Sanctions must not apply to Ural, I gather. But there should not be sanctions in any case, as Russia is the righteous party, and this little war was totally provoked. And they are winning.

Yes, I'm a long time Uralista, if you're wondering they're great, easy to operate and easier to service, you won't need to do repairs unless you thrash it to death ~ Urals are made cuntry road tough, this means they're fantastic in town .
I love the blue color .
I still have my 1994 and 1996 Tourist 650C Solos, never had the heads off, still on the original cluchtes and brake shoes .
"The most fun you'll ever have with your pants on" .
Ural also sells Solo bikes with different front forks, I love canyon carving on them .

I have one of these, a 2011 Gear Up. It's fun to ride around town with my dogs and to do errands on, but that's about it. You can ride it around town ,off road, and on slower roads, but it's not something you can go on a long road trip on- about like a scooter. However, I've met a couple of daredevils who've done it. It's mostly suitable only for lower speed roads, it just doesn't have enough power-- only has about 40hp and it weighs a hefty ~730lbs( 330kg). The top speed is about 60mph( 96kph), and that's maxed out, not cruising speed. You wouldn't want to go very fast on this thing anyway because above about 50mph it feels dangerously unstable. They're also absurdly overpriced. The mileage is not very good either, only about 25 mpg. Some of the fasteners rust easily. I do like the fact that it has a kick starter as well as electric start, and it's about the only motorcycle on the market that still has this. It starts good in in cold weather which I like. I also like the fact that it has a spare tire- that's come in handy a couple of times when I had flats and kept me from being stranded. My little dogs love this thing. I'd shake the keys and say '' get ready!'' and they'd go bananas with excitement. Sometimes Poppy would sneak outside and sit in it waiting to go. Where's Poppy? I'd look out the window and there she was, sitting in the sidecar, waiting. Little Poppy was a born biker dog, always up for adventure. Always be sure your dog wears goggles! Anyway, we got lots of attention. We'd frequently ride to dog parks and forests and we'd have tons of fun. The years flew by and Poppy and Dixie are gone now, they are in dog heaven, and I sure miss those two little rascals. They loved me and I loved them. Lots of memories.

That's a beautiful color! I'd really like a Ural, but do too much long distance interstate and highway riding. I don't expect a sidecar rig to be a speed machine, but need something that holds 75 easily without being near redline. And I'm spoiled with my cruise control and heated grips..lol
    One day though!

How can this motorcycle, AS MUCH AS I LOVE IT, could be worth 22k? I just can't understand it. Yes, they're good quality. But there are bikes in the world, better in quality, less in price. I am being heartfelt here: can someone please explain this to me?

    • @arcanum3000
      @arcanum3000 Год назад +13

I don't have any special inside knowledge, but just thinking about them and how they're made:
      - In terms of materials and construction, they're literally ~50% more bike than a standard 2 wheeler. More frame, more body, more mechanical bits, more wheels, more stuff.
      - While IMZ Ural has made strides in switching to industry standard parts, the last (as far as I know) 2WD sidecar rig still in production is, of necessity, going to have a bunch of specialized parts specific to the Ural sidecar rigs. Those sorts of specialized parts are expensive.
      - Urals are still, I believe, mostly hand built. There's not a factory of robots churning them out. Hand built is expensive.
      - Urals are low volume bikes. I think I recall they only make ~2000 bikes a year. Low volume, specialized vehicles (or anything else) tend to be expensive.
I can't tell you whether $22k or whatever is worth it to you, and I totally get not wanting to spend that much on what, to most people, will be a toy. I'm just saying there are legitimate reasons Urals are expensive.

It's a great looking bike. But I wonder at parts availability considering the war climate with Russia now. But the main draw back for me is the highway speed versus cost. I have a Royal Enfield Bullet. It's dirt cheap (not side car), has a highway gear, and gets good mileage. The fun factor is just right for the price. I use my Super Tenere for long distance adventure though.

I rode down to Airdrie to see some new and a pre owned Urals in a show room at a consignment dealership on Nov 18. I was one of few riders on the road, it being mid November. Upon first seeing the Urals I was immediately impressed with how much larger they are compared to how they look in videos. I was also smiling because these machines look like they came straight out of a Mad Max movie. The Ural looks like it could go anywhere. So, I asked the young man attending to me if I could sit on one and he agreed I could do so. That is when the real issue with this Soviet era designed motorcycle arose and why I could never ride one, alas in its present configuration.
I am a tall man, over six feet with large feet, size 13s. When you put those feet into motorcycle boots one ends up with a size 14 plus shoe that can not fit into the bizarre, moronic set up on the right side. First of all the boxter is the wrong motor for this set up. The cylinder head sticks out and one must place one's foot under the thing onto a foot rest for a midget and be able to manipulate the rear brake and the back up gear pedal, these are close to each other side by side. Then, if you are someone with a small foot and tiny boots, you still have to contend with one of two struts holding the side car to the bike. This front strut rested against the back of my leg. Indeed, I could not fit my boot under the cylinder and onto the pedals. And then, to think, there you are with that hot metal cylinder head and the giant fuel injection pipe, right there over top of your foot and at your shin. One bad bump and your foot would burn on the thing. I think Ural should get a hold of me and I will help them re design this thing so that it will be a much better product with an inline twin or V twin engine and not the boxter and an integrated frame and better strut placements.

Hopefully the casting issues with the main gear box were fixed. The kickstarter has a tendency to cause a crack in the gearbox if the stroke ends up kicking it back. Not a good design, especially when it happens with 3k miles on a 3 year old Ural.
