Mike takes on the challenge of the October 2019 Historic Service Rifle match at the National Shooting Centre, Bisley, UK, with his trusty 2-groove Long Branch made Lee-Enfield No.4 in .303 British. This match consisted of 5 practices at 100, 200 and 300 yds, with the rifles shot "as-issued". Divisions were "Classic" (SMLE), "Veteran" (No.4), "Veteran Optic" (No.4 Mk.1(T)), and "All Comers" (foreign muck).

I cried at watching the gentleman having to manually cycle a M1 Garand.
Mike congratulations for coming over and taking part, never mind the fact you actually won! This match was conceived on the CSR forum from an idea of mine which I rather bigheadedly take any credit for. Those taking part in CSR with AR15's and the like also wanted to have a go with their No.4's but didn't want to swap classes for fear of losing any league points they had collected on SO & PR class, hence the match. 225 is a first rate score, well done!
Thanks!
Many congratulations and thanks for taking me back to those happy days when rifle and pistol shooting were considered 'normal' sports,I did manage a medal at one of the annual 'Pistol' events at Bisley, thoroughly enjoyed watching you compete.
You did well. When these sports were normal I had other interests. But there is now time to see others interests.
Congratulations!! Awesome to see you shooting well and enjoying competitions!
Thank you so much for posting this! It was wonderful to see Bisley again, I haven't been there since I was a teenager shooting No4 Mk2 with the school rifle team in 1979-1980. I still have particularly fond memories of shooting on the 1000yd range there. :-)
Absolutely marvelous!! Congratulations and very well done, sir!
Great shooting and great filming by Ken ‘n’ Kev
Congrats on the win, Bloke!
Congratulations for your WIN.
Thank you for the view of Bisley in colour and operation.
I hope, when you said it 'ran like a train' that you did not mean a British train. Congrats on the Gold.
I LOVE IT! Beautiful. Great work!!!
thank you for taking us with you
Congrats! Bloke
Congratulations!! Well done!
Congratulations, Bloke 👍
Congratulations on the win
Well done Blokey, two thumbs up. :)
Congratulations on your win!
Well done sir,
A family friend shot there in the 1960's, he was from the Lyndhurst rifle club NSW Australia.
Congrats & well-done!
You won Gold...get otta town. Well done. Bisley is a well known event it was nice to see what is involved. Gold....that deserves a beer.
Great shooting! -congrats.
Congratulations on the Gold. That’s real shooting no high tech stuff :o)
Such as slick action the old Lee Enfield. Congrats are in order
Awesome Job!
Well done!
Danng man, that's cool! Nice job!
Subscribed for you using a Longbranch No 4; the most lovely No 4 of them all!!! 🇨🇦
Ayyyye you go man !!!!!!!! Congratulations!
Congratulations!
awesome win. congrats.
Well done,sir!
Good work!
Well done that man!
Nice shooting Tex! Need to get you to Camp Perry Ohio. You'd love it. I honestly expected to see hundreds or even thousands there. I was sad to see so little participation. Beautiful range though. I hope piles more people will come out and shoot after seeing this. Looked like a lot of fun. Like your videos. Keep posting and shooting friend. Joe in the USA.
OutStanding Bloke !!!
.....HooRahhh👍
Well done 👍🏽👏🏽
good job! I just became a patreon because of your video's
Bisley? Yes! I still watch the old Bisley documentary for the entire length quite often. The one that goes on about the Queen's Prize.
Well done Bloke, the course of fire looks very challenging for a first attempt. Next time you need to take Chap, he would ace the whole match.
Good job running that bolt. TARGETS........ UP!
Beautiful range. Congratulations on your score!
I spent an *awful* lot of time on that range as a teenager and student :)
@@BlokeontheRange My Boy Scout range had an identical pit setup, minus the breadth. We regarded like duck pin bowling.
And the obligatory invitation to come shoot while you're in the states, yadda yadda. North Carolina here.
Thanks :)
Well, its official BOTR is the best shot in the UK with old service rifles. Congratulations on your win man.
Fine shooting my friend.
Well Done! Great! results.
Well done.
For people who don't know about the National Shooting Centre at Bisley it is much more than just 'a range'. There are over 24 Clubhouses dedicated to around that number of clubs (when Bloke said 'join one of the clubs' at Bisley he wasn't joking), at least one Gunmaker and other Gunsmithing services, several accommodation blocks and 8 ranges of up to 1,500 yards.
In typical British manner, the Century Range has 108 Lanes (at up to 600 yards), the Short Siberia range is in the middle of nowhere (and shoots 5 *metres* to 200 *yards*)
(edit: originally said 128 Lanes at Century, from a (UK) NRA page that was in error)
The longest distance on Stickeldown is 1200 yds btw ;)
@Superdude70 Back in the day I took an Aussie into Fulton's at Bisley. I just walked in nonchalantly as usual, whereas he acted like he was walking on hallowed, sacred ground! :D
How does one get invited?
tacfoley don’t know anyone from GB unfortunately. But I shoot whenever I get a chance when I’m off of work. Mostly plinking with my enfields love those rifles
Very good! Having a sore right knee, supported kneeling is out; I have to go for sitting.
I see you were blessed with decent weather,i used a MAS 36 a couple of years ago on this with the hail that hit us and the thick front sight i couldn't see much haha, well done on you're shooting.
You can bring a MAS 36 to Bisley? I wonder how they usually fare
@@lptomtomyes you can use foreign issue rifles mine did ok but not brilliant it was fun though.
Congratulations Mike for winning and I did like your video.
0032, 15/05/2020.
Congratulations from America. I have several excellent British Military Rifles.
Great shooting
Looks fun.
Nice shooting! I went through the NRA probationary course last month, really ought to get down to Bisley again soon now that I'm a full member. These HSR/CSR events do look like a lot of fun, maybe I'll see you at one some time. Thrashing me no doubt.
Also, the comment about the competition being run "like a train" really shows you've been living in Switzerland for too long haha
So nice to watch a video about shooting, hear "NRA" and be able to think, 'Oh yeah, those guys. They do some great work!'
Yes very difficult using service grade bolt action rifles. It is very fun and great training.
Congrats and well done. Would love to cross the pond and shoot in one of these matches.
Congratulations. It is a great achievement. Now you can change the name to gold bloke on the range...
i quite liked the head cam on the action, its a perspective you dont often get
It wasn't the intended view, which was intended to take in the targets. For that reason I stopped using the headcam footage after a certain point.
@@BlokeontheRange Didn't the chap filming the side angle notice that the headcam was pointing at the barrel, it did look as though a bit more elevation was available? Don't know that it would've helped though - the targets were struggling to show up on my laptop screen anyway :-D Congrats on your score.
Way to go Bloke!!!! I could hit the berm at 300 with irons.... impressive shooting skills!
Lovely!
Nice shooting 👍🇺🇸🪖
That looked like loads of fun. And being on the historical ranges at Bisley? Bucket list item. I could bring a Lithgow SMLE and an 1950's M1 to that.
You couldn't bring a 1950's M1 there ;)
Nice shooting Mike, 225 is a great score and would put towards the top of the CSR Service optic shooters with 4.5mag
Thanks - CSR is shot on smaller targets though, as you'll see in an upcoming video.
Nice shooting, congrats. Good thing you won as that phantom 10th shot would really rankle away had it dropped you to second!
Your left handed shooting neighbour looks to have given up on his hearing :D
In-ear defenders if you look closely.
@@robertstallard7836 Ok, perhaps the 'ear hole' I'm seeing is actually black earpro.
@@SportbikerNZ Either that or he hasn't washed his ears for 10 years!
Those Garands make me cry
Jolly good Ol boy!
Now that DOES make 60 year old me itch to get back "into-it"
Oops having spent quite a few very happy Bisley's shooting with Belfast QUB OTC
watch and shoot. much more refined than “rotate your selector from safe to semi and scan your lane”
Actually a standard UK Armed Forces range firing order :) (Former SA(B)90 RO here :) )
Well done! Shame there just isn't the number of ranges that have the sufficiant distances and facilities for such matches here in the UK.
Desire to own an SMLE or No.4 intensifies. Nice job on the second shoot.
You know it might be easier to mount your GoPro off your earpro? A few of the guys I've seen over here mount them off their cans, facemasks or helmets to one side, so you can see down the weapon and to the target better even if canting the head to aim.
In the CCF I got my Marksman 1st Class in 69 with a Mark 4
I was 16
Was long time since I did any shooting there early 90 when I was in the army shooting team with slr and bren
Varusteleka has become youtube gun channel Gucci gear. Only the most fire hype beasts and middle finger trigger pullers are in the know.
Well done. Do they have a martini- Henry category?
Well done. Thanks for sharing! Tangent, where can I find a fleece jacket like that?
Thanks. It's not a fleece jacket, it's wool and you can buy it here: www.varusteleka.com/en/product/sarma-tst-woolshell-jacket/59958
The straight pull M1 Garand. I know that's way its gota be in the UK. I also know you saw it, ain't I right comments section ;).
too bad about the head cam. I used to know some one who would travel all the way to England from Canada for the Bisley match. Looks like fun.
Stupid youtube dropped my sub. Had to resub. Is this now a thing? Great info and video Bloke.
Congrats on winning! Surrey...? You haven't by chance met Matt Easton have you?
Not in person
Shot a 600 yd F Class match with a M1 (iron sights) some years back. Shot a 268/400. No gold and nothing to brag about but I was happy with my score.
Good shooting - well done on Gold :D Also - is that rifle a tad short for you? Had me thinking you might need a butt pad or similar on it, as it looks like it kept slipping off your shoulder, a key indicator to an iffy fit? Or is that prohibited by the rules of the shoot in question?
Both. It has a short butt, which may be too short (I have N and L available to me, but I shoot well with it as-is, so haven't changed it over) and adding a butt pad is against the rules. That being said, rifles with smooth, curved metal butt plates tend to slip all over the place on recoil irrespective so I'm not sure it would make any difference.
Bisley ranges are very big, there are different ranges for different diciplines. A couple of friends i served with were on the same shoot bloke. Both own number 4's i was looking for them but didnt see them . Well done on the gold, love a number 4 however here because o have no where in my house to have a secure gun safe i could not get my licience
Keeping the rifle at a club or at a gunsmith's is an alternative arrangement that might work for you so is worth looking into.
@@BlokeontheRange i agree but the nearest gunsmith is 10 miles away . The club is a thought as my nearest cub is Diggle ranges , thanks for that would love to get one and see you at Bissley, i have been many years ago on a millitary shooting competition as part of my batalion shooting team .
In that case, check out the latest Home Office guidance, which includes guidelines on securing a cabinet to a fixed caravan... I'm sure your house is more solid than a fixed caravan.
Thanks i will , much apreciated mate, looks like the air rifles are being sold and a no 4 is replacing them 😆😆😆
I just remembered something. Many years ago, not long after arriving in the US, my non gun loving ex-wife allowed me to enter an off the beaten track fishing tackle store. Often these stores can turn up some weird oldie fashioned gear that used to be very effective in the their day, just now superseded. There was very interesting old gear in there. Over the counter, for sale, and easily acquired then, in Connecticut, one wood furnitured SLR, and one Lee Enfield #4. I expressed interest and before I knew it I was sitting in the car empty handed.
Glad you managed to alleviate your self of the wealth reducing agent...lol
Well done good shooting, hope you filmed the CSR comp. now do you think they will let you back...
I did film it - although my talky stuff was crap so will have to be re-done in Switzerland (which I think will ultimately be better cos I can make it tighter having reviewed the footage)
Bloke on the Range look forward to seeing the CSR, out of interest what 303 ammo were you using. Thanks
S&B 180gn FMJ
3:19 (I don't know how to tag), Herman the German looks like he's tripping balls, with the orange shot indicators in.
Straight pull M1...😱😱
I want a straight pull ar just to be different I live in Texas. Lol
Very interesting and entertaining video. Are you wearing Varusteleka's Sarma TST Woolshell jacket? How is it holding up to use? Looks like you even have Thor's hammer on your right sleeve.
Yes. It's holding up very well to use, but the elbow pads are too far to the outside for shooting - you can see how I'm on the inside edges of the pads, which is kinda annoying...
@@BlokeontheRange Luckily for you, the ground is soft in this video. Cheers and I look forward to your next video.
I mean, I'm on the pads, but it would be better for my elbows to be on the centreline than close to the edge.
@@BlokeontheRange Perfectionist engineer in you coming out.
Hell, how do you get a rifle through customs, let alone Ammo??
By having a European Firearms Pass, an invitation to a competition and a British Visitor's Firearms Permit.
Bloke,
Can a yank enter this type of competition? I would gladly jump through hoops to bring my M1903 & ammo. Have you experienced anyone silly enough to travel that far to shoot HSR?
Was the ammo issued or did you bring it? Does it cost anything to challenge a score? In the US it costs a few bucks, which you get back if the challenge is upheld.
Bring your own ammo. In principle a challenge is £1 but nobody asked for it :)
As the bloke said a challenge normally a £1 which goes in Help for Heroes charity bucket, but if the challenge is upheld nobody is cheap enough to take their money out of the charity bucket.
What ammo were you using do you use mk7 original ammo or something else? How do you get your rifle zero for 300 yards? Did you get to shoot some zeroing rounds first?
S&B 180gn FMJ. I zeroed it at a range back home. You get a couple of sighting shots on certain practices, as noted in the video.
@@BlokeontheRange Your video motivated me to buy a No 4 and shoot service rifle. I had one as a kid but ruined the barrel is short order by shooting corrosive primed ammo out of it. We didn't know how to clean them properly.
I'll probably reload for it. They are fricking expensive now for what they are. You can't get a no 4 with a good barrel in Australia for much under $1000.00
in the opening scenes it looks like that M1 has been converted to a straight pull.
is this some sort of legal requirement - or just necessary for this match?
@Anthony Chappell that's what I suspected - thank you.
Self-loading centrefire is Section 5 (prohibited) since Hungerford.
@@alun7006 thank you
Them wee bobbity men are at it again.
So if I purchased say a Ruger American that takes AR magazines I can shoot Service Optic? I didn't know there was a discipline that allowed telescopic sights. My eyes aren't up to open sights. I shall have to have a look at this......
Not in Historic Service Rifle you couldn't cos it's not Veteran (pre-1945). You might be able to shoot it in Civilian Service Rifle as Service Optic, and you could certainly shoot it in CSR Practical Optic.
@@BlokeontheRange Thank you. After posting I found the appropriate NRA booklet on line. I am not familiar with all competitions. BZ for the win.
are you using a Chinese aftermarket sks bullet pouch that was made of artificial leather?
Yes
@@BlokeontheRange aaaand did you like it?
Well it holds stuff! :D It holds a Tikka mag and some other stuff. So I'll be using it again!
@@BlokeontheRange glad to see you like it lol
You are allowed a sling standing offhand?
Yes, but there's really no point to using it in that position.
Check our the lefty!
What, no K31?! ;-) I´d actually be interested in the logistics, such as paperwork, permits and travel
European firearms pass + British Visitor's Firearms Permit + invitation letter.
Bloke on the Range invitation letter? What is that?
It's a letter inviting you to the shoot.
Straigt pull M1s huh... thats just wrong :(
