It's because the movie is almost presented as a neighborhood or workplace drama. With all these characters being a community of people that know each other in one way or another. Ironically, the only person not REALLY involved is Bruce as himself(but even then, he knows Falcone and was still a target of the riddler so🤷🏽).
This movie makes Gotham feel like a place I couldn't visit. Its so out of this world. The vibes feel so dirty and miserable. They nailed it on the head.
Have you really seen other Batman on film? This does not hold up to Michael Keaton Christian Bale or Ben Affleck. Val kilmer and George Clooney were more exciting.
@theunknowncommenter725 Have you even read comics? This is how Batman is supposed to be. This movie is the perfect mix of 3 of Batman's best storylines.
Right? I'm so gutted WB/Max decided to cancel Matt's Arkham series. That would've greatly expanded the rogues gallery. I guess Gunn and co. probably didn't want competition for when they introduce their Batman and villains.
This perfectly encapsulates what Bruce meant in that scene. Batman doesn’t necessarily have to be there- but the idea of him being enough to make bad guys think twice- perfection.
The idea he might be there is just as if not more scary to criminals than if he was. The light being something that lets them know "he's out there, RIGHT NOW" is so batman.
2:46 I knew then and there as the music swells and the fear is palpable on the screen that this was going to be my favorite batman movie of all time and it delivered.
Thursday, October 31st. The city streets are crowded for the holiday. Even with the rain. Hidden in the chaos is the element, waiting to strike like snakes. And I'm there too. Watching. 2 years of nights have turned me into a nocturnal animal. I must choose my targets carefully. It's a big city. I can't be everywhere. But they don't know where I am. We have a signal now, for when I'm needed. When that light hits the sky, it's not just a call - it's a warning. To them. Fear is a tool. They think I'm hiding in the shadows. But I AM the shadows. I wish I could say I'm making a difference, but I don't know. Murder, robberies, assault - 2 years later, they're all up. And now this. This city's eating itself. Maybe it can't be saved, but i have to try. PUSH MYSELF. These nights all roll together in a rush, Behind the mask. Sometimes in the morning i have to force myself to remember everything that happened.
Everything in this movie just screams “early Batman” and I love that. We rarely see him as Bruce, his gear is heavy and unrefined, the Batmobile is just a muscle car with added armor and a supped up engine
I liked how given Batman’s tenure was still in its infancy in this storyline, the city as a whole still isn’t sure what to think of him. He single handedly fights off muggers and victim’s only response is not “thank you”, it’s “please don’t hurt me.” Perfect visualization of his initial quest being one of revenge over justice.
It’s here. It’s finally here. Thursday, October 31st. The streets are crowded for the holiday…even with the rain. Hidden in the chaos, is the element…waiting to strike like snakes. But I’m there too, watching…waiting. 2 years of nights have turned me into a nocturnal animal. I must choose my targets carefully. It’s a big city…I can’t be everywhere. Hands down the best Batman film there has ever been. The Nolan films don’t come close to this level of atmosphere, nor do they actually do Batman as a character justice. Matt Reeves and Rob Patt just get it
I have watched this scene at least 50 times since the movie came out, and I JUST NOW REALIZED THAT BATMAN WAS WATCHING THEM IN THE SUBWAY CAR THE ENTIRE TIME. 1:58
yeah, feels like the same narrative path. the difference between the two of them is that the bat deep inside is a good person, actin fo good rorschach instead just thinks he’s on the right side but he a fascist
Does anyone visualize those comic book thought bubbles while watching this scene? Cause I do. Imo the best comic book to screen scene ever and it’s not even based on any specific Batman comic. But it’s made in such a way I can literally see it be from a graphic novel or something. It’s amazingly done.
I don't know if you all have seen the final episode of penguin but if you all look closely at the bat signal in the ending it looks more like a bat with the ears and not split in the middle
I love how atmospheric and eerie this opening was. There was so many depictions of him looking/feeling like a detective, noir spy and creeping vampire!
This is the best portrayal of Gotham and the effect of the Batman from a criminals point of view ever put to film. It even had me nervous and I’m law abiding!
@Slask7 yeah most of the movie is show, don't tell but this scene works because it gives a perspective into Bruce's mind. Without the narration you lose intensity
Robert Pattinson's performance + Something in the way + Matt Reeves' direction and Greg Fraiser's photography = excess of cinema 🚬🗿🖤 (I'm glad to see it in the cinema, it was worth it)
I love that the moment the criminals see the bat signal, they freeze and stare into the darkness, just too terrified to go towards it, until jerked away by some outside force and then they run away from it. just that scared that the signal means its their unlucky day, that if they step into the blackness, they wont be alone in there.
And notice how the director mr reeves shows us the macarbre of the fancy phones we have today ....the contrast between fool and the messiac vigilante perfectly examined .....

I love how Gotham feels so textured and alive in this film. It's as if the city is as much of a character as Batman is.
It's because the movie is almost presented as a neighborhood or workplace drama. With all these characters being a community of people that know each other in one way or another. Ironically, the only person not REALLY involved is Bruce as himself(but even then, he knows Falcone and was still a target of the riddler so🤷🏽).
