You did a great job of explaining why I like this "Escape the Dark" series... I love the simplicity of Dark Castle, and the more advanced gameplay of Sector. The theme of the Castle is great, but SO is the space theme... no preference for me on that front. I've played Castle so much that I've been really enjoying Sector lately. Perhaps the opposite situation for you, since you started with Sector. Great review. No game series does a better job of evoking a mood and story... and while the dice rolls can feel unfair sometimes in an already very unforgiving game system, that is actually PART of the fun of the game, where you really do think you will probably die in this god-forsaken place with these horrifying monsters.. one fun tidbit is that the games have original, official soundtracks that you can put on while you play, and that is a really fun way to make it feel even more thematic.
Thanks again for your energy, info, and lack of spoils. I am also a fantasy over sci-fi guy (10 to 1 for me). And a special thanks for your straight talk - so much of RUclips is a giant marketing machine (commercial!).
If Themeborne keep making these games, I'll keep buying them. I'd say I prefer Castle for the theme, and sector for the mechanics. I recall that escape the dark castle mentions a forest somewhere in the narrative. Oh please let there be an escape the dark forest :)
My wife and I spent one evening making cards for “Escape the Dark Forest” which you can only play after you successfully beat the boss in Castle. The first card allows some health to be regained, etc. A highlight from our creations is a boss that is essentially a horde of ants that seems to come from everywhere. In any case, just thought that was great you’d noticed that reference to the dark forest as well. Would be cool if they made an “official” expansion for that, for sure. :)
It's a great game, and with the expansions you get a lot more or replayability. I'm lucky I live in Spain and The dark sector is hard to find so I have not the dilemma of whether buy it or not :D
Nice review. I have a copy and the first expansion. You could of showed a sample character/ black chapter die I think, and still not spoil anything. I don’t feel there is a real story there besides the characters are trying to escape the castle. I also wish the chapter cards were more connected and not so independent of each other. I still enjoy playing this though. I use d20s to countdown life points. 😉
Sector is a much better "game". Castle is dull and MAYBE good for kids if you want a thematic game with zero skill. Sector at least threw some other things in there to make you think besides who goes first and using the items when it's obvious'. Sector achieves a lot more in terms of providing a story with some actual strategy to consider. The artwork on Castle was rather novice level also. They seemed to step it up in Sector making it more CYOA rather than 2nd grade drawing challenge. Nice review Marco, even if I disagree on this one.

Totally true about how the dice rolls can destroy you pretty quick.

Marco, no one would have be angry at you if you would add the link to the other video which you referred to.
