Great comment. Febus is such an idiotic character that I've got no words to describe. He is so shallow. Both in musical and book. It's real disappointment, though maybe in original, French book it looks better and it's just a matter of translation... Still, I'm kinda sad that Victor Hugo did it. Esmeralda was shallow and naive as well, I know that most of the characters were supposed to be haunted by their desires but God, how could he did it to Esmeralda, she turned out so idiotic, and Febus, he could be something more than typical soldier, he isn't even shown that much in a book.
+Sabat Ei Sekhmet Nope, Phoebus is still an idiotic asshole in French. The whole concept of Phoebus is to be a prick. He has to marry FleurdeLys, but he doesnt love her, and is only dictated by his sexual desires, so he cheats on her with Esmeralda, who symbolizes beauty and innocence. Hes not really a typical soldier. He mostly represents arrogant attractive men who never suffered, and see women as objects. - via YTPak(.com)
Sabat Ei The whole point of all the characters being flawed(even Quasimodo, in this sense) and having gruesome(or in Phoebus’s case, ironic) fates is to capitalize on the central idea about the REAL main character of the story, Notre Dame(the actual cathedral) herself. Aside from being an expose of the barbarism of humanity(all in an intentionally misanthropic, and even sarcastic, tone), the book’s actual main theme is about the fading importance of the power of architecture as the first form of art, literature, language, and communicating dogmatic ideals of the church, in a pre printing press world. During Victor Hugo’s time, Notre Dame had been very weathered down and damaged from centuries of human misconduct since it was first built. Regardless, it’s an architectural marvel of a building(being on of the first ever structures to incorporate flying buttresses) that Hugo fell in love with, upon independently studying it’s structural details and history. When he heard that the building was rumored to being torn down, Hugo wrote the book to raise awareness of the building and draw public interest towards this fascinatingly built church. He of course succeeded, and impressively so, at a time before the concept of historical preservation was even a thing! That’s why much of the book is spent on talking about the structure of Notre Dame, as well as discussing the importance of architecture during medieval times. It’s also why, at one point in the story, Frollo utters the line “this will kill that, the book will kill the edifice(building)”, and then a few chapters later the book goes into a detailed discussion about that line. The entire character plots of the story, while mainly well written, are essentially made by Hugo to attract readers, and are basically background noise to Hugo’s main point about “the book will kill the edifice” and of how Notre Dame managed to stay standing with the passage of time. None of the characters made that much of an impact on the world(be it in their favor), and their lives don’t really matter, because Notre Dame is the soul survivor of these times, and the one that ultimately harbors humanity’s flaws as a whole. All of this, of course, is ALSO why Hugo was notoriously pissed off when American translators changed the title of the English printed story from “Notre Dame De Paris” to “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, because this story is NOT about Quasimodo, or Esmeralda, or Frollo, or ANY specific character but Notre Dame herself(duh). So yeah, this book is WAY different in tone from Hugo’s latter work Les Misérables, which obviously DOES value humanity in the face of the then present problems of France’s legal system. Here’s a video by Lindsay Ellis who talks more about the history of Notre Dame, the several adaptations of the story(including an opera with a libretto by Victor Hugo himself) to film, and all to discuss the ramifications of that Disney film! m.ruclips.net/video/AIIWy3TZ1eI/видео.html
