- It's Adam Koralik here and today we're discussing the MemCard Pro. This is the ultimate memory card for the PlayStation 1. It uses micro SD cards to give you infinite storage. It has Wi-Fi capabilities for updates and more, and has many enhancements for those using certain PS1 ODEs. It is also compatible with the fat PS2, but only for PS1 games.

Update, they added a big new firmware update today (April 25th) with a bunch of new features. Check 8BitMods website or my Twitter for details.
Neat!
Now, we need one for PS2 and PS life will be complete
youtube sucks! i am a subscriber, and i didnt see this video until 6 days after upload...wtf..FIGURE IT OUT! lmao
Now try this with metal gear solid. Blow psycho mantis's mind.
Lol I hope he actually does to see what happens. What games would he pick? Would it differ every time?
@@Wally17. I think he detects only Konami games.
@@teoperoxd he only detects Konami games
Back in the day (1998-2002) I went through EIGHT memory cards, the last of which was one of those funky double-sized card with a little button to switch between cards. All of them still have the original saves after over TWENTY YEARS OF USE. Which is testimony to the longevity and durability of PlayStation memory cards. Nice to know I can back them up to SD card.
When you had to explain to the younger dudes what a memory card was... I realized i was old.
You get used to it.
I can't wait for someone to do something like this for the GameCube and Dreamcast.
I wouId Iove a dreamcast VMU simiIar to this
On Gamecube, you can do this with Swiss and the SD2SP board. It will let you create multiple virtual memory cards on an SD card, divided by region (since the GC's memory cards have their odd region issues)
Dreamcast would be nice though , the official VMU holds next to nothing
@@ChrisDoesTV yes a VMU would be AWESOME! The downloadable VMU games take up an entire card by themselves and then burn thru watch batteries like a fat kid in a candy store! Also you could copy those VMU games and (like pocket GT) and basically give yourself unlimited in game money
@@lightdark28 I had no idea that was a thing! I know what I'm gonna mess with this afternoon!
I have 6 memory cards on the GameCube just for Pokémon.
You know, retro gaming communities are probably the best part of gaming. And I’m seriously loving all of these mods that are coming out recently.
Agreed.
Because we are passionate hobbyists, not just consuming a game a a piece of entertainment and then forgetting it. With videos games truely in the mainstream, like every other type of media, we have become more like cinenphiles buy woth video games instead.
Pepperidge Farm remembers not having enough space on a PS1 memory cards.
I hope they can make a PS2 version someday.
Honestly- with hd loader, it has built in virtual memory cards already. Trust me, I wish so too (and would gladly buy it in a heartbeat) but even if someone never does make one, at least we have that and it works
@@nunyabusiness69 Also, ps2 cards are stupidly cheap on aliexpress. And they work great.
@@nunyabusiness69 if your like me and playing PS2 on a PS2 Slim 7000 then HD Loader isn't even an option. But if they make a microSD to PS2 memory card adapter... oh my god
128MB+ memory cards kinda reduce the need for it though.
@@asdfpoop33921 yeah but those type of cards tend to fail easily
Just left an Adam Koralik video to watch this other Adam Koralik video🤟🏽
I did too lol
When I got my PlayStation 1 in 1997 packed with Tekken 2 I got home, unlocked prototype Jack then I got called down for dinner. I went to turn it off and realised I’d lose everything! I had no memory card... I thought about leaving it on until the next day but thank god I didn’t 😂
I was in a similar situation. I had an N64 and then got a PS1, do I didn't know what a memory card was for. I got Wild Arms and borrowed Wing Commander III from a friend. Tried to beat both of them without saving. I made it pretty far in Wing Commander but quickly decided I needed to buy a memory card lol
Reminds me of the 10 memory cards i needed for dragon ball final bout lmao
Always joy to see your videos, Adam. Keep up the fine work.
great viewing once again adam.
waiting for the PS2 version of this lol
Thank you for constantly spitting knowledge about all these retro consoles Adam 💪💪💪
Great video! Really enjoy it. That was funny when you mentioned the PS3 memory card USB adapter Sony made, because I have one c.i.b. I found it years ago at a local yard sale, and it was just sitting on a tarp on a person's lawn. It was still in it's box, and it caught my eye. So I went over to it, bent down and picked it up. I read what it was, and immediately was like "I gotta buy this". I think I paid $5 for it. I still have it too to this day.
Got mine ordered a while back... should be on the way soon!
I loved those PSM memory card and lid stickers!
GameCube needs one of these since The Sims Bustin Out needs 20 memory cards all on it's own
Mine comes tomarrow straight from 8 bit mods ! I’m excited . My setup is with the xtstation and the ps1 digital . I got the exact same color as you as well ! Also as always , love your videos man !
Would love to see versions of this for PS2, Dreamcast, and N64
The PS2 version is up now for pre order. I just order mines. The PS2 version now works with both the PS2 and the PS1 games.
@@JuanDiaz-jo1rw yeah preordered mine from 8bitmods last week :)
Hi Adam totally agree with you about the Dreamcast needing a memory card like this - would be awesome.
retro gaming has became so innovating and its so cool waiting to see what will come next
Goddamn if you aren't one of my favorite channels. I always come away with some new information on the best hobby in existence.
Isn’t the PocketStation the ultimate one ?
Ha, no.
Wonder if they could make one with like Pocket Station functionality
Ok now i'm dreaming up a Super VMU for the Dreamcast
Yeah, it just needs an SD Card slot
Man, I love a MemCard Pro for the ps2 console. That would be a sweet deal!
I had no idea this exsisted till now, god bless the retro community
I backed up a bunch of my save files on my hard drive and my PS2. The only problem is when you want to play one of your games you got to make sure that file was on your memory card
This answered every question I had about the device.
I also realized I've been watching your content for AGES... but I've never subscribed?
Fixing that shit right now lol
I do agree a dreamcast vmu based on this would be amazing! may have to track down one of these it would at least make downloading saves (like the new one for dancing stage: disney's rave with the maniac steps unlocked, for example) much easier!
Downloading new saves to a Dreamcast can actually be fairly simple. Use DreamShell with one of those com port sd card readers.
Though yeah. Sticking a SD card directly into a VMU with an SD slot would of course be better.
The PS1 is my favorite console so this sounds great for me. Thanks for bringing it up.
I imagine they could do a hardware revision that adds a switch to change the memory card from the PS1 to PS2 so you could actully save PS2 games
Back in the early 2000s I had a version of this for the PS1 and I thought it was great as it saved like 10x more games. One day I booted up Dragon Warrior 7 and had over 120 hours into the game. I was promted that my memory card needed to be formatted.... I never to this day finished that game.
I have eight PS1 memory cards with saves on them, or I hope the saves are still on them. Great video Adam more people are looking into retro systems since they know current systems have a limited life left.
I received mine the other day! Cool addition to an ultimate ps1 set up... but an expensive nice to have.
Got mine yesterday!
Brings back old memories.
VMU will always be the best memory card, but Wifi on a Memory card is pretty rad.
definitely need one of these for a Dreamcast
Off the topic: I've just realized that I've been subscribed for more than 7 years now. Don't even want to continue on that train of thought.
That things is awesome. All I could see Wi-Fi being useful for on it is updating it's firmware and transferring save game data from it to a pc and vice versa.
You know what would be really awesome? The ability to load full games off the SD card. Essentially making the adapter not only a super-sized memory card, but a mod-free alternative to the MODE and other optical disc replacements.
I'm guessing that's not possible through the memory card.
Thats a dream come true, I hope they would do that.
The reason memory cards were so small at this time was due to how expensive flash memory was in the late 90s->Early 2000s. It's why SD cards in recent years have exploded in sizes where you can get an absurdly big one for something like 30 bucks. It's also why DS cartridges were only up to 512 mb in size and the PSP went with a mini disc format instead.
Thats the memory card mvg used to perform the new ps1 softmod!
PSIO will use the same game sd card as a virtual memory card, they tease a picture of the menu a few weeks ago.
I would get this for sure. I had a 3rd party one back in the day. It had 284 blocks on it but it dropped once and all the saves were gone. After that I stuck with Sony oem ones. But great video.
looks cool
Cool video tech talk lol
Funny, I ordered some original PSX memory cards. Lost mine somewhere.... and I want to get to use the old first model PSX again, yes that one with the RCA leads! Good times!
What I’ve done for years is use an internal HDD on a phat PS2 and copy my memory card saves to the HDD and then copy them back to the memory card when I want to play them again. Works for PS1 and PS2 games.
Sounds like the same problem we have nowadays, but with games.
@@HunterAtheist pretty much
Two Day going to figure it out The memory card on the PS1 New memory card
id love to see them do a proper 1/4mb cart for the saturn
I Wish someone would test the psio with this
The comments on Adam’s consist of I like turtles, Adam rules Dreamcast, comments about the actual video, and then a bunch of bullshit. It’s great!!!
Ever heard of Brook's wireless converter for the PS2? It lets you use Switch Pro/Xbox One/PS3/PS4/PS5 controllers with the PS2. Works like a charm.
"Switch Pro/Xbox One/PS3/PS4 to PS Classic/PS2 Super Converter."
Those memory cards look awesome. I thought about getting another GC memory card so I can play more GameCube games since the memory card is full.
This is insane duuude. Thanks for sharing. Imma keep watching.. keen to find out if compatible with PS2.. assume will work just same as ps1 mem cards do 🤟 ahhh ive got a ps2 slim. Typical 🤯🤣
Very interesting device 😀 my process is play ps1 games on ps3, take the ps1 save data & save it to a USB stick inserted in the ps3. If I'm using an original physical memory card ps1 or 2, I take my PS3 memory card reader & insert the memory card & save the data to the USB sticks via the reader. Then format the card for infinite uses. Again, very interesting device. Thanks for sharing Adam 👍
Also you can use the PS3 dongle you will need the normal memory cards to load and transfer saves onto it.
Watching this in VR right now. Technology is pretty neat, just like turtles!
This is pretty cool...
Man a good dreamcast memory card like that would be awesome. I'd kill for one lol
I do not see myself getting an ODE for my PlayStation, but I DEFINITELY WILL get a MemCard Pro!
Pretty cool device! Also, regarding the CMOS battery issue, Metal Jesus Rocks said in a recent video he did that Sony is APPARENTLY looking into the issue, but he didn't give a source backing up his claim. So, hopefully a solution is in the works.
Jason is referring to the post from Does It Play which is a screenshot from PlayStation customer service.
Take it with a grain of salt.
@@AdamKoralik Yeah, I'm on the same boat. I'm not holding my breath until Sony releases a statement on the matter. Though given the fans speaking up about PSN and convincing Sony to change their minds, it may just be a matter of time.
About time someone did this, I was loooking for a modern solution few months ago didn't found one, thought it was only logical. But the price + shipping. OOOh boy. I can get half a dozen OG 128KB ones for dirty cheap in Brazil, unfortunately cost/benefit doesn't work for me. Already burnt some cash on a niche Retrotink2x Pro-M after the dolar ratio went from 1:3BRL to 1:5.5BRL last year. Even with the extra little steps it's still a very elegant solution, though.
Good to see we have a good option for using SD Cards as PS1 MEM Cards now. Hopefully this device continues to develop and mature into a solid option for both PS1 AND PS2.
Ans yes, the Dreamcast would be awesome with this type of device.
I wonder if the card creating 8 virtual cards has something to do with the limitations of FAT-32 on drives larger than 4GB? Maybe those cards are actually partitions that a FAT-32 file system can manage. It would be cool if you could load up a FTP program like FileZilla to explore the tree or just read the SD card.
Damn, i hope it works for the slim ps2 maybe someday
I remember getting a ps1 memory card when i was probably 14, it has i think 360 blocks on it. It is by a company called Performance. This was a life saver for my parents because they no longer had to buy me another ps1 memory card. But i do not completely trust it. It once wiped everything out and i was really pissed off at the time because i was like 18 hours into final fantasy 9. But luckily for my more important games i had backup saves on my other memory cards. But i did have to do a little bit of back tracking in that game.
PS1 games are definitely still great to play! Especially on RGB CRTs that we have in Europe.
That reminds me of a Joytech 60 blocks memory card I have
Adam, does this have potential as far as translation patches go for Japanese games? What do you think?
No idea, I'm not familiar with how that works.
Hey Adam, Diablo would give this a run for it's money. My casual sessions have eaten up 2 memory cards already! 😆 🤣 😂
Most PS1 games I would be content playing on emulator.
*however*
If this could easily transfer save files BACK-AND-FORTH between o.g. hardware & PC for emulation, I'd be down for it. This has the potential to be the thing that replaces memory card peripherals that connect to a PC via a serial port - no modern computers have those anymore _and no, USB-to-DB9 adapters don't work._ At least it's better than trying to hunt down the PlayStation Memory (FLOPPY!) Drive 💾
I could see myself using this for using my o.g. hardware for replay save files from _Parappa the Rapper_ & _Umjammer Lammy._ Either that or custom missions for _Tenchu 2_
I don't see a PS2 card happening at the moment due to MagicGate. Every Sony device from the PS2 onward that takes a memory card or SD card supports MagicGate.
From what I've read it was used to authenticate whether or not the card was genuine (made by Sony or a company licensed by Sony such as MadCatz). They apparently forced large game developers to verify that the card was genuine if it wasn't it would either refuse to save or create corrupted save files.
I'm no expert on it, but the memory card exploit is the key thing that opened up the PS2 hacking scene. So I'm guessing it was defeated.
GameCube version would also be nice!
Definitely. You can get the same effect for GC by booting games from USB/SD using WiiFlow though. That mem.card emulation feature creates a new 251 block card or so for each game. I never found a good way to import all
my old saves into that system though😭
Adam, does cos battery affect playing games offline even if the ps4 is not connected to the internet?
Well, yes. That's part of why it's a problem.
We need this for n64 Saturn dreamcast Ps2 and gamecube
Is there a way to take sd card and hook it up to a ps3 through USB adapter or such and copy your save to a virtual memory card in the ps3 to pick up playing on ps3 from ps1?
If you have a way to digitally transfer your PS1 saves from a PS3 to a PC, then maybe. I can't say I had that option.
Leaving a comment for the algorithm.
I've been on filf burn-spree thanks to UniROM.. so when I actually reach 16, 24 banks do they just read out like so 9-24 or always only up to eights?
WWF SmackDown! And SmackDown! 2 KYR...ah good times :)
Great memory card 👌
pfft....
back in MY day.. we backed up games on cassette tapes (before the advent of floppy disks!!)
I know this is not the place but can't find information about the XBOX series x games on discs. Now each game is sold as both xbox series x and xbox one versions on 1 disc. Which version is on the disc? If its the xbox one version on disc is the series x being downloaded?
I'm not 100% on this, but I think it's the Xbox One build and the enhancements come from update files. As of now the actual number of Xbox Series X specific discs is minimal.
He's alive! I was sold on this... Until you said I can't use PS2 cards with it. That it's solely for PS1.
I'll wait until they make one that does both PS1 and PS1 games
Did I die at some point?
@@AdamKoralik Lol. It feels like I haven't seen a video from you all year.
@@AntonioCunningham Ah, well you have a big back lot to keep you amused if you wish.
I’m so on the fence when it comes to this thing. I have a third party PS1 card with 50 banks (50 in 1 card) which works great. You can cycle through all of them using L+Select+Up/Down.
This should just allow you to do 99 or more imo (I feel different button combos to go up/down 10/100 banks would solve browsing up to at least 1000 banks)
And it should work with PS2 games and PS1 games through a PS2 HDD imo. I mean it’s FPGA. Being able to emulate different kinds of hardware is one of the very awesome aspects of FPGA stuff.
WiFi is exciting though. I hope FTP is coming :)
N64 and Dreamcast needs solutions like this *BAD* though
I don't know if it would be possible to support both PS1 and PS2 given how the PS2 blocked out PS1 cards from supporting PS2 saves.
@@AdamKoralik It’s FPGA. If designed the right way I’d be willing to bet you could have it switch cores between acting as a PS1 and PS2 card. Then again I’m no FPGA or PCB designer myself and I don’t know exactly what differentiates a PS1 and PS2 card on a technical/hardware level ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Can you download ps1 saves from online to the sd card and plug them into a ps console?
Yes, as I understand it that's part of their WiFi plans.
Yeah if they added color to the VMU that would be fucking amazing
One of my best childhood memories, is being like 13 or 14 and being at my younger cousins house playing Star Wars Phantom Menance (PS1) a bit before the actual movie came out. His mom was in the kitchen, and I told her we where going back to my cousins room to play Star Wars (kid friendly right?).
I then remember about 20 minutes later, his mother walking in because she heard screaming, to see in horror me and my cousin 5 inches from the tv screen as the sound blasted - giggling manically as our Jedi scum character methodically hunted down and murdered every innocent settler, jawa, droid and funny looking alien on the Tatooine level in a glorious bloody fit of laughter and violence. lol.
That game was FAR better than it ever deserved to be for a licensed game about a sh*tter movie. I sometimes think the games are the best part of what came out of that movies release (certainly better than the actual film).
I finally found a use for my 64mb sd card
You have a 64 mb micro SD card?
@@AdamKoralik yes
Now we just need people to make memory cards and dongles that let you run other systems or emulators. Imagine a memory card with a pi zero in it or something. Stupid but cool.
Anyone got this to work with filezilla? I got everything setup right but it wont work as i think its a port issue as idk what port to use but in the manual it shows the port as blank, anyone know?
I just got mine today... could I take my final fantasy 8 save from ps1 to a computer and then use that save file with an emulator? Do you have a video for doing that?
As far as I know you can, I've never tried that though.
@@AdamKoralik that would make a killer video bud. I use steamdeck while on the road and finding a way to cloud load my ps1 saves would be epic
Could they add a pocket station to one
With the PS3 you would need to copy them to a different card and then copy them over...
Only they could possibly answer that.
Looks cool.
SO it's just cycles thru 8 memery cards. then cycles another set of 8 memery cards.
Just something ill keep in my wishlist.
Ill prob not get it from stone age gamer. I ordered there 2 times and they seem to send me broken stuff. I repaired my gb x7 by krikkz. the saturn controller bumper broke.both modes work fine one had a dent where the usb is, i don't use usb anyways. But i bet i can bend it back. Ill order from someone else next time.
Weird, sorry that happened. :/
PS1/Saturn have VCD solutions right. Why not make an AVC CARD! That would be so awesome to use h264 instead of Mpeg-1. I'm having to use X-VCD 900kbps from VideoSolo Free Video Converter to achieve decent enough quality for 16:9 320x180 or 352x198 movies. Don't pick the VCD option, pick the Mpeg-1 option since that give 1.5x quality per bit even though it's the same codec. High bitrate TEMPGEnc will get you nowhere.
If we had one for the ps2, that would be the fucking tits
With the fpga would It Be able to boot ISO from its SD? One Man can only dream .....
No, that's already a thing though. I even showed them in this video.
Sir, I was playing Grandia PS1 last night on my PS3 slim and it said I could not create a save block lack of space. That was odd because I have 80GB free space and only 2 other PS1 games saved maybe 20 saves total. What do you think issue is? Do I need a memory card or USB stick? I did delete PS1 saves and will try later.
Did you create virtual memory cards on the PS3 first?
@@AdamKoralik I must have because I was able to save res evil 2 and 3.
@@AdamKoralik It works now, apparently I had too many saved PS1 game slots.
