17:45 The Healing Potion sound is arguably one of the most iconic for me (alongside the Town Portal sound). I've always wondered how the sound team came with this idea. I mean, I imagine the team sitting and thinking "OK, how do we do a sound for a potion?" And the result was a masterpiece. I also think that the limitation of soundboards allows for the creation of more iconic sounds in gaming. If you compare the sound design of D2 and D3, the one in D2 sounds more unique, compared to the more "realistic" sounds in D3. This kind of limitation allows for the designers to be imaginative and create sound effects that "stick"; a prime example of this is all of Mario sounds in all his games, classic sounds that became iconic and are still used to this day.
Digital editing is a blessing and a curse. Nowadays you can do everything completely digital, or just buy premade SFX libraries. It used to be you'd have foley artists who would take physical materials and use them creatively to create different sounds. I have no idea, but I feel certain they're a dying art.
@@KyleBaran90 big companies like Blizzard still craft their own sound effects, thankfully. If you check the Heroes of the Storm behind the scenes videos, you'll see the amazing work their sound designers do in the most creative ways.
Not sure about potion sound, but many others sounds in D2 are just from stock libraries. You can hear many of them in movies. I think wooden door opening sound was in Indiana Jones and Leaper monster sounds were recently used in Young Sheldon Season 01 Episode 20 (starts at 22s v=taqGgWSGRvM). There were others, but can't remember them now. Here on RUclips people show how sound effects get reused in movies, many of them will be familiar to gamers.
@@RenamedChannel I believe they use a combination of in-house and stock sound effects. Speaking of which I noticed in SC1, the sound of a protoss warping in a building is extremely common; I've heard it in almost every sci-fi movie involving anything that's exotic/alien and contains some electricity
Some sound files are raw sounds, which are manipulated further before being added as a final product. Some assets might've also been in the game's directory, but never used. This goes for textures as well as sound effects.
How is it that all these classic sound effects were basically completely ignored in Diablo 3? Imagine if the Legend of Zelda did that? people would flip!

from ages like 4-8 my favorite movie was fantasia- then i didn't watch it for like 16 years until one night in my college years I got the highest I've ever been in my life and watched about 20 minutes before I had to turn it off due to nostalgic overload. I'm about 6 minutes into this shit and I'm just about ready to turn it off haha
Is there item drops sound effect? For instance, rune drop sound effect when popping chest is pretty important. You can pop the chest without waiting for it if you know the rune sound effect.

Earporn. Potions, gold and dropping items.
I love the shield blocking sound effect. Huge improvement over Diablo 1 that only has the same sound as melee weapons pick up/drop/place sound.
18:17
Some of the item dropping sounds at 17:13 were created using the hubcap of one of the game's producer's car.
Is there a video or link with more info on how they made the other sounds? Trying to figure it out
