    Hey Joe, if you're having trouble landing the fish, SHARPEN your hooks with a nail file or small similar shaped sharpening stone. Even brand new unused hooked are not half as sharp as they can be with just a little lick of a stone.
    It really seems to me if you're having a problem setting the hook its an edge thing. Especially with Pike and their hard boney heads.
    Its amazing how dull a hook can be even when it feels sharp. And its even more amazing how a good edge on the hook really helps with issues like this.

    Joe when you are very hungry your blood glucose levels are down and upon eating, blood is diverted to the stomach and intestines for use in digestion and absorption of food.Additionally the pancreas releases insulin to get glucose into the tissue cells for energy after you eat. This is why you feel more tired after eating. Preferential blood flow, insulin surge and dehydration are combining to cause this.

    About your concerns about energy during the video (I know you're back already): it probably wasn't the fish making you tired. You didn't have very much to eat altogether while you were out there, and you had been active for 3 days by that point. You were also fighting the wind all day while walking around. Additionally, try bringing barley instead of rice for longer trips. Rice is a simple carb and causes sharp spikes in energy & then energy plummets, whereas complex carbs like Barley and Oats release every slowly and steadily. You could also consider bringing some protein / oat bars just in case for when you do find yourself in deep energy lulls like in this video.

    • @2DReanimation
      @2DReanimation 5 лет назад

      Yes, he definitely should look into nutrition and cooking a bit more for any future long trips. It would make it a lot more enjoyable, as you have more energy and don't feel depleted of anything. Just off the top of my head, lentils would be excellent. As you can not only cook them directly, but you can sprout them and get a good source of vitamins. For the dehydrated vegetables, you will just cook away the already lowered vitamin-C content.
      So in 3 days you'd have some fresh sprout salad to replenish the vit-C. Or be prepared to eat fish raw to not become fatally depleted in vit-C.

    • @theippster8891
      @theippster8891 5 лет назад +1

      uruk Ya good point, as lentils are also a protein source. Maybe even take some vitamin fortified protein powder to top you up on a day long paddle with a water filter bottle. He takes such long stretches with out fuel doing so much physical labour it make me tired watching sometimes lol

    • @2DReanimation
      @2DReanimation 5 лет назад

      Yeah, I guess it's good enough, but heat destroys vit-C. But as it's been used for centuries or even forever to prevent scurvy. Though they didn't know it as such, just something that made you feel better on a low-vitamin winter diet.
      So yeah, it does work, but it's slowly broken down into other things, I don't know the exact reactions.
      So better yet would be to just chew some pine or spruce needles and spit the fiber. But if you're boiling all your water, it's an excellent way to make a tastier water... if you like it, that is.
      I wouldn't recommend the liver of a predatory fish, but fish-liver is also a good source of vitamins. Also the roe. That'd be a treat.

    1 lbs of lean pike is 500 calories, so you'd need to catch and eat 5 lbs of pike and therefore need to catch 5 fish the size Joe caught. If you ate the skin and brain only, you'd only need to eat 2 lbs, but you'd need to throw away most of the fish and would probably need 10 fish to create the 2 lbs of skin and throw away 8lbs of lean meat. Question is, can anyone really eat 5 lbs of fish a day? This is what people mean by protein poisoning. You just can't eat that much lean meat to replace the calories you burn.

    • @bygonebee9129
      @bygonebee9129 6 лет назад +1

      I was just about to comment this, after eating a fish that size you feel it should power you through the day but instead it only keeps you going for a couple of hours. I can keep myself alive for a long time in the nature but hunger and weakness are a constant companion. For fishing I've moved to setups you can just leave and come back to every now and then, actively casting is awfully time consuming and unreliable. Late in the summer when the mushrooms and berries are in season it briefly feels I´m living off the land and not simply surviving but in a long run I feel hunting and trapping is something I must get into if I really wish to feel like I´m self sufficient out there. It´s a hard challenge but for me the most exciting one there is.

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman 6 лет назад +10

      Yes, sharp hooks, but also he badly needs a net for landing pike. Lifting a few pounds out of the water is always a high risk for loss.

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman 6 лет назад +6

      Berries is a tough one. I find 1 lbs of berries will last about the same as a belly full of lean meat. So if I ate 1 lbs of berries and 1 lbs of lean meat, then I would be good for 4 hours. If I could repeat this, I'd be okay indefinitely, but that's a lot of material to put through your digestive system and you start to poop 3 times a day. Ask me how I know this!!!

    • @bygonebee9129
      @bygonebee9129 6 лет назад +3

      I find berries and many other plants work best when you eat small quantities but very often while performing other tasks, keeps your blood sugar balanced between meals and isn't too hard on your digestion. I've definitely eaten too much berries, mushrooms and birch sap at once to know how fun the aftermath is without a toilet. :D I've tried to learn all the possible wild edibles in my area because hunger is much more bearable if you still get all the vitamins and nutrients your body needs. Even if you could eat enough rice and pike to satisfy your hunger it still makes you feel horrible in a couple of days when the nutrients you don't get from those start to get depleted.

    Re : Low Energy Levels
    When you don't eat enough calories, you're likely to feel tired most of the time.
    The number of calories needed for basic functions within a 24-hour period is referred to as your resting metabolic rate.
    Most people have a resting metabolic rate higher than 1,000 calories per day. Adding physical activity can increase your daily needs by another 1,000 calories or more.
    Restricting intake to fewer than 1,000 calories daily can slow down your metabolic rate and lead to fatigue since you're not taking in enough calories to support even the basic functions that keep you alive.
    Summary: Eating too few calories can lead to fatigue due to insufficient energy
    Enjoy your videos :)

      One of the survivors of alone was able to keep fed mainly be creating a fish broth with the left over undesirable bits of fish, the bones, head, cartlidge and non digestion organs. There is alot of energy and nutrients and even vitamins in those parts, by cooking it low and slow they leach out into the water, after cooking remove what's left and add whatever other food you have like foraged veges and you have a very filling meal with no waste.

      In Saskatchewan, we use Burbot or refer to them as Dog Fish and that is where Poor Man's Lobster comes from around our part of the World. Boil the cubes in water and them in butter. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. Or do it on a cookie sheet basting it with butter like you would a lobster.

    This series is so awesome. I discovered bushcraft a few weeks ago and have done nothing but research it since. Due to issues I have with my back, I'm trying to find a nice median between ultralight backpacking and bushcrafting. Watching your channel has already taught me so much. I do have a budget for how much to spend on my hobbies each month, so over the next few months I'll be putting together my pack. Hopefully by late summer / fall I'll be able to do my first overnighter. I also have a rottweiler, so it'd be awesome to take him

    Love the channel mate, very glad I found you and very appreciative of the time and effort you put into filming these trips. As a Wilderness EMT/Medic/Firefighter of almost 2 decades and a very experienced backcountry traveler... FOR GOD SAKES DRINK MORE WATER. You really need it to process your food and get the energy out of all the food you eat. I;d also highly suggest you go take a wilderness Medicine class and at the very least get your WFR if you haven't already. You'd be surprised how much of the "common knowledge" medical practices are just rubbish once you really dig into the subject. Been a rafter/backpacker/backcountry explorer for many many years and the medical training I've gotten (and that I now teach to give back to the younger generation of outdoorsmen) has proven to be as valuable as the gear I've acquired.

    Fishing Tip. Sharpen your hooks and make sure to SET the hook before you begin to reel in. And many lures come with cheap dull hooks. I replace them with much better made hooks.

      Yeah, I would use bigger trebles for pike; and also the travel rod he is using doesn’t seem to have much backbone; so setting the hook and keeping the fish pinned would be more of a challenge.

    • @Mr_Wicked

      landing a pike from a canoe is hard enough as is. the second they pop there mouth up out the water they thrash and usually always spit the hook you gotta keep the tip down and keep the head submerged and a net is always helpful.

    Regarding that lunch time fatique...fish are primarily protein which takes the longest and most calories for your body to digest (20-30% of the energy of the protein consumed goes to digesting it)...sounded like you were experiencing the fatigue associated with low intake of carbohydrates. Hi Joe, really digging this series of vids. As an avid fisherman myself here in Australia I couldnt help but notice the high number of fish lost due to poor hookups. I've found from personal experience that swapping out the treble hooks on my lures for slightly larger single hooks helps dramatically with solid hookups resulting in less fish lost at the boat. I mainly swap them out for eye safety as I have seen many a lure spat at the boat narrowly missing the eyes of unsuspecting fisherman. I can see this being beneficial in a survival situation too! Just my 2c. Keep em coming man!
