At first I was like "eewww are those worm" (For my defense at first they looked like worm at first) and I went "Aww that's wholesome, nature really does waste nothing "
Today I learned: the slice is the food for the seeds as it molds. Interesting! (Addendum: and the responses faithfully filled in what I wasn’t aware of during the process.)
not always in potted plants, their soil is really great because its full of springtails, which eat mold! but potting mixes (at least not common ones) dont have any living organisms so you have to add them yourself. Originally fruits and other softer plants were put in the ground whole like yhis to grow a new plant but the key is that they were put in the ground, where helpful bugs could eat away the rotting food and return it to the soil.
@@Octilious11934 I didn’t say it never, I’m saying seeds don’t need the fruit or th e mold in order to grow plants grow straight from the seed which as all the energy they need to sprout
It works better if you make cut the tomato in half, scoop out a small bit of soil, to set the tomato skin side down. Gently cover the now exposed cut edge where you can see the seeds with 1/4" of soil. I sprouts faster. Because there is plenty of tomato flesh where the seeds are embedded. The seeds and sprouts will continue and grow by feeding on the nutrients in the tomato.
Problem is, unless the tomato is completely ripe at harvest, the seeds will not grow that far. So, this may not necessarily work on a tomato from your local Walmart.
It would be a good illustration to show people that the deeper you burry seeds, the lower your chance they will come up above the ground. Only 3 made it, the rest of the seeds ran out of energy. Without sunlight, they can only rely on the energy inside the seed. Which is why big seeds like beans and peas can be burried deeper in the ground, or under a thicker layer of mulch. While tiny seeds like basil or beebalm have to be sown on the soil itself, just pressed down.
This is wonderful - Mother Earth at work. When they’re first coming up and the first two leaves open up, they look like baby birds, even with unsteady neck muscles. What really surprised was that the tomato became mold and the seedlings still thrived. I’ve grown seeds this way bfor kids in kindergarten, but there was no mold. Thanks much. Loved this. :) 🍅🌱
Thats how Ive been saving my tomato seeds for years. You slice them thin, cover the top of a pot with dirt in it, stire in cool dark area till ready for seed starting. Pull it out and water and give light and warmth like you would for your seed starts.
Yeah, i've got sad because of it. He really would have to place the tomato slice on top and flat. I am sorry for the little ones that didn't come out 😢

Sad fact but most of the groceries tomatoes are made to provide beautiful fruits just once. Next generation is weaker and smaller so you have to buy seeds every time. I’ve tried planting tomatoes from regular fruit once and they looked like cherry tomatoes.
Now I feel that buying tomato seeds to plant is a scam, when I can just real tomatoes LOL
I haven't done it with tomatoes, but I've had good success with store bought peppers.
Some fruits are intentionally grown to be impossible to seed yourself genetically. can't do this with everything
Scarier: i have heard rumors not to bother trying this with store bought fruits and vegetables because they have been genetically modified with seeds specifically made to NOT grow future plants, but i cant prove it. Could be a rumor.

@@sirsassy7353 eso y que el moho puede causar problemas para que las semillas se desarrollen bien
@@sirsassy7353no it molds and decompose to become like a fertilizer
not always in potted plants, their soil is really great because its full of springtails, which eat mold! but potting mixes (at least not common ones) dont have any living organisms so you have to add them yourself.
The top sprout looks so triumphant!
The way how you could see the slight outline of the tomato skin at the end is crazy
You wrote it that way so I feel bad for tiny seeds that can't make it 😭
