I really liked All Bad. It covers a serious topic that most couples have to go through. Facing the truth of certain aspects of the relationship is very difficult sometimes, and J.I.D. spoke/rapped/sang to this very naturally. It didn't feel forced, and it was also calm and serious. The bouncy bass in the background was creative as hell too, but he didn't let it or the other instruments overpower the song like how other artists might. Although I feel like it was sort of out of place in the context of his album, I do think there is niche for that type of content and style in rap. Also, I found Underwear to be hilarious as fuck, esp as an Asian 'cause a bunch of Asian folks say "underway" instead of "underwear." Got me smh and smiling the whole time.
This album clicked for me better after I listened to DiCaprio 2, for sure. I've gotta say, though, that because I can relate from personal experience, the writing in Hereditary and All Bad is AMAZING. He's saying what I wish I could've said sooner. I love how in Hereditary, a calm retrospective analyzing the core source of inevitable interpersonal dysfunction, he asks "ain't that a waste of time?" and realizes after all the recollections that it isn't because of the lessons he learned, which is a really important message for people who have too much investment in a sinking ship and need to take a leap of faith back towards civilization. All Bad sounds so sweet while recalling the harshest elements of a defunct relationship, a proper contrast of the feeling of love versus consequences where I can't help but feel him say "I can't handle the truth" after dropping these double-edged compliments. I can't bring myself to call that bad writing, as there's a very clear resolution built into the aesthetic and structure of the tracks. If anything, the only thing that bothers me is his vibrato in Hereditary. Maybe slightly different production could've helped emphasize his voice, but the track by itself flows so smoothly between different instrumental layers.
Mike Craig he didn't say he didn't like political music, he said he didn't think he would like how political THIS album is. like b4.da.$$ and 1999 had some political songs, this album is mostly political. that commenter doesn't think he will like the change.
