  • FOREST OF DEAN DISTRICT WALK FEATURING BLAKENEY, GATCOMBE, PURTON AND ETLOE
    "Blakeney, Gatcombe, Purton and Etloe”
    Filmed 30th May 2024
    Post-production completed 14th June 2024
    I continue beside the River Severn, just a few more miles downstream from places featured in my previous film.
    One of the highlights of this walk includes visiting the site where the old Severn railway bridge once stood, before it partially collapsed and was eventually dismantled.
    Filmed in the Forest of Dean District in the county of Gloucestershire. Locations include Blakeney, Gatcombe, Purton and Etloe.
    Written, presented, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.

    What beautiful villages there are around there. I'm sure the house prices are steep too. In regards the inn, which is now a home. No matter where you go in life, you never forget your roots and your upbringing. You have so many happy memories of that area. It will always be your spiritual home. Those signs looked new. I figure they've put them on the wrong side of the river. Shame about the bridge. Must have been great to watch the trains cross it back in the day. Loved what they've done with the rowing boats by making them a feature. Quite shocked to see you upload again so soon. It was a nice surprise. Enjoyable as always. Thanks Patrick 😊

    • @solitaryrambler
      @solitaryrambler  4 месяца назад +1

      I shall be uploading weekly now for the most part as I've a load of films to catch up on. They sure are pretty villages and I would imagine those houses close to the Severn will be high. That was odd about those signs, and some of them look quite new too. That railway bridge would have been great, but I think there was a design fault as boats collided with it more than once. Glad you enjoyed this Kelly, as always thanks for watching and commenting. All the best 👍

    The Severn and Wye have seen so much come and go Patrick. I really enjoyed your walk through the changes fortunes of the area. The river was looking splendid I must say. When you get glimpses after it being obscured, say, down a green lane, there is no doubt a sense of awe. It certainly has the power to take bridges down - well barges and the river do. Good to hear of your joy regarding the trip. All the best as always. Mark

      Morning Mark, yeah both rivers have some fab history and I love the Severn's history in this particularly. As you say, it certainly has the power to take bridges down, and the fate of the railway bridge is both sad and really interesting. I've always felt a sense of awe with the glimpses of the Severn from green lanes, it's a great feeling. Thanks as always Mark for watching and commenting. All the best down there 👍

    It was good that you managed to have a look at the church in Blakeney, Patrick. Amazing it is that there had been evidence of a railway at one time that closed down some years ago. I never knew that there had been a railway across the River Severn in the area that had been struck by vessels, and had to close. The present railway along the shores of the river must be great to have a run along, on the train. The countryside, the villages and the views across the River Severn are all spectacular, and have made this an interesting film, Patrick. Many thanks, and take care,

      I find the history of the old Severn railway bridge fascinating. There wasn't much to see although someone else commented that some of the old foundations can be seen at low tide. I remember riding on that current railway line once or twice when I was a kid and was in awe of the fact that it ran so close to the Severn in places. Glad you enjoyed it Ffranc, thanks as always for watching 👍

    Those footpaths from Gatcombe along the river can be a bit of a challenge in the wet, with many of the steps degraded. Some good work has been done to replace some of the stiles along the way. Thanks for posting. 👍

    aww Im absolutely loving this, its a home from home for me as my family are from nearby Viney hill, I've been to the church at Viney hill but not at Blakeney, even though I know Blakeney like the back of my hand. All these beautiful places that are a part of my life, the sad thing is I don't get back nearly as often as i'd like to so its fabulous seeing you walking the footprints of my youth, its made my day. Blakeney, Gatcombe are unfamiliar places to me, although have done walks in the Forest of Dean many years ago. Most impressed by those haunting twangy guitars at the start. Really liked this track. The Severn looked wider than remembered, but wondering whether there was a later Severn Bridge crossing the River, as used to cross it to reach Wales. Nice for you to return to your childhood memories Patrick. All the best.

      Many thanks for the kind comments Shanita, glad you liked this music. It was something that I recorded off the cuff really, and sometimes they work better than what I've pre-planned. There was a later Severn road bridge to reach Wales, and that's covered in a video I'll publish in November. Thanks Shanita for watching and commenting, all the best to you 👍

    Pity that bridge was destroyed it would have been a good crossing point. I'm guessing that there must have been a ferry before the bridge, which is probably why there are Purtons on both sides of the Severn..
