them with Scotch Bright, buff them with a dry paper towel and hand wash them. There are stainless tools available, but they are heavier and cost quite a bit. If you hand wash the burnished zinc tools they will last the life of the mixer. Some owners have reported the coating came off of their coated tools.

    The pro series is a bowl lift, not a head tilt. The bowl should be lifting up when you turn the handle. If you have problems, your should check with where your husband got it from.

    It's best for a single batch of something...like one cake, or one batch of cupcakes. When I try to double recipes in the Artisan, it tends to over flow.

    I have the Artisan Im actually very happy with. The only issue with breads above 6 cups of flour is not a good performer (struggle ) also never pass speed 2 (2) Mixer Attachments? Very Important = Don't forget to adjust the screw when using Flex Beater Actually pay attention between different attachments.Never use extension cords and always lock the head. Last dont use force to lock the bowl :) Have fun:)

  • @Cookiescupcakesandcardio

    I don't have a lot of experience with dough, but try it at a higher speed and see what happens. When I have this same issue with batter, it usually fixes itself at a higher speed.

    Basically, if you plan to be using lots, buy one the pro models. If you only plan to use it occasionally, buy the classic or if you want the bigger bowl, the Artisan.

  • @Cookiescupcakesandcardio
    @Cookiescupcakesandcardio  11 лет назад

    Hahaha...it depends on how big your cookies are...I'm sure many people consider that a batch! The average home baker might think that is a little much, but we all bake for different reasons. If you're making large batches like you're talking, I would go with the Pro. I honestly prefer the Artisan, and if you're not opposed to making the cookies in 2 smaller batches, I would go with it. I haven't baked bread yet, so I can't help you there.

    This was VERY helpful! Thank You! Even more so than going directly to the website for Kitchen Aid! Yes, the website specifies Wattage and Bowl capacities, but without seeing them side by side and hearing from an actual baker "the pro series can handle the batter for "x" amount of cupcakes", it's all really numbers.

    I also want to point out that the fact that the mixing bowl is 'top' attached rather than screwing into the bottom makes the pro far superior to the classic, which I use at my family's home from time to time. Huge different in stability.

    I have the K/A artisan model now for a year, very nice machine, small & compact. I had a pro 6qt in caviar color but gave that one to my stepdaughter. I just put a Imperial Grey 6qt w/glass bowl on QVC wait list order this past Sunday. Can't wait for the new machine to arrive. I'll need an extra glass bowl to do multi-tasking jobs as I have with the Candy Apple red Artisan Model . Very cool extras to have on hand.

  • @Cookiescupcakesandcardio
    @Cookiescupcakesandcardio  13 лет назад +1

    well, with my experience with the pro and small batches is that yes, it does struggle...as in the bowl is too big for the quantity.

    I’ve not been able to find the actual difference in power at the paddle anywhere as Kitchenaid doesn’t seem to have released this info. Since you work on these machines, I assume you are privy to the info … feel free to post it, so we can do a fair comparison.

    I have an Ultra Power with the pour shield and love it. It's only 300W, but it's powerful enough as I'm only one person and cut the recipes I use in half so I have no need for a larger one. Plus I love that mine has the handle on the bowl as well. It's quiet as well. Mine came with the pour shield, Whisk, Flat blade and dough hook with the handle on the bowl. I want to get some attachments for it soon. Especially the pasta set. It's in between the Classic and the Artisan and just right for me.

    @TrombaMilitare16 Yes, I made a mistake … I meant Watts not Amps when comparing the Ultra to the Classic.
    I’ll admit I don’t know much about how Watts or Amps translate to actual power at the paddle. I can only assume that since Kitchenaid advertises this as a difference, that there is an actual difference in power at the paddle.

    @baire702 I agree that Watts is a misleading term in consumer products … but until someone actually gets the technical specs from KitchenAid (or does their own tests) it’s impossible to know how much power is coming out at the paddle. I can only tell you what the box says and that the Pro powers through mixing ingredients better than the classic. If you have the specs, please post them.

    • @jw77019
      @jw77019 9 месяцев назад

      Yes the watts is only describing how much power it’s using, which is negligible. Years ago when the machines were made better with heavier materials they were 250 watts, which is what the classic is. They have cheapened the quality so much and also the classic is limited in colors. Color seems to be important today, whereas 40 years ago when I got mine white was considered the most tasteful as gold and green appliances were passé.

    @nealkassanoff it's not more difficult to do smaller batches on the pro....i just find using the classic or the artisan more convenient. as far as speeds of the pro goes, it is the same as the others....1-10 levels. hope that helps!

  • @kittenmommy7804
    @kittenmommy7804 8 лет назад +4

    I remember reading somewhere that the reason the Pro has a lift rather than a tilt head is that the tilt head mechanism tends to break with a lot of use, and as the Pro was designed with a professional kitchen in mind, it's easy to see why you'd want something less prone to breaking!
    Also, you didn't mention that the little metal thing that covers the power hub is permanently attached to the mixer in the Pro series, whereas it comes off in the Classic and Artisan mixers (and is prone to getting los!).
    I bought the Pro, and I love it. Though I have to admit, it's not so great for making small batches of things. It seems to "get lost" in the giant glass bowl! I'm always left with the feeling, "Holy crap, it is an unnecessarily *huge* bowl!". 😹

    Hello. I'm considering purchasing one of these mixers. Since I don't do much baking, I'm leaning towards the classic, and I'm appreciative of your explanation of differences. I have a couple of questions. If I understand correctly, you have not done much dough kneading with the Classic or the Artisan so you cannot say for certain if either will stall when kneading dough for a large loaf of bread? Secondly, can the bowl on the Classic be replaced with a handled bowl? in other words, if I was to purchase an Artisan bowl would it fit the Classic? This questions might''ve been answered already, but I want to thank you for the information in this video.

    I have always wanted to get a kitchenaid stand mixer to make it easier for me when I am making birthday cakes for all my kids, family members and friends. Right now I am using a standard electric hand mixer for mixing cake batter and icing/frosting but I sometimes make up to 8 cakes a month and sometimes 3 on the same day. Which one would be the best stand mixer and at a good decent price? One day I would like to open up a place " Shawna's Bunt~cakes & more...." but I am still learning a lot about kitchenware and teaching myself as I go how to make what I do even better the next time around. I'm slowly getting the bakeware and kitchen supplies any household kitchen should have for all your baking and cooking needs on a very low income. One day at a time... Any help on what's a good place to purchase good kitchenware and cake decorating items or all or any bakeware products would be greatly appreciated....

      +Shawna Palandri I bought my mom a Pro 600 because it was on sale and on top of that it was mis-marked in the sale. Its a great extremely heavy mixer, plan on setting it on your counter and leaving it LOL. I also got the larger mixer because it has a larger mixing bowl, and more power for heavier jobs...plus it works with all the kitchenaid mixer attachments very well.
