    Episode 3 will be ready early next week, Tues, or Wed at the latest.
    I was able to sneak away for a quick, long distance paddle overnight, a couple days ago, I had been home for 8 days after my big trip, and was itching to get out and push myself, so I still have to edit episode 3, but I'll get er did.
    Hopefully this gear video explains all of what I have and why I have it. :)

      Absolutely hooked on this. TA outdoors here in the UK comes across really obnoxious and patronising, your videos are fun, informative, relaxing and awesome. When you lost the fish twice i just sat there in disbelief. Keep up your excellent work and I'm stoked for episode 3!

    I think people are saying it's more that 10 items because they don't realize this trip is mimicking Alone to some degree. That's the point. There was more that you could bring, just as you did here that did not count. I thought you explained that well in this video. Thanks!

    Hey Joe I wanted to tell you a story, I grew up from foster home to foster home, then homeless at 16. I grew up in the city following the wrong people. I have died twice my hear stopped been stabbed, tied up and almost murdered. Ten to 15 years I spent in and out of jail on my way to prison and I was step away from ruining my life. On the run always looking over my back, I missed out on a child hood and many things people take for granted. While I was like caked up the last time my step father died, he was huge into the outdoors, aNd he watched your channel he would always say I would love your videos. I wasn’t allowed to attend his funeral and it’s still tearing at my heart. I got my ged and am almost graduated from college. When I got out i gathered a few things of his, before his family came and took everything our home cars everything. So I thought I was heading back, I found your channel and you inspired me to get out and I have been since, I have found inner peace, still struggling to keep on the right path. So I want to say thanks Joe Robinet because you have inspired me and it’s life changing, I have never felt as good in my life, I started a RUclips Channel myself it’s been 3 maybe 4 months. Hope you get this, maybe stop by my channel and say hi, see how far I have come, take care joe and Happy Birthday.

    I agree with your item count. 10 things used daily to survive. Other items, like clothes, backpack, personal hygiene, safety equipment, camera equipment - don't count those. Canoe is arguable but what the heck. Birthday present from your girls - essential. Outstanding, wonderful, entertaining videos! Keep em' coming. Best regards.

    I agree some times you have to hold back some video material if you want to write a book like the one you're reading. You would not have anything new for your fans to read if they did buy your future book out of your journal. So I take it 7 more video's from this trip unless they are broken up into more. I am sold on round bill hats with bug nets built in, there are baseball style hats with bug nets built in also. So far I have had success with long sleeve nylon high SPF sun shirts to defeat black flies & mosquitos.There are a couple of shirts, hats, pants with bug repllent in them last numerous washings. If you pack braided fish line (20 to 100 pound) in your fish gear , add a needle or two and you can sew most anything, trot / limb line heavier weight line , I have fished stained water with 20# no leader, clear water add a mono leader, you can tie a tarp with it, so far I have not tried a snare with braided fish line. I like your vidoes. thumbs up.

    The solar panel is a nice touch given how much sun you have that far north. I personally would have included one of the thermoelectric chargers I've got. One is better suited to a campfire, the other works off a chafer or small pot of coals and has an integral pot to boil water for soup, sanitizing drinking water, that sort of thing, that's the "cold" side of the thermoelectric charger. Both come from Stower (I kickstarted both projects). I might have used my Solo Stove & pot kit, so I wouldn't have to worry so much about making a firepit, but that's me. For blades, I have an "Original Belt and Boot Knife" fixed, with a leaf-shaped blade. It's a really good blade, not huge, with a good shape. But I also would have brought my wood carving knife, because making stuff like spoons and forks and such is easier with the proper tool, and the larger straight blade would probably have worked better for filleting fish (though I can't even eat fish, I'm deathly allergic) or small game. A snare kit would have been my choice over a fishing rod/tackle, given my inability to eat fish.
    All this is predicated on my wishful thinking that I WASN'T actually disabled from a broken neck back in 2006. I'd love to be able to go camping and this sort of stuff, but that accident sidelined me rather thoroughly. I DO still collect useful bits of gear, just in case we have an emergency situation that calls for it. We're prone to ice storms in the early part of the year, and we inevitably lose power during them. Once we lost power for a week, with terribly cold conditions, and my emergency stove and gear kept us eating and drinking hot stuff instead of having only cold water to drink. (I won't do without my hot coffee, dammit.) That scared the piss out of me, and since then I've collected better gear.
    I do admire your ability to survive on minimal stuff. Keep it up and stay alive!

    The way that I think about it in terms of your ten items and then the "other things that don't count" is that you sort of have ten tools which you use, then other accessories that you just need anyway, like clothes, etc. But they aren't the tools that you're using to set up camp, to catch fish, etc.

    I've gotten into your videos pretty heavily lately. I have two gear questions 1) what is your preferred tarp size and brand for a trap shelter setup 2) have you ever tried a top quilt with a foot box in place of a sleeping bag? Thanks for the videos. If you did a live stream to do some q&a I'm sure I could think of more questions.

    • @bena3341
      @bena3341 4 года назад

      In this series he uses a 13x20 tarp which just seems way too big. I have an 8x12 and a 10x10 (I use metres but have converted the sizes to feet for you mericans) which are both more than big enough for a tarp shelter for two people and certainly enough for one person. I have been thinking about getting a 10x15 that is the same brand as my 8x12 but any larger than that just seems like overkill. Smaller is easier to setup and easier to keep warm and you should always have enough airflow to keep condensation down. I like the versatility of having a square and a rectangular tarp depending on what kind of shelter you want to make. The square one is also ultra light nylon so weighs only 400grams which is about half the rectangular one. He seems to use various brands. I really like DD hammocks brand tarps. Great value for money, lots of features and several size and weight options.
      Not a huge fan of quilts. You can save a little weight and size but I feel like they are only useful for thru hiking where 200 grams makes a difference. In this situation a sleeping bag makes more sense because you are sleeping outside with no sleeping pad so you need to keep the warmth in and the bugs out.

    Aw man I feel so spoiled, after the hour+ videos this doesn’t fill my void 😭. But In all seriousness I’m loving the miniseries, the work you put in for both the actual trip and the editing is amazing. Thanks for bringing us along and I can’t wait for the next episode
