Stibbles is a successful Kickstarter campaign that we're working on completing, set to be fulfilled in around Sep/Oct. Honestly my hard sell tactic is a joke, and if you're a repeat viewer, I do apologize you are subjected to repeat mentions of the same thing. I just want everyone who would be interested to have the opportunity to hear about it.

See I actually made a tankard into a mimic. An adventurer went to drink and there was no beer left (i actually passed out solo cups to drink soda from and one had "uh-oh" written on the bottom, so it was random who this happened to). He got it refilled and watched the level of ale slowly go down. The party then fought an inebriated mimic that was used in an attempt to assassinate them.

His legs began to carry it to me, who tried desperatly to escape!
    Unsuccesfull.
His arms reached after my helpless body, pulled me into his endless hungering mouth.

My favorite mimic encounter was a room that was a mimic forming itself around an open area in a Dwarven ruin that was really the entrance to the mines but the mimic created a room attaching itself to the end of a corridor in order to trap the party then proceeded to root them in place while attempting to kill them. It resulted in an incredibly unique combat scenario where the objects in the room were like pseudo armor for the mimic that it shifted around to prevent the party from hitting it and defend itself and the party had to work around these objects from rooted positions while making saves or coming up with other ways to get unstuck to try and move around.

I am glad this video exists! I absolutely love mimics! 2 years ago, my friend was running a game, and in his world, he ran mimics wonderfully. They were intelligent natural creatures, and he made them much more common than usual. (He too loved mimics and sentient objects lol) Us adventurers were also aware of mimics (we asked if we would know if their existence, and he said "oh yeah, they're common enough") and how he explained them was "material that they eat, helps them grow, and they can take on that form". If they eat wood, metal, or living tissue, they break it down, and add it to their biology. They could also speak common. We wound up having a mimic ally. Very useful for interrogations lol.

One of a favorite race of mimics in fantasy are the Ols from Deltora Quest. They're essentially shapeshifters that come in three types: Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3. The first two are pretty similar. Both bear the mark of their creator, the Shadow Lord, somewhere on their body, but the length of time they can remain transformed varies, with Grade 1's having the shortest duration, and both are limited by the size their forms can take. Grade 3's can stay in whatever form they want, be it an average person or a tiny bird, or even a rock. Their bodies are devoid of the Shadow Lord's mark regardless of whether or not their transformed, and their intelligence is far greater than the first two Grades. One of the main characters actually turn out to be a Grade 3 at the end of the first series.
And as for the Ols true form, its essentially a ghastly blob with bottomless pits in place of eyes and a mouth. And they can only be killed by stabbing them through the heart, which is on the right side of their body

One of my favorite ideas for mimics is to make them pack hunters that try to trick people so they can be made vunerable.
For example: a colony of mimics creates the illusion of a fictional town. They pretend to be everything the party sees and will deform when not observed, rushing to wherever the party is going next. Every NPCs, Buildings, or anything else is a mimic. The goal is to wait for the adventurers to sleep in the inn and eat them in their sleep.
However the deception breaks down if the party splits up. There aren't enough mimics to pretend to be everything at once, so objects and buildings might just go missing. The rouge runs back into the tavern to grab his fanny pack he left and notices that all the cups and candles are missing: because they all ran off to be the buildings that the rest of the party is looking at.
Also having furniture that is mimics get "caught" is really fun. Small things are rearranged or out of place, either because the mimics don't have a perfect memory or get interrupted while moving around.
And how are mimic babies made? Well if course they need to be hatched! Mimic eggs look very similar to potions if healing...did I mention this chest had 6 healing potions?...Drink up.~

My sorta homebrew lore is that minics were oozes that wizards cursed with a specific form of the Polymorph spell that made them be able to take on the forms of objects. When the wizards and their magic passed, some became smart boys from what they observed, and when they divided like other oozes, the object transformation traits transferred in their minds as an instinct. They’re simple, but can learn given enough time, so observation can give new forms, and they can choose how much to split off. So you have situations like dungeons with a mimic colony making up bricks throughout it, working together to get more food by shifting the walls and such. Heck, there’s an event I have notes for where a library has a bunch of book mimics that get away with eating pets or rats that enter people’s homes when they check them out.

I figured they’d probably nearly alpha strike it and it’d get a single hit in and die. Things were going exactly as planned until it’s turn came around. It natural 20s a bite attack on the Warforged Paladin. 30 damage. (Full damage plus an extra damage roll.) Downs the Warforged in one hit.
I felt bad so in it’s loot I placed a health potion. It’s like the third room in a dungeon they are trapped in from a cave in.

I like to run mimics as abborations, and I basically describe the mimics from Prey. They have their true form that's basically little black slimes, but then they can freely shift into any simple object. Illithids and other abborations think of them kind of like how we think of mice. Annoying and problematic, but ultimately they don't pose much of a threat (to the abborations).

I like the idea that a mimic is basically a fantasy cuttlefish that lives in land caves.
Highly specialised ambush predators, weirdly though you would expect mimics to be more common if they could just find a gnarled log in a forest to copy and attack migrating deer or whatever, not just armour wearing humans.
I also imagine baby mimics to be like those Hubbabubba wind up gum...the circular ones. So they can roll away to find a new cave away from mama-mimic.

I like the mimic that can fold up it's body with a bunch of creaky joints and are basically super proficient circus acrobats. They have to find the physical objects and get in them, like a snail with it's shell. It makes for good rp and combat when their AC is just their 'shell' so a mimic that finds a nice iron chest has succeeded a bit more than a mimic in an old wooden one.

A concept I've wanted to work into a game or character backstory is a gargantuan mimic that's big enough to shape itself into a building or even an entire city block (with the interiors seeming totally mundane instead of mushy-gushy guts). But, plot twist, it's actually fully sentient and highly intelligent. And, double plot twist, *it's friendly and finds the idea of hurting/eating people utterly abhorrent.*
In my opinion probably the most fun way for this to play out would be that the mimic has assumed the form of an orphanage, and essentially acts as the kindly caretaker of the children there. They genuinely love the kids who live in them, without ulterior motive or exploitation (since I find wholesome twists way more interesting and subversive these days than grimdark ones). Again, the interior seems fully mundane, but basically like 75% of the furniture and decorations and stuff are just extensions of the mimic, and they communicate with their occupants through various busts and statues and stuff spread around to be less jarring than just a mouth opening up in a wall (and normally only perceives through those to give people privacy unless there's an emergency), but if they need to protect the kids they're not above morphing a pseudopod out of the floor and walloping some baddies (also it would be cute if the residents have to carefully check any bit of furniture before trying to move it lest the nearest bust on a shelf be all like "Ow! Hey, that's me you're yankin' on!")
The mimic-orphanage has been a landmark in the town for a long while, long enough that plenty of folks have grown up there. Now members of the community, these folks do what they can to care for the mimic and keep their identity a secret to avoid jackass murder-hobos rolling into town and "slaying the monster". Again, nothing nefarious, mostly just stuff like say someone opening a butcher shop attached the mimic to feed them by tossing some of their stock at a mouth on their basement wall, that sort of thing (yeah, mimics are carnivores, but that doesn't mean they have to eat people-meat). After all, the mimic was basically their parent and gave them a safe, loving, supportive home to grow up in, so they want to do their part to give back.
Best part of all this: Your PC with an orphan background can say "I was raised by the street... literally."

The idea that the final stage of the Mimic is basically The Thing is pretty great, though it would probably lack the ability to 'assimilate' the way that The Thing does, instead just eating and copying things outright, which does make it less capable of the massive biomass expansion that makes The Thing so uniquely dangerous. Still a very neat idea for an isolated place to be overrun with a massive Mimic colony that pretends everything is normal by acting like several people at once... and I'm conveniently working on an icy apocalypse campaign right now!

Had a character in one of my recent games reach out to touch a chest that was a mimic. He got a reflex save, rolled a 20 and pulled his wrist back at the last second. Cheers all around and the party draws swords, intent on kicking butt and gaining xp. Two rounds later, the mimic bit off the formerly offending arm and the character went into shock, collapsed, then exsanguinated in front of his terrified party while the mimic lapped up the blood. They now poke every chest they see with a pike. I plan to introduce door mimics next.

7:24 I'm now just imagining a mimic that is a completely normal chest but with HUGE ears on the side

I interrupted my day to rummage through my closet in search of a belt. I realized there wasn't one long enough with which to strap myself to the chair, so I went to a clothing store and bought a brand new belt of sufficient size. I have no intention of ever using this belt in, but as of right now I am thoroughly strapped in and ready to continue this video with your reimagining of the mimic.

I like the Hydrozoan Colony concept. Not only does it allow for natural examples, but it also allows for the "wizard did it" explanation by having knowledgeable people intentionally establish a Mimic colony on a location or object of their choosing.

I've never DMed yet, but I think it would be cool to make a sentient mimic be a villain in a campaign. Something for me to think about.
