Mig 21Bis(Bison) was inducted in IAF IN Nov 1975 Only.The first Squadron was No 21 Sqn, at No 2 wing AF station Pune.This Squadron functioned as a training Squadron. I was one of the ground technicians.(Radio Fit /WOM 1) I took discharge in 1985, after 20 years(total) of service

Served us well good enough .... Fyi , those questioning its service records, should answer this .... We made and used close to 800 +units for close 60-70 yrs , considering each aircarft did less than 100 hours of flying time per yr the ratio between the sortie rate and airframe lost ( close to 400+ ) , is close to six sigma .... RIP for those brave souls who didn't make it back ....

The MiG 21's other Indian name of a widow maker is not shared by any other country which operates it. It does injustice to the MiG 21. It is a consequence first of all, of shoddy maintenance with poor quality parts and poor training of the pilots especially during initial training where there was a lack of suitable trainers for decades.
I remember on one occasion the control tower ordered two planes to land & take off the same runway at the same time, resulting in a loss of two aircraft, thankfully no lives lost.
Now that India has appropriate trainer airplanes , it is not surprising that there have been no crashes with the Tejas for more than 12 years now.
_Hindustan Aeronautics Limited HAL Bangalore's defective up-gradation program in 2000 made this jet 'flying coffin' If IAF had accepted Israel's MIG2000 upgradation program, many lives could have been saved._

at that time IAF should have chose French Mirage-3 or 5 instead of Russian MIG-21

@@MarkyIsNow no doubt LCA Tejas is good for now as it have american ge404 jet engines, but IAF should have been chosen mirage series jets at that time in 1960's, because many mirage 3,5 & their variants are still in use with very low, almost none crash rates due to technical issues.

We already had other Mig variants such as,Mig 21 FL.The ground equipments are almost same for this two a/c s.Moreover we had experienced techies in Mig.
I was trained in Mig 21FL As such I was selected to work on Mig 21 Bis (3 months training).
I worked on Mig 21 Bis for 10 years (1975 to 1985)
