    Having worked in the development of franchises of some of the most prominent companies in America, I must say the intent is commendable. The information is nonetheless inacurrate or outdated. For example, it cites that businesses that are independent fail about as often as franchised ones. NOTHING could be further from the truth! It has been proven statistics gathered beginning in the 60's that 7 out of 10 independents go out of business in the first five years whereas franchised operations have a succcess rate in the 90 percentile. The view or scope is limited. Virtually every industry in the world is franchised or it's sister, licensed. The The video cites a recurring payment to the franchisor of 5-10% when, in reality, the percentage can be all over the board and is often buried into the business activities in a way that is not reflected as a percentage of sales as this video intimates. Overall, pretty good and very informative in many ways.

      I agree with you John. Franchises and Brand Licensed Businesses have a higher success rate. I sell franchises for "Storks.com" and I would have embedded this video on our site if this huge inaccurate part wasn't there. Maybe they can re-research and revise this video so it can be more accurate.

    Thanks for posting this video. I would suggest any potential franchisee should think very carefully before signing up to a franchise with the smaller operations. They attract people in showing them one franchisee making an exceptionally good living but all the others struggling are hidden from view or blamed for their own poor performance. Then when the franchisor and franchisee inevitably fall out they are reminded they are locked into a 5 year agreement. If they do let you go early they force a Confidentiality agreement on you to keep you quiet to protect their franchise arm. I hope my post and experience prevents someone from losing their life savings.

    While some of the implications for workers can hold true in the fast food industry (i.e. unskilled labor), it doesn't stick for employees that have education and training related to the field. If you're a water damage technician with training you make great money ($20/hr nationwide - $42k/yr) and don't need a high school diploma. Add on additional certifications for mold damage or odor and smoke and you make much more.

    Being a 30 year franchise veteran, this video makes franchising seems far more "command and control" and "compliance" than reality. Also highly naive regarding pay scale. Experts ARE NOT fighting about the impact of franchising on the economy. It's positive. However, most franchisors are not unionized. Many small businesspeople see that as a good thing.

    • @ohmandamp
      @ohmandamp 7 лет назад +2

      Business owners see the lack of unions as a good thing the same way most tyrants see the lack of democratic reform movements as a good thing.

      to compare a small business owner who is trying to make a living with a tyrant at the very least is a miss and at the most is shockingly idiotic.

    • @curtisjohnson5347
      @curtisjohnson5347 7 лет назад +2

      Someone with common sense sees unions as what they're really for. (In modern day America, they're pointless organizations.) We already have laws that enforce safety, certain pay, etc.. What Unions claim to stand for. But, the reality is that the few take advantage of the many. In a Union, you typically have to PAY your union leaders. Even if you want no part of it. Even though the Union leaders have done literally anything to progress the movement they claim to stand for, you still have to pay in. While your cash flow dwindles, they're off vacationing in foreign Countries, distant resorts.
      Unions are garbage. End of story. (True, they USE to be helpful.) When we were at a time where we had no safety regulations. No sort of insurance. Completely shitty pay for an insane amount of hours. Well, we have laws to protect us from that now. What do we need Unions for ? And how are you going to compare a small business owner to a god damn Tyrant?!

      Jean Alexandre Not necessarily fam. You can really put yourself in a position to not have to work again, unless you want to. You have to know the market, want to do the work and a few other things.
      If the business is a hit and demand for the product is high, the ROI could be so much that you can hire an operations manager to run the day to days and you just handle logistics and reinvesting.
      Say you franchise a food truck or a Mobile grill. You now have what a brick and mortar business does not; The ability to physically go get your customers. Word of mouth, proper marketing (online and physical) and the ability to go wherever you want (within the law of course) will put you in a position to prosper. 🤔 Plus, there isn’t a single person on earth that doesn’t eat. Look into it man but whatever you do I hope you’re great at and it takes care of your family. Blessing 💪🏾

      The real impact on the economy are the massive number of SBA loans guaranteed for bad or deceptive franchises granted by banks whick get repaid by taxpayers when they default. Franchisees lose their homes, taxpayers pay the banks, franchise brokers cash thei commission checks and lie about 90% success rate.
