  • Super excited about the massive harvest i got from this one, totally worth 3 months :)
At 0:49 you can see when the fungus gnat larvae are starting to munch on everything that's underground. Probably ate some tiny potatoes as well in the process.
if i knew i would have waited a few more weeks so the potatoes would have been a bit bigger. But it didn't look like it was going to produce flowers or anything so i decided to dig it up.

As a professional farmer that specifically loves to grow potatoes, the potatoes aren't ready to come up until the entire plant has died. Also, the production of potatoes is completely independent of the flowers/seeds. Potatoes themselves aren't in fact seeds, they're tubers, they propagate themselves from root.

@@planterpot4627 So, I agree that the plant may not have ever been produced because of the pest problem. That being said potatoes don't need to have flowers to make tubers, and the plant isn't ready to be pulled until the tops die. I believe you know most of that just clarifying for anyone else who may see the comments and not know.

We found this out; the foilage must die before you dig them. The first year we planted potatoes, we only had tiny potatoes because we dug them while the foilage was green. The next year we waited until the foilage almost completely died back before digging and we had a very good harvest. Patience is key.

If you do potatoes again remove all eyes but one to get bigger (but not as many) potatoes(keep all eyes on for LOTS of tiny potatoes).
For good potato growing use lots of compost, don't overload with any nitrogen fertilizer(gives lots of leaves), your plant threw A LOT of its energy into leaf production and did nothing for the roots.
Use a phosphorus rich fertilizer (for root growth) and potassium (for overall plant health).
Even if you don't fertilize with anything top it with compost every couple weeks and it'll do great! Mainly just use lots of compost ^_^
PLZ try potato again, would love to see if this helps!

While this is true it's not always advisable (from a dorky gardening standpoint) because many of the varieties we find in the grocery store are not true-to-seed, and are hybrid varieties that require two separate parents to produce the fruit you have in your hand. So by growing those seeds you're playing the genetic lottery and the chances of it being exactly like what you bought from the store are slim to none

i had planted potatoes for the very first time this year a month or two or so ago, may be more maybe less, but masha allah did i get a good harvest for the very first try. as a child i couldnt hold my excitement and so i dug them out, today in fact, and have some big ones about 10cm more or less. it was in a tiny pot so i reckon that may be why there were many small ones and another reason may be because i either waited too early or too late. i have two pots in which i planted potatoes in. they were i rekon maybe a week apart but i soon started to notice changes even though they were in the same area. the first one which had beautiful leaves had started to thrive and then later die whilst the newer one was just thriving. i then noticed a new sprout after the last remaining 'elders' of the previous generation of leaves and plants died in the first one and now today i dug them out. I was pretty suprised and it exceeded my moms expectations which was good news since she had experience in gardening whilst i didnt. i still havent taken the newer or the second pot and dumped it as its plants were still thriving like before and still are. i have planned to dig them out at the end of this month to give it more time. however i can already see some areas where you can see exposed potaoes and they look quite big, maybe even more than 10cm but idk what i should do with them exposed. wish me a good harvest and to those skilled potato planters please give me advice on what i should do to the exposed potatoes or at least just their heads.

I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days, nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days. Yea, I make a record in the language of my father, which consists of the learning of the Jews and the language of the Egyptians.
And I know that the record which I make is true; and I make it with mine own hand; and I make it according to my knowledge". 1 Nephi 1-3
Hello friends, I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The verses above are the first three verses in The Book of Mormon. I know this probably isn't the most ideal place to talk about religion but I really do want you to know that God loves you. You may not love Him or care about Him at all, but He still will continue to love you. You are a beloved son or daughter of God. He knows you personally and He truly and deeply desires for your happiness. He loves everyone who has every lived on this earth, with a perfect equal love regardless of their race, gender, ethnicity, faith and values and beliefs. The Lord loves you more than you can think or comprehend. "He inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile" 2 Nephi. He is our loving, caring Heavenly Father. We are literally His children and creations. When we were in the womb, he knew about us" Jerimiah 4:5. He knitted us and we were created in His image.
I testify to you that you and I are not a mistake. He knows the very moment when we stand and when we sit. He is familiar with all our ways and knows us personally who we are. The hairs on our very head are numbered. God loved us so much, He sent His Only Begotten Son for us, that we may be able to return and dwell in the presence of God again. The Lord has not forgotten about us even when it feels like He has. He will never forsake us. When we are happy, He and His angels rejoice alongside us. When we are sad, He heals us and lifts us up from our trials. He has always been there for us. He has always been our loving, compassionate Heavenly Father and God. Will we always be His children and people?
I testify to you that God lives and that Jesus is the Christ. Both love you exceedingly and rejoice when you are happy. They both love you so much. They love you with a love unfeigned. They will never ever stop doing good unto you. I know that The Book of Mormon is true. In 90 days I got lot of medium sized potatoes even without fertilizers, no pesticide but regular irrigation. The thing is, I cut the sprouted potatoes in which every piece had an eye and placed them each at one feet apart. Most of them became plants and we got a sack full of potatoes with a land size that of a small bedroom say 10 by 12 feet. Had I waited more, I could have gotten 50% more yield. Moreover rats stole 20% of my potatoes.

3 months should be enough for most potatoes to produce a decent harvest, but some can take longer. I have no idea what type of potato this was i just found it sprouted in my fridge. But as you can see at 0:49 a lot of the plant gets eaten up by fungus gnat larvae. That probably had some impact on the harvest.

@@toysforeva Do you make sure to "till" the dirt or fluff the dirt enough before putting your plants in the ground? The goal is to get all the hard topsoil 1-1.5 foot deep down and then break that soul up till it's fluffy. You can do it with a shovel and hoe if that's all you have. This is crucial for the new plant throughout the beginning stage of growth. Till the topsoil, put plant in the ground, water, fertilize. Don't give up, do research and tips/tricks and you will quickly learn. One of the best ways is to go to the local greenhouse and ask the local people for tips. Tomatoes can be a real PITA to grow.

I have some success, for example when I didn't have a yard, I managed to regrow a pineapple from a top, that I bought in the store - in a pot!!! I remember coming from work and cutting it one beautiful evening. It was much smaller than the store one. But it was so warm from sunset rays, and so sweet, like honey, that I will remember this pineapple till I my last day. It was incredible. I don't know how I did that, I could never repeat my success 😁
Last year I had a watermelon volunteer plant. I dig my veggie scraps directly into the soil, I don't want to have a compost spot, so I just go around the backyard and pick a spot, and bury it there. Last year I had a watermelon that actually produced a fruit of 4 lb approximately. But it was 0 effort from me. It grew from a compost bury spot so to say, haha

"And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost". Each eye on the potato is a separate plant and the potato itself is the nourishment (sugars) it needs to get started. Use a proper potato feed that is balanced to match its growth pattern, NPK, as too much of one offsets the others. Plenty of watering, and not too much heat, as heat will stop tuber production and growth, this is important if you grow in bags and pots, keep the base cool and reflect direct sunlight, plastic pots heat up too quickly, the soil dries out, and when you water the water runs down the sides and out the bottom. Use grass clippings on top of the soil to keep in moisture and add pelleted potato feed during the growing season to ensure good tuber size and abundance. You should expect 1-2kg /potato sown. I usually add tomato liquid feed when watering as with tomatoes this benefits the tuber with high potassium, by this stage you don't need Nitrogen, which is only for leaves, so avoid chicken pellets and high nitrogen fertilizers. Stick you fore finger into the soil all the way down, if dry then give a good watering, especially if the weather is hot.

Did not understand your second sentence. Use NPK or not?

    • @hughjones1460

You change the ratio of the fertilizer, increasing the potassium and decreasing nitrogen, as the fruits develop and less upper leaf growth is required. Fertilizers high in nitrogen will promote lots of green leafy, whereas all fruits, potatoes, tomatoes, strawberries and so on require higher doses of potassium, such as in tomato feed, the ratio of NPK changes as the plants grows and develops.

@@hughjones1460 I see what you mean now. For me, the term "NPK" stands for standard fertilizer bags with NPK fertilizer, where I cannot adjust each one individually.
You meant it as an abbreviation for each single component.

@@whuzzzup If you buy chicken pellets they contain mostly Nitrogen based compounds which are great and beneficial for green leafy vegetables, salads leaves and all plants just starting out in life putting on leaves. Once they are in the fruiting stage, ie, tomato production, potatoes when flowering, I switch to a store bought tomato liquid fertilizer, as it contains a higher value of potassium and less nitrogen, potassium aids the plant in developing its fruits as the leafy stage is no longer required for growth. This applies to flowers too as they are meant to attract pollinators in order to fruit. It's all part of the plants life cycle, as they like us we develop at different stages, and the nutrients required as we age change, so higher dozes of potassium are more beneficial. NPK values reflect the ratios, but for me its much simpler to know which substance I'm buying is beneficial at that stage of the plants life cycle. So when my tomatoes are now producing green tomato, I know to start using a tomato liquid fertilizer, which incidentally I also use on my potatos when they start flowering.

My dad planted a sack of seed potatoes, carefully cared for the growing crop all summer long and then got a harvest of half a sack. He never did it again.

What a shame, I was going to share this video but then saw the massive deception at the end. Three tiny potatoes? You really think people are going to fall for that? How about making a 'Part 2' video showing you sifting through the soil and harvesting the +/- 50 other potatoes? I'm just eating my dinner at the moment and the biggest ingredient was potato, harvested from my garden. One large bag has produced about 100 potatoes. From five chunks of potato I got 100 potatoes that taste fantastic! Don't be deterred from growing your own vegetables and becoming self-sufficient.

I’ e grown potatoes. They need lots of sunlight, loose soil, and there needs to be some chits … the sprouts that start growing out the potatoes. You cut a portion of potato the surrounds a chit, let the flesh dry overnight, then plant each piece with about 3-4” soil below & above,?3-4 inches apart. When 2nd set of leaves appear above the soil, add soil to reach the bottom of leaf stem. Repeat 3-4 times. Keep soil moist and make sure there is plenty of sun.
