  • It is incredible that all these years later, Chrono Trigger is still finding new audiences to appreciate the magical whimsy the game emulates. The truest sense of adventure with wonderful music and a story that is abundantly replayable whether you played it when you were 10 or when you are 36. It shows a level of maturity that for the time was really unique and it was a pleasure to experience.

    About Chrono Trigger:
is a 1995 role-playing video game developed and published by Square. It was originally released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System as the first game in the Chrono series. The game's development team included three designers that Square dubbed the "Dream Team": Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of Square's Final Fantasy series; Yuji Horii, creator of Enix's Dragon Quest series; and Akira Toriyama, character designer of Dragon Quest and author of the Dragon Ball manga series. In addition, Takashi Tokita co-directed the game and co-wrote the scenario, Kazuhiko Aoki produced the game,[ Masato Kato wrote most of the story, while composer Yasunori Mitsuda wrote most of the soundtrack before falling ill and deferring the remaining tracks to Final Fantasy series composer Nobuo Uematsu. The game's story follows a group of adventurers who travel through time to prevent a global catastrophe.
Chrono Trigger was a critical and commercial success upon release and is frequently cited as one of the greatest video games of all time. Nintendo Power magazine described aspects of the game as revolutionary, including its multiple endings, plot-related side-quests focusing on character development, unique battle system, and detailed graphics. Chrono Trigger was the second best-selling game of 1995 in Japan, and shipped 2.65 million copies worldwide by March 2003. Excluding the PC version, the game had shipped over 3.5 million copies worldwide by February 2018.
Square released a ported version by Tose in Japan for the PlayStation in 1999, which was later repackaged with a Final Fantasy IV port as Final Fantasy Chronicles (2001) for the North American market. A slightly enhanced Chrono Trigger, again ported by Tose, was released for the Nintendo DS in North America and Japan in 2008, and PAL regions in 2009. The game has also been ported to i-mode, the Virtual Console, the PlayStation Network, iOS, Android, and Windows.

@@doscuramenos Hey look for the relics in game. A lot of them can be used to fine tune the combat to your liking. Honestly I enjoyed the game greatly. A lot of people compare it to Chrono Trigger, but I didn't enjoy it based on that, there are a lot of fun and wonderful things it does on its own even if at parts it tries to pay homage to the big RPGs of the past. If you give it a little more time till all the mechanics open up which actually happens later than you would think I think you will enjoy it a lot.

Chrono Trigger's pacing is one of the things I appreciate most. You are moving from goal to goal with little deviation for most of the game. Only when you are finally out from under the immediate threat of danger do the extra side quests pop up. A great game with little to no filler.

I truly believe that Chrono Trigger is the one JRPG everyone has to play, even those who generally dislike the genre. There is just something so magical about experiencing a game that was built from the foundation of gathering a dream team. Akira Toriyama and Yuji Hori made it feel like Dragon Quest. Nobuo Uematsu, Hironobu Sakaguchi and Kazuhiko Aoki made it feel like Final Fantasy. And, even though he was not part of the "Dream Team", Yasunori Mitsuda made it feel like Chrono Trigger. It is truly a beautiful game that will forever stay a classic.

Even before I knew the name of the song was Corridors of Time, it captures that timelessness it's going for. It's an age of infinite potential, and yet it is on the verge of ending for good. There's a tranquility and tragedy to it at the same time. You even know the age is already over, and you're just traveling back to it, yet you're still there, and have full access to its greatness... so is it really even lost? Does the fact that it once existed mean it will always exist?

I have a remix of Corridors of Time that I did about 15 years ago. The song is one of the most remixed tracks in gaming history, and for good reason. The melody of the song has this innate ability to tell a story, and that ability translates across its many remixes, but it's as if the story it tells is different remix to remix. It's incredible that such a simple song can have such a profound impact.

What also blows my mind is this is the midi time period. You have to not just look at the games that were out at the time, but the quality of the midi music. I remember when I first got transported back in time to antiquity with the Kingdom of Zeal and forward in time to the ruined world. I have never experienced such a feeling of wanting to unravel and dive into how the world became the way it was. Why was there a much more advanced civilization in the past? Why isn't the modern day as advanced or more so? How did the world get decimated to the point where hardly any life survives at all? It was like a mystery through time that you unravel by uncovering things in an almost backwards-like way. Being presented with a very profound question and dissecting it as you explore is always so interesting and captivating to me. I don't think any other game has made me feel the way Chrono Trigger did. And I don't even have any sort of nostalgic attachment to it, I first played it at 23.

Theres so much to unpack in Chrono Trigger, so much greatness; the story is wonderful and well written, the technical prowess of the game makes it a classic that still works pretty well and the art carries it. Lie you and many other, those two tracks will forever hold a special place in my heart, along Frog's theme, the Mysterious Door's theme and the bonus track of the singing mountain, the emotions they all carry made the joys of the triumphant moments that much stronger.

I never owned a S Nintendo, but we had a Sega. Anyway, my best friend had the Snes. When this game came out it was just completely understood that I would be living at his house every day off school. For many months we dedicated free time to play this through. I had absolutely no problem just watching him play the story through since we were always experiencing it together. It was so, so much different than other games. It was just this obvious thing we had to experience and finish. We never questioned our attraction to this game. I've replayed the game several times over the years. It's always a pleasure. The music is like 70% of the experience. I just really want to be there at the studio back when Square created this incredible thing.

This is why I appreciate music in older games. Music had to tell the story. Today, we have voice overs and graphics that are SO detailed that the music does not actually need to be as deep and moving. Our imaginations had to do work, and we connected with the music in ways that doesn’t happen today.
Take Kazuya’s Tekken 2 theme. There was so much sadness and anger in the theme, and the title is Emotionless Passion! My goodness! Things were different back then as Kazuya couldn’t exactly just talk…so the music talked for him.

For me? Corridors of time tells of a long lost era, a time and a place rooted in your past, a place you can never go back to, a time you can not get back.
Schala's theme is of tragic loss, schala was a prisoner to her fate and became lost to time for it. I lost a sister and I don't think there will ever be a time in my life where I will be able to stop grieving, but I like to listen to various remasters and remakes of schala's theme to help me cope and grieve.

We are really blessed with Yasunori Mitsuda, a lot of games gives so much credit to Nobuo for Final Fantasy that sometimes Yasunori gets a little bit forgotten, Yasunori gave us Chrono, Xenogears among many others and then the entire Xenoblade series it's on him and other composers, still a super relevant active composer in 2023, not many gaming composers from the 90's are active today or as relevant as Yasunori Mitsuda, his theme "a life sent on" from Xenoblade 3 is something especial.

Arriving at 12.000 B.C. was the most profound experience I have ever had in fiction. It blew my mind so hard I'm still in shock 29 years later. I was so lost in immersion that I didn't even realize there was no combat during that entire sequence, it's as if the game itself forgot it was a game to become infinity for a brief moment.
When I hear Schala's Theme I immediately wonder what does it mean that Lavos bestowed us with consciousness only to harvest our DNA after our evolution? Or what does it mean that we have to kill that which granted us consciousness in order to keep living?
I think these thoughts is what Schala's sadness represents. Our regret of having to go against our creator. Our sadness of being but a tool by that which granted us our greatest blessing while deeply wondering if it could have been a different future.

It, of course, has beautiful, gorgeous music, gameplay that has aged… fine, a story that covers so much territory while still not losing its way, characters that are interesting in both design and function, and mechanically revolutionized many games even mechanically by introducing things like New Game+. Heck it even has choices that matter in the game! Even as not a fan, I can easily say this is a timeless classic that can stand up to even some of the best modern JRPGs and other games. Chrono Trigger is an absolute classic, both the game and its OST. From a gameplay perspective, what we now consider common, NG+ was something unheard of and one of the reasons why I kept on playing the game.
And thanks for mentioning Corridors of Time and Schala's Theme. Those are two of my favorite pieces of music from the game. I have heard different covers of Corridors of Time, yet so far none have captured the same feeling as the original (though an acapella version came VERY close). Loved it so much that sometimes I just stop while in Zeal just to listen to the song. As for Schala's Theme, that song hit me instantly. It was unlike anything I heard at the time. The version that I do like is the To Faraway Times arrangement. That one was practically a 'Schala's greatest hits' arrangement with vocals.

Chrono Trigger was the one JRPG I learned by heart as a kid. Each and every part, twist, turn and secret.
It took dozens of playthroughs. Enjoyable, enjoyable playthroughs where I simply basked in its unparalleled glory.
It's funny you mentioned that totally optional sidequest with Prometheus and its iconic scene. I remember it took me about a year of constant playthroughs to finally figure out how to initiate it. Mostly because they only give you two hints that are actually more or less obscure. But the quest itself is just pure magic. And I actually just ended discovering it by sheer chance, failing the first time the other half of the quest; which felt so bad, but Chrono Trigger was the game that gave us New Game +, and that's another reason I love it so much.
But once I learned that final secret I had yet to see... the whole story felt so complete, and yet it still leaves me with that sweet feeling of vastness. Of more things that can exist beyond its reach.
It's... sequel of sorts, Chrono Cross is also one of my most cherished gaming experiences, but for (vastly more philosophical) reasons.
To this day, and after twenty seven years since I first played Chrono Trigger for the first time, I still enjoy this true timeless classic, savoring its magnificence.
I look forward to your analysis of its music, especially when we reach "certain" themes. I just love to listen to professionals telling us the actual musical reasons why this game's music is unlike any other you've ever listen to, or are likely to listen.

Good stuff, thanks for sharing the experience with us! Looking forward to the thoughts on Sea of Stars music - I'm curious if you'll be able to tell which tracks were Mitsuda-san's!
Edit: I remember as a kid when this came out just how much I loved Frog. It's interesting to me as I've aged how much more I appreciate Robo now too. I love the character type now who is suffering, but is still always smiling for the party and friends. When he's assuring Lucca at the end that he knows the future has a place for him, despite actually knowing it might not be true, it hits hard to me now. I wonder if others have noticed shifts in the characters they latch onto as time goes on for them, too.

Ever since I played it 20 years ago it's been my #1 game ever. I must have played it over hundreds of times and I never got tired of it. The story, the music, everything about it resonate with my soul. I'm so happy that you've loved it!

Oh man I was waiting for you to stream these on youtube but seems like you already finished it, and checking back in your VODs channel I totaly missed out on those vods. But I'm so very glad to hear that you had a wonderful time playing this game. There are few piece of fiction that live up to the over hype they garner, and Chrono Trigger is definetly one of those pieces of fiction. I was too young to play this game when it came out, but I have fond memories of watching my older siblings play this game. Even if my first exprience with this game was through theirs', there's something special and meaningful through each playthrough. As I gotten older and played it for myself, and really dove right into the frey of time, I find more this gem of a game has within it's 20 or so hours of gameplay and story. Little quirks and quips I was too young to catch or things only the eye and mind of a kld to fully appreciate and cherish.
But like my first and initial experience with this game, I have a fondness to experience this game through others. Watching someone exprience this game blind for the first time always harkens back to my childhood. So I'm looking forward to watching your VODs of your experience beyond part 2.

I was 15 when Chuggaa released his let's play of CT, which I then played by myself after watching. You're just like me with Corridors of Time and Schala's theme touching you the most of the tracks. As soon as he got to Zeal I just knew that the game was legendary. Schala's story made me cry haha, characters with tragic stories like her just make me feel so much emotion

I love this game so much. It wasn't released in the UK til the DS release, so I didn't grow up with it, but it became one of my favourites. It's so perfectly paced and such a fantastic soundtrack.

I'm honestly so happy that you played Chrono Trigger! I knew you'd fall in love with the soundtrack, but it really is one piece of the puzzle that makes a tremendous whole. One of my favorites from the OST includes Sealed Door -- another sad, deeply atmospheric piece that perfectly captures the feeling of its area and character.
What really impresses me is that despite the myriad styles, each song seems tailor made to fit its area and character. There is no song that's ever out of place or just "there" -- it all fits the atmosphere so well and helps carry the story. Corridors of Time and Schala's Theme are perhaps the pinnacle, so I'm glad you set time apart to discuss them and break them down in detail! Excited to see the other songs you explore!

I only experienced Chrono Trigger as an adult in my 20s, last year, and I have come to consider it one of the best games ever made. It's as good for me today as I'm sure it was for many back when it came out. And it's soundtrack is godly, one of the best ever composed.

I had the opportunity to play it many years ago on the DS. “Masterpiece” doesn’t even does Justice to how incredible it is. It’s, JRPG transcended! And it includes the music! Magus Theme will always give me chills!!

Chrono Trigger was one of the games that helped me learn english, along with FF6. Very similar experiences for me. Great stories, great characters, great music and imho, pixel graphics peaked in that time and they hold up really, really well. Magus' Boss theme is one of my all time favorites, but really, the whole OST is full of great songs.

At my 32, I keep on playing this game.
I just reach lvl 99 first time in all my chars a few months ago, and almost 2 months before I got 99999999 gold xd.
I find this game almost 11 years ago, and I think I'll be a short game, I'd never played an SNES RPG before, and when I find Nadia and rescue her, I think the game was over. But it wasn't, and it was an amazing experience. I didn't finish the game that time, but when I got my phone and time, I download an emulator and Chrono Trigger, and I finish the game for first time almost 8 years ago.
My favorite SNES game, and one of my favorites RPG's all time.

Great vid again cant wait to play chrono trigger. Have u heard of a game called sea of stars? Its a retro inspired rpg that was inspired by games like chrono trigger and its music, and sea of stars music is also beautiful. They even got Mitsuda to work on some songs I know he worked on "coral cascades" but some other really good ones that I could only find on youtube was "Broken World" from a channel called eternal engine I cant find the whole sountrack anywhere but I highly recommend checking it out.

Chrono Trigger came out when I was a teen and I think the thing that calls me back to it so often is that it's a fundamentally hopeful game about our fundamentally hopeless desire to set things right. To Far Away Times is probably one of the most emotionally resonant pieces of music I've ever heard composed.
Another game from this time period that hits me in a similar way is the (unreleased in North America) Enix RPG Terranigma.

  • @Lightninja-Supertom

Schalas theme, in comparison to the singing in "Corridors of Time", sounds like you can hear crying/screaming/moaning. internal pain, that cannot be shown to anyone... or there will be consequences.

It's been quite a while since I last played it, but yeah, I never stopped to think what it means to be a person alive in this time period. Maybe the whole message of the game flew over my head, but anyways, thank you for your reflections
Edit: Also, I'd love to know your impressions on Terranigma if you ever get the chance to play that, it's also a SNES RPG full of messages about the relationship between civilization and nature, cycles of life and death and such. It's the most beautiful game ever made in my opinion

The music of Chrono Trigger is amazing especially considering the restraints of the hardware, it's insane what composers were able to do back then. Yasunori Mitsuda's music is among my favorites. Speaking of, Chrono Cross has even better music imo so I'm gonna keep pushing for more of that, so many enchanting and beautiful pieces of music!

Chrono Trigger is brilliant. It is just so good, and has remained so today, the streamlining of the systems, the fun combo magic, the battles on the exploration map, and the wonderful story, music and characters ironically transcend time.
Corridors of Time is just wondrous awe of an advanced magical place, floating in the sky, everyone else in time has forgotten. Schala's Theme is mystery and magic, but also deep human emotion of sadness and longing. Two just fantastic songs from a truly timeless OST.

Man... If you want another Chrono Trigger type soundtrack to react to - try Sea of Stars.
It just came out, 10 tracks are done by the same composer of Chrono Trigger, is inspired by Chrono Trigger and other 90s RPGs, but hits... a little different. Like Chrono Trigger hits all the ups and downs - Sea of Stars is just fun, also each track has like two or three different arrangements.
