I learned the same lesson the hard way for cutting boards, so now I have 3: raw meat, savoury (i.e. veg, garlic and onion!) and a separate one for fruit - No more garlic flavoured watermelon 🍉😆!
I’m heartbroken for you and all of the people touched by Totoro’s beauty. What a loss. I was crying “my babies!” when we lost major trees and branches during the massive texas storm. It’s so hard to lose these living statues that are so life giving to so many creatures.
It’s really like saying they “paved paradise and put up a parking lot”. 😞 Yes, sad for all the little animals that enjoyed it too. Thanks for watching, Mary!
🚪I started decluttering last year but my hubby became ill and I stopped my progress to take care of him. He passed away last month and now I can devote all my attention to getting rid of all the stuff and things that are stressing me out. Focusing on decluttering is helping me to get through this difficult time.
I gave up on the dish rack last year. I could never find the perfect size or style and removing stains on it was a pain. I use a linen towel I made from leftover garment fabric & it dries quickly. It's been the best simple change I've made for the kitchen.
🚪 I don’t know how you do it but every upload makes such a big impact on me… you have changed my perspective on minimalism in the best way possible. You are my go to minimalist youtuber :) 100%
The vacuum in the cabinet? THANK YOU. My vacuum has always been somehow in the way. Now it has a real home! The best part, it was a cabinet I got for free 6 months ago, to use as a coffee/tea station (as my kitchen counterspace is almost non-existent), but I was only using the upper cabinet portion as you did with your minimalist display of glazed ware.
Poor Totoro! To make your life a bit greener again, I think some plants on the window side of the kitchen would look nice. Maybe a big standing plant at the wall part in between the windows or some hanging planters from the ceiling?
"Door emoji" 😀 I started decluttering. Now the charity bags sit in my bedroom waiting to go to the charity shop.... which I will do tomorrow. Your Videos are so motivating and full of inspiration 🥰🙂🙃
At first I thought the spice thing was weird, but I do get tired of searching through the spice shelf for a particular item so I might try it your way and see how it goes. 🙂😥the second emoji is because I hate change. Sometimes the thought of decluttering is more stressful than the actual decluttering.
Just found your channel as I’m doing a low buy year. It’s an extra pleasant surprise to find things that reminded me so much of my childhood in your videos like Bao Zi, Totoro and the dried green beans. 😀 It’s so great to handy hubby too!
Wonderful, welcome to you! Yes, my hubby always said he was handy but never had the chance to prove it in rentals before. 👏 Good luck with the low buy year. ✌️
Use the Ninja smoothie-blender accessory to make salad dressings and pesto sauces (eliminate the need for other containers because you make, store and serve in the one piece.) Use the Ninja smoothie tumbler to store and pour powdered supplies like collagen powder or protein powder or chia seeds, etc. Don't force yourself to keep buying stuff because you feel obligated to declutter. I like to have enough duplicates so I can fill the dishwasher before running it. Sometimes, I use and wash all 12 coffee cups. On a desperate day. I have been known to drink coffee out of a bowl instead of run a partially empty dishwasher.
I have a better hack than IKEA bookshelves for vacuum. I declutter my old vacuum and bought 2 other vacuums haha but wait, wait...!!! One is a tiny handy vacuum both are from Dreame brand and I love them (models d9 and t20 pro - they are both mopping too, so I decluttered my mop as well!). That is, 2 big things that always got me sweating changed into 2 smaller and more convenient ones! I can even vacuum my kitchen table! Best purchases everrrr!!!!
I honestly envy all of you who don’t need two versions of things in the kitchen. My kid and I have celiac disease, even a tiny crumb of normal bread does make us sick for days and weeks. So we have two toasters, two bread knives and a few other things, as my hubby still eats normal bread.
🚪 I have a blender that is a pain to clean, so loud when you start it and I haven’t used it in years, I dug it out while watching this OUT IT GOES!!!! Love your channel 🤩
🚪Marissa, your videos are so informative, thought-provoking, entertaining, and helpful. Thank you so much for inspiring me to start the declutter journey. Blessings to you and your family!
I use just a laundry basket with tea towel on the bottom instead of dishrack. It's very safe around children and it holds pans and big pots safely. You can just put it on balcony to dry or away of the kitchen. But as my main dishrack I created a three tier dishrack out of three tier plastic kitchen trolly. I took of the wheels. I put plate dishrack in the upper shelf and another rectangle dishrack with cutletery compartment in the middle shelf. I use bottom shelf for cups only. When I had small kitchen I used it to store all my dinnerware.
I also have duplicates. I have 3 wooden spoons, one small for oatmeal, scrumbled egss, rice and everything that is made in small pots/pans.one really long when I am making jams or cakes (I bake cakes a lot) and one medium large for sauces and soups. I also have two cutting boards. Each has two sides. On one side I cut meat, on the other side of the same cutting board I cut herbs, garlic, onion and then I have a separate cutting board for fruit, bread etc. I also have 2 stirs because I find it easier to make "schnitzel", pancakes, meat on a pan with two wooden stirs. 😀
The dish rack one speaks to me, just kidding, but yes why is it so hard to find a good one? The one I use was my mom's so it's probably about 25 years old (seriously). What I did was get rid of the plastic bottom, put down a kitchen towel and set it toward the front of the counter so now there is room behind it for cups, glasses, etc.
I have so much decluttering left to do. I appreciate your videos so much as someone who’s gone the years of hard work and can speak to us from the other side. (I found you from your collaborations with the Minimal Mom.)🚪
I think you can take the knife to a "Sozialkaufhaus". If you want to throw it away, you can take it to a "Wertstoffhof", to an "Altmetallhändler" or to a "Schrotthändler". 😊
I feel ready for a big declutter now that I've watched this video! Decluttering is necessary but not easy to put in practice mostly for those people (like me) who get attached emotional of their belongings!
Take your time! Ive been decluttering on and off since 2018 and I am really getting there. My house feels so light and not like an obligation anymore. But I still have a lot to let go of.
🚪 Love the video! So sad about Totoro wall! I've never had a kitchen that I have really loved, so just working to make the one I have now work the best it can for me!
I have had an Alessi dish rack that comes with a tray for 6 years and it is absolutely perfect in every way, not the least visually. Highly recommend investing a little more on our everyday items.
So sad about Totoro! Green and lush are so refreshing to our spirits after the dreary winter. I think the actual plant is Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia). Or something similar. But whatever it is, it will be missed! I hope by now something else is growing to brighten your day.
This is a great video! The Billy bookcase tip is the BEST idea to store your vacuum cleaner. I also have a canister vacuum in my small apartment and I currently have it in the corner of my bedroom. My closet space is too precious lol. 😂
Use the individual blending cups of your Ninja for grinding dry ingredients and for making salad dressings. I use mine all the time. I grind my flax and chia seeds, for example. I make enough salad dressing for a couple of days at a time. Once you start using them you will find more uses.. One blade is better for grinding. Hope this is helpful.
I'm not a minimalist but I like to try and only have stuff I actually use and care about around me. I liked your idea about reusing bottles for different stuff instead of buying bottles. I felt like I was wasting free stuff by throwing away those soy sauce packets from ordering out so I started reusing a bottle and put the soy sauce in there lol. I don't think I'll need to buy soy sauce for a while... though I should really stop ordering out so much lol
@@AtoZenLife Yeah, mostly sushi. Sometimes Chinese food. Before Covid I used to go out to sushi a lot but the place I went to is still not open for dining so I end up ordering it.
I have an incredible ornamental cherry tree in our communal garden which I look over. I've lived here for 15 years and take a photo of it in every season, every year. Last year our residents association cut a corner and had an unqualified labourer prune it. It's been "lion tailed" which is exactly as it sounds. I asked a professional tree surgeon to come and take a look, he said they took away every branch that shouldn't have been touched and left everything which should have been pruned. He said the tree will never be the same and in his opinion should be replaced. The level of grief was really hard for me to explain to people about a tree... or so I thought. Actually, everyone was sooooo sympathetic it blew my mind. xxxxx
Regarding the knive: try donating to a so called Sozialkaufhaus and if they don’t take it just get rid of it at a Wertstoffhof (similar to transfer station) 😊.
You can give your knife to a Sozialkaufhaus. There are many for example from Caritative Einrichtung, where they sharp it and sell it for a little bit of money, so people with less money could by all things they need.
Green mung bean: rinse and soak overnight. Boil in water until soft. Add sugar and milk. Yummy mung bean milk drink for kids. One of my son's fave snack.😄
🚪door!!! Sometimes you just get lucky. Your channel followed after watching/listening to, “The Minimal Mom.” Keep up the great presentations. You appear to also be down-to-earth! Kudos. ❤️
Your videos are always so informative, and it’s especially helpful seeing you settle into your apartment, as we just moved to a new place and are doing the same. Can you please share a link to your adjustable kitchen blinds?
Unfortunately I don’t have a link, because they were made locally, but search for “plissee” or “pleated blinds” in your local websites or Amazon - that should turn some thing up. 🙌
Good timing video tho!😍😍😍😍perfect to motivate a weekend de cluttering and to start a new week!!! Good bye xtra cutlery, that old raising powder, blender, and veg spiraliser (my ideal self trying hard on food presentation 😅), so relatable with Totoro’story, I had a little tree in front of my window that gave me joy and dancing shadows but now is gone 😢👏👏👏👏👏👏to Mr. Zen!
Such a sweet thing that cou called it Totoro, i love the movie too. Your Totoro was actually a wine-plant and not an ivy. It´s very common on old houses here in Germany. It´s such a shame that they cut it off. Why ??? Do they like brown, dead branches more than that beautyful wine leafes with that intense color changing in autuum? I will never understand people, who kill nature without thinking twice :( i hope they remove the plant so you won´t have to see dead Totoro all day. But i think they would not do it, because its so huge. And to get rid of your old knife you have to search for your nearest "Recyclinghof" or "Wertstoffhof" where you can leave it. (It´s like a landfill for things that can be recycled) It´s not allowed to put it in the "Restmüll" :D
I also don’t use my instant pot and I’ve been thinking of selling it. I do love my egg steamer though and use it regularly. My rice cooker and toaster oven are the other appliances I use a lot.
Do you have a Sozialkaufhaus near by? I give all my stuff to them - they sell everything very cheaply and the proceeds to go fund a home for disabled people (or similar). Good luck! I find getting rid of things the worst part of decluttering in Germany! :-)
Thank you so much for this nice and helpful video 🙏☺️ I am on my minimalism journey since Oct. 2020 - it‘s a hard one but worth it 😎👍 I live in Germany and things in very good condition i donate to Oxfam. Think they take knifes as well. 🌻💚
🚪 I've come to the conclusion, I need your husband 😂 your video was on point with so many things for me, I too have no closets, my vacuum lives in my back porch and I can't find a dish rack I like! My deepest sympathy for the loss of Totoro, I live in an apartment with 3 apartments sharing a backyard, been here 21 years, I had a beautiful garden that I nursed through a multitude of neighbors, right down to one who collected old washing machines. The present landlord wants to renovate and double the rents, so he has half built weird wobbly fences, so we lost our parking, cut the outdoor water off and outdoor electricity,.... So throughout the pandemic, I have lost my friend and neighbor of ten years and her apartment sits empty and watched all my plants that weren't killed by his workman die of thirst...... .I have also gained a neighbor that has screaming fights at least 3 times a week in the one renovated apartment it's been a tough year. Thanks for your videos.🤗
🚪im new here (already subscribe btw😉) and i just wanted to say that I genuinely really love watching ur video❤ idc about the echo or any other thing , im just so glad that i have found ur channel😊 it help me became motivated and im looking forward for every new video u posted. Thanks for ur hardwork (wish u and ur family all the best❤)
Thank you so much for your kind words, yes the echo was particularly bad in this video. 🙈 I think I’ve got it figured out in the other rooms, but the kitchen is just hopeless because it’s a big, hard box. Anyway I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos and wishing you lots of luck with your motivation! 👏
🚪i definitely and completely feel your dish rack situation. I HATE the one I have and can't really find 'the one, the precious' *gollum voice* (who actually don't cost a stratospheric price) I'm really sad about your totoro wall... I love these green walls, have one in my childhood home. Love your work, as always! 🌺
Funny...I LOVE that little egg steamer! I totally agree with you on the instapot! Too much work and you can’t see the food! Love your videos so much. Could the knife be donated to a church or somewhere they feed warm meals?
I have been looking for a stainless steamer for quite a while because I'm just horrible at taking proper care of the bamboo ones... Does your happen to have a brand I could find online ? I See some on Amazon but the reviews are all questionable with some rusting in a month or the glass lid breaking at first use . Major Brands like All-Clad etc don't have this type, so hard to find quality items that will last OTL
🚪Im on the second year of declutter a cupboard at a time as removing things are having to be done on foot but slowly seeing results and getting the family involved now.
This is unrelated to kitchens, but would you consider talking about the question of having more children and all the thousands and thousands of accessories babies require (OK it just feels like thousands)? I'm in the process of decluttering, and am not sure if I want to have more kids or not. So far, I've just categorized all the baby clothes and stuff (bottles, bottle sterilizer, play mats, age-appropriate toys etc.) as my own kids grow out of them and am compartmentalizing that separately in boxes so it's at least not with my "daily living" stuff. Were you always sure you were two and done, or did you ever consider having more? How would you recommend decluttering in a situation like mine?
I started decluttering my office, but it's so hard, because there are so many craft supplies I feel attached to. So I decided to do the kitchen first, because I'm feeling really stuck...
Marissa ❤️ So sorry about Totoro 💔🌿 Alway love your content. I went to Berlin in 2014 and can’t wait to go Jack one day 🇩🇪 😭😭🥰 I have been on my Journey since 2017. 🚪 It made it possible for us to move in the pandemic lockdown with 2 kids (3,11/2) and a newborn 3 months after my c-section. I only have one drawer, one wardrobe and the garage to go and we are done 🥳 I can’t wait for bb4 to be born in August and then everything baby will be donated 😈😈😈
Thank you for your suggestions, we don’t like rugs very much, but I think that the echoes are not as bad in most of my other videos - because the kitchen is basically a big hard box, it echoes the most. 🤗 Thanks for watching!
would you mind adding a link to that dish rack as well as the Chinese steamer pot? I have been looking for such items and would lov3 your recommendation 😊 Thank you!
Oh my goodness, it's so hard to find a good steamer, apparently! My in-laws got this one in China - do you have any local Asian Markets? You can usually find good ones right in the Asian store, our local one has them in stock 100%. I cannot find anything that looks good on Amazon for the steamer (ours is a double stainless steel steamer, it has this little insert you can put in the bottom), but here is the dish rack: amzn.to/3vUszCG. I kept the old utensil holder and tray bottom. So complicated, I know. 😂
It is both surpringly difficult, so thank you so much for the link for the rack! I live in a small town but probably the tiny Asian store might order one for me - thanks a lot for your help and great content!🤗
If I come into money I plan on hiring a personal organizer... I DO NOT mean someone who will organize my stuff for me because I can't really delegate that. It's like you can't get someone to work out for you. You can't hire someone to go through your personal photos Etc and throw things away. You hire someone to "nag you" to workout. But I have done my own personal organizing and been very effective it in the past.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting some realistic artificial Ivy plants to put on top of your kitchen cabinets. The human brain cannot tell the difference, and seeing greenery is extremely calming.

Sometimes you just get lucky. Your channel followed after watching/listening to, “The Minimal Mom.” Keep up the great presentations. You appear to also be down-to-earth! Kudos. ❤️
Oh wonderful, so glad you “found” me! Cheers and thanks for watching. 🤗
🚪 Organizing and decluttering is something I've always enjoyed doing, but now I'm trying to take it even further!
Good luck 🍀👍
Wow your home looks so beautiful.
Thanks so much! 🤗
(It´s like a landfill for things that can be recycled)
It´s not allowed to put it in the "Restmüll" :D
🚪currently on my own decluttering journey. Working on our bedroom and the kitchen is next. Thanks for the great tips!
Thanks and good luck, Caitlin! 🙌
@@AtoZenLife Your welcome! Thank you, I appreciate it!
🚪. Thanks so much for this. You are so wise and you totally motivate me every blog I read and video I watch!! You are so lovingly organized. Thanks!!
Thank you so much for your kind words, Wendy - it’s great to have you here every week. 🤗
I am on a decluttering journey myself I have enjoyed your videos
"There is time and what you do with it." 💕
It literally takes a made up mind. Great tips ❤️
🙌
Thank you dear Marissa! Just plain common sense ! Bisous from Alsace 🤗😊😘
Totoro was so beautiful!!! 😭
Was on the road all day and missed this notification until just now! Great video!
Ooooh, new RV vlog coming soon then is it? Thanks for watching and have fun!
Working on my kitchen this week. Great tips just what I needed to keep motivated.
So sad about Totoro! We don't have enough green to look out at, especially in cities.
I also don’t use my instant pot and I’ve been thinking of selling it. I do love my egg steamer though and use it regularly. My rice cooker and toaster oven are the other appliances I use a lot.
Instant Pots are SO EASY to sell on Facebook Marketplace - now, before the holidays is probably a good time Julie. 👍
@@AtoZenLife Thanks you too😍 Your reply just made my day 🥰🥰🥰
🚪I’m doing it! Thanks to your encouragement!
Use the smaller individual Ninja containers for sauces or salad dressings.
🚪 done and enjoying my calm home with my family, but it it’s like eating vegatables; you dont just do it once, if you want to live well 😅
🚪 I still have a long way to go, but will keep trying 😢
🚪 We started last summer. Making significant progress. Love your tips and advise.
I love your rolling blinds. I need those too
🚪 , hi marissa, dankeschön für die ideen, ich gebe die aussortierten sachen immer im trödelladen ab, auch messer (gut verpackt)
Meant to add - 🚪
I have a dish rack... maybe one day I wont. But right now I have the space for it so it’s fine.
Those words pretty much sums up my entire feelings about dish racks. 😂
🚪oh yeah! I’m learning how life changing this is!
Your channel is so inspiring! 🥰
Thanks for your kind words. 🤗
Why do not try to create your own little Totoro? I mean you have enough space for more greenery, don't you? Also it's a nice proyect
Yes, you could have plants in pots on your balcony!
🚪 Enjoying your channel and all your great tips!! Thank you for being a fantastic guide on my minimalist journey!
Great tips, thanks for sharing! 😊I would love to watch the video on cleaning stainless steel surfaces but could not find it?
Marissa ❤️ So sorry about Totoro 💔🌿
Alway love your content.
I went to Berlin in 2014 and can’t wait to go Jack one day 🇩🇪 😭😭🥰
I have been on my Journey since 2017. 🚪
It made it possible for us to move in the pandemic lockdown with 2 kids (3,11/2) and a newborn 3 months after my c-section. I only have one drawer, one wardrobe and the garage to go and we are done 🥳
I can’t wait for bb4 to be born in August and then everything baby will be donated 😈😈😈
That is AMAZING progress, congratulations on both fronts (baby and declutter)!!! 👏
@@AtoZenLife thanks ❤️❤️❤️
Please buy and use area or scatter rugs. It will make your home more cozy and get rid of the echo, every time you talk.💕💕
Are you in Germany? I can add links but you might not get the same thing if you live elsewhere. 🇩🇪
We used a BILLY bookcase for a pantry in our kitchen. 👍
My friend in NYC does this professionally! They can be very helpful and motivating. 👏
Good video friend.Love the solutions you found.
Thanks, Jo! It’s been really helpful. 🙌
@@AtoZenLife Welcome,Marissa!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting some realistic artificial Ivy plants to put on top of your kitchen cabinets. The human brain cannot tell the difference, and seeing greenery is extremely calming.
Aww I’m so sad about Totoro…my kids love that movie as well. Some people have no appreciation for the beauty of green, growing things. 😭
