    Would be interesting to see how the 980 compares to a 1060. Those two are pretty close in price these days. The 1060 should provide more modern API support, longer driver support and significantly less power draw, but the 980 might provide some more fps.

    • @pottingsoil723
      @pottingsoil723 7 месяцев назад +15

      Well 980 Ti was pretty close to a GTX 1070 so the 980 and 1060 likely aren't far apart in terms of performance. I'd wager within 5% depending on the game especially DX11 titles but newer DX12 games I think the 1060 will win easily. One of the reasons Pascal was so legendary. Never again will Nvidia make the mistake of giving us previous Gen xx80 performance for $300. Imagine a RTX 5060 that performs like an RTX 4080 for only $400. 😮😂😢

    • @ants9230
      @ants9230 7 месяцев назад +6

      In terms of raw FPS, the 1060 generally falls somewhere between a 970 and a 980 depending on what you're playing. Personally, for a few quid more than the 1080, I'd look for an RX5700XT which will usually outperform even a 1080Ti. That's a big jump above a standard 1080.

    That general overall speedup being what it is led me back in 2018 to jump from a GTX 980 originally bought new at launch to a 1080 Ti bought used, for a slightly lower cost, resulting in the genuinely minimum 2x speedup I wanted, alongside of course a hefty bump in VRAM. The caveat is of course power consumption, but a little voltage or power optimisation can fix that, without losing anything significant vs. stock.
    However, I have bought used 1080s for builds I've done for friends, most noteably a "family" PC for which I limited GPU power to 70%, reducing the performance down to that of a 1070 Ti, but reducing max power consumption by a far more significant 25%, which alongside some CPU optimisations of a 5600X resulted in a combined-with-monitor idle power draw of 37W, ideal in these electricity bill horror struck face inducing times.
    Another good use for 1080s is NVEnc. There's no significant difference in the video engine between the 1080 and 1080 Ti, so the 1080 does better in terms of transcoding efficiency, though the overall winner on that front is the 1050 Ti (after Pascal, NVIDIA reduced the no. of NVEnc chips in its consumer SKU video engines, hence the encoding performance is actually worse, something I confirmed by benching a friend's 2080 Ti). The 980 can do it too of course, but it's half the speed of Pascal.
    I wouldn't mind upgrading my 1080 Ti to again something at least twice as fast but with no more or preferably somewhat lower power consumption, at no more than the same 450 UKP budget of five years ago, yet in the current market there is absolutely nothing which qualifies as viable. Modern GPU pricing is absurd. Indeed, if one adjusts for power, clock and other factors, modern GPU products are actually worse now than Maxwell (the 4080 is basically now triple the cost of what the 980 was at launch, give or take; no thanks). Note the 7900 XT is also too expensive and too high on the power usage.

    I was using a gtx1080 until about two months ago. I had been planning to upgrade for the last year or so because I have a 1440p 144hz monitor and this last years batch of games was finally making it show some of its age at that resolution with Cyberpunk and Starfield being the main culprits. I finally bit the bullet on a 4070 so I could take advantage of RT and DLSS (almost got a 7800xt but I prefer DLSS to FSR and I'm going to be relying on DLSS in the coming years to get the most life I can out of the 4070).
    I upgraded my partner's pc from a 1650 with my old 1080 since they play at 1080p and it's perfect for them. They were going for $200-$250 USD on ebay a few months back and I thought that was a steller deal so I'm surprised they've dropped so much since then.

    Have a somewhat "broken" GTX 1080 Ti.
    I bought new cooling pads but they seem too thick and the GPU doesn't give full contact.
    So it runs around 90 - 92°C, which is even higher than the usual 80 - 82°C.
    Sadly I don't know what cooling pads I need and how thick they need to be, else it runs stable even in Final Fantasy 15, which uses all of the VRAM and GPU at 4K with 4K Texture Pack.

    im still using my 1070ti paired with a r7 1700from back in one of the other pc pricing crisis's , got that overclocked and still runs everything i need it to, maybe when gta 6 for pc releases ill upgrade but thats like what, 8 year lifespan of a gaming pc? seems mighty fine to me, spend big once and ride out that gpus lifespan as long as its capable enough

    Its worth gettting the 1080 if you are on a tight budget as you might get a few years out of it. What about the 6gb 980Ti? do you have one of these to do a comparison performance/cost

    I sort of use the GTX980. I have a GTX980M in my laptop, also with 4GB of VRAM. I've had the laptop for over 7 years and while I don't game on it very often, if I'm on the go and want to play games at low/medium settings, it still very much gets the job done.

    now I get why tech reviewers pair the tested GPUs with the best performing CPUs they have or at least try to obtain prior to testing, its for the scenarios one might keep their GPU down the line and years when they start a build with lesser CPUs than the showcased! Of course this is not the end all and be all use case but its finally shed light on my sight

    It's like you know what "stupid old cards" that I like to see bench marked head to head. Those 1080's are legendary in my eyes. There are lots of 1080's in my local market, ranging from $100-$180 depending on the seller and model. GTX980s are a bit more rare and go for around $75.

    Where I live the 1080 is about 2.5-3x the price of the 980. I’d be interested to know how the 980ti bs 1070 performs these days. It used to be that they were very similar but 1070 should be better these days due to more RAM and newer architecture. 980ti can be had for about 20-25% cheaper though. At least here.
