- FOREST OF DEAN WALK FEATURING WENCHFORD, VINEY HILL, YORKLEY AND BLACKPOOL BRIDGE
"Wenchford, Viney Hill, Yorkley and Blackpool Bridge”
Filmed 31st May 2024
Post-production completed 18th June 2024
Following my last few films, the walk featured in this film moves a little further inland away from the River Severn and takes place more within the boundaries of the Forest of Dean proper.
This was my last day of staying in the Forest of Dean at the end of May 2024, so it was great to shoot this film before I made my journey back home later that afternoon.
Filmed in the Forest of Dean in the county of Gloucestershire. Locations include Wenchford, Viney Hill, Yorkley, Danby Lodge and Blackpool Bridge with the nearby remains of the Roman road.
Written, presented, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.
Special thanks to Dennis and Jan Hensall and Visit Dean Wye for their information used in my research for this film.

"The Solitary Rambler" is my series of amateur films of my journeys in the countryside accompanied by my own musical scores, which I compose and perform on my Yamaha keyboard.
Please note that, as with all the films I make, this is not actually intended to be an extensive guide to the area. This is a mini-movie of my personal journey along the walk, in which I often share some of my own personal stories.
If you are new to my channel, I strongly recommend reading the description under the “about” tab, which will provide a clearer understanding of what to expect in my films: / solitaryrambler
There is also a short “Introduction to the Solitary Rambler” video, which briefly explains what my films are all about: / solitaryrambler

Thoroughly enjoyed this video as my Gran was born at Viney Hill, and her parents were married in the church, and are buried in the churchyard there. My Gramp was born in Yorkley, so it’s brought back a lot of childhood memories watching this. Thank you for a great video.
Glad you enjoyed this, many thanks for taking the time to watch 👍😀
What an inspiring series of walks you've taken us on, Patrick, in an area we don't know very well. It's been so interesting to hear all the stories too! Where to next, I wonder?!
Glad you enjoyed it John, thanks for watching. Stay tuned, as they say 👍😀

A lovely reminder of a pre-covid visit we made to trace family links to free-mining. Thank you Patrick. It was a nice touch to reference your old film making buddies too.

What a great video. Thanks for sharing Patrick. Its my birthday today and theres a storm going on outside so a lovely quiet interlude for me.
Happy birthday! Hope you've had a lovely day. Many thanks for watching 👍
I’ve watch most, if not all of your films (some many more times than the once), and just wanted to say that it is always fascinating when you return to places you’ve been before many years on. The signature tunes that reference back to the previous visits are always a nice touch. You deserve to be proud of your body of work!
Thank you so much for your lovely comments and for watching. I am very proud of what I've done over the years, without wishing to blow my own trumpet so to speak 😂 Glad you've noticed and enjoyed the subtle references I've made with the music to the much earlier films. Many thanks again and all the best 👍
Thank you for taking the time to document the Forest of deans villages and towns. Fantastic stuff

I've really enjoyed all the Forest of Dean walks, its a part of the country I don't know at all. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching, glad you've been enjoying them 👍
Some lovely woodland walks in this area, Patrick. Viney Hill looks a very nice little hamlet complete with the lovely church which was great for you to have a look in. Yorkley is another pleasant place along your route, and you were lucky to find the old track which had overgrown, but rewarded with the fine views later. Danby Lodge is a lovely looking building along the way. The Blackpool Bridge of the old railway is in splendid condition after a long closure. A great video, Patrick, to wind up your week in this grand area. Many thanks, and looking forward to your next walks.
Thanks as always for watching and commenting Ffranc. This was a good walk to film during my last day of staying in the area back in May, but I returned for a few days in June to film more walks, so the first of those will be published a week on Friday. All the best 👍
Looking forward To those Patrick
Thanks for another interesting walk Patrick ❤
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching 👍
What a lovely little woodland walk and the church was really unusual.
Thanks Steve, glad you liked the walk 👍
It sounds as though you had a good few days of walking Patrick 😊 glad the weather was kind too! Have enjoyed this so thankyou for taking us along, looking forward to what is next! Have a good weekend 😊
It was a lovely week Steph, although it seems a long way gone now 😁 Thanks as always for watching and commenting. Have a great weekend too 👍
Well Patrick Forest of dean is a place to see hope you had a good stay and what we have seen looks very interesting lovely part of the world, the walks you have taken us all on and the churches have been amazing ! 👍
It was indeed a great week thanks Russ, although seems ages ago now! 👍😂 Glad you have enjoyed the walks and hope your stay in Bakewell was good 👍
@@solitaryrambler We had a great week Patrick thank you apart from the rain ha !
Interesting seeing different areas such as Wenchford on your walk and glad you liked your holiday/accommodations too. Some pleasant woodlands. The intro xylophone melody have heard before somewhere. But again really liked the relaxed guitar riffs and synths to track. Thanks Patrick. All best.
Morning Shanita, that was a nice flat in which I stayed for this week and suited my purposes. The xylophone solo was my Forest of Dean theme again, glad you liked the guitar riffs too. Thanks for all your lovely comments Shanita and for watching. All the best to you 👍
Another good walk Patrick. It does irk me somewhat, that there isn't a requirement to preserve clear vistas from hill tops when tree planting schemes are approved. Especially given that most are funded from the public purse.
Glad you enjoyed it, many thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Lovely walk..such a pretty church at the start…I remember my Gran mentioning the Roman Road I Lancs…must ah e gone a long way
It's a lovely church isn't it. I think this Roman Road only went a few miles across the Forest of Dean. Thanks for watching 👍
Hi Patrick. Great film. As previously promised after viewing your films from Sept 2023, I’ve just booked a week in Teesdale over the coming festive period….
Thanks for that Paul. You'll love the North Pennines 👍😀
Everything is so lushly green, and paths are shaded. Another perfect place to walk, and remiscence the good old days. ❤️
It was good indeed to reminisce. Glad you enjoyed the walk, thanks for watching 👍
Thanks, I've enjoyed this series of walks in my part of the UK. Some being familiar walks I've done with friends in past years others less so.
Glad you enjoyed it, many thanks for watching 👍
Well that's been a good week for you Patrick. I hope your next trip there is a good one too.
It seems ages ago now, but it was a great week thanks Michael. Thanks as always for watching 👍
Hello Patrick , great video I know that area very well , when I come home with people from Canada I always take them to see the Roman road , I seem to remember it been kept up a little better back in the day . I also remember seeing some very old crucibles for smelting near some of the streams , there was one lovely stream lined with stone work but I cant remember the place . Thank you Patrick.
Morning Shaun, thanks for your great comments and for watching. I don't know where the old crucibles you mention might be, but the Roman Road was quite overgrown on this occasion. All the best 👍
Aw, really enjoy watching your adventure. I've been there so many times . back in the 90s, my dad used to take me and my siblings all the time .
Many thanks Natalie, glad you enjoyed it. It's a great area as you know 👍😀
@solitaryrambler definitely . you have given me a few more ideas for some walks 😁
A good day for walking. Short sleeved shirt on. Surroundings lush and green. Weather is starting to turn now.
It was a good day when I filmed this. Thanks for watching 👍
Patrick this really has been a nostalgic trip and really quite homesick too. I welled up when you went into Viney HIll church as many of my kith and kin are buried there, I've also done the walk into Yorkley many many times. If you ever get back to the Forest in the future then do try and visit Aylburton, the Church of St Mary, opposite the Cof E school is just beautiful. Thank you so much for your video's , they bring so much joy.
Thank you so much for all your lovely comments. Pleased you enjoyed this and that it brought back good memories for you. I did return to the Forest for a few days during the following month as mentioned at the end of this film, so the first of those will be posted a week on Friday. Many thanks again for your comments and for taknig the time to watch. All the best👍
Two nights in a pub, I bet you had a ball. You have been extremely lucky of late with your churches being open. I recall a spate of them being closed. That being said, I've probably jinxed it now. That took you back to your original filming days with the old gang of Whovians. Happy times. You can see the greenery coming into full colour on this one. It was just ready for summer after all that rain. It looks like you had an enjoyable six days there and thanks for bringing us along because I know it's tiring work. Cheers Patrick
I did indeed Kelly, all of which will be revealed in a film that will be published in October. I'm still getting days where all the churches I visit are either open or closed, so it's the luck of the draw on the day really. Yes I wanted to specifically refer back to when my old Whovian mates were in a film with me over 20 years earlier, so it was great to find that one spot near Yorkley which looks totally different now. The six days I had here in May were great, as were the few days in June, so films from that month will be on their way soon. Thanks as always Kelly for watching and commenting. All the best 👍
Enjoyed this immensely, you were within spitting distance of a recently built headgear for a Freemine easily viewable from the path. Just hang a right at the carpark next to Danby lodge and follow the path in the woods with the little wall next to it and you cant miss it
Glad you enjoyed it, many thanks for your great comments and for taking the time to watch! 👍😀
That was great Patrick...i am guessing you must have clocked up several miles over the last week.
Thanks Steve. Yes I certainly clocked up a few miles during this week back in May. All the best 👍
Only a guess, Patrick, but the Jesus Rock may be so-called because it in three sections, suggesting the Trinity of God, the Son (Jesus) and The Holy Ghost.
You're probably correct Nick, I couldn't find any information about it. Many thanks 👍
