    • @GeebusCrust
      @GeebusCrust Год назад +16

      Entirely believable too. The computer systems in some of these launch platforms are from the 60s.
      The math is certainly complicated, and the rockets and shuttles themselves are certainly cutting edge, but yeah, the tech required to render realistic, interactive 3D models is certainly more complicated than what is essentially an ignition switch.

    • @thebluestig2654
      @thebluestig2654 Год назад +4

      @@GeebusCrust Rocket science is Algebraic Trigonometry. Displaying 3D models is Geometry. Carmack was only right when discussing 2D graphics, not 3D.

    • @casteanpreswyn7528

      @TheBlueStig this is *only* true if you assume 3d models in a vacuum, and literally displays your ignorance of what it takes to make a realistic and non-matte 3d model.
      If a 3d model has to interact with physics or/and light(yes, they are different), you are objectively wrong. Rocket science is comparatively easier cause the universe has constants, whereas 3d modeling requires way more variables. Like purpose, intention, meaning, light source location, indication of other objects, and even how color changes based on context.

      @NutjobGTO Год назад +14

      It was his design that he patented, and then Nasa dug through the patents and copied it off his patent filings without paying him royalties, if I remember right
      But apparently his patent documents were so screwed up they couldn't sort out what he was trying to do and it kept tearing itself apart, so they had to finally call him in, admit they stole the plans without paying him royalties, and have him sort it out
      At which point the story goes 'aha! Now Bruce Willis has Nasa over a barrel and can demand anything he wants or else he won't help them!' while glossing over _If you don't help EVERYBODY DIES BRUCE AND YOUR PATENTS AND MONEY ARE MEANINGLESS_

    • @ShaggyRogers1
      @ShaggyRogers1 11 месяцев назад

      @@pierrelaplant7926 The government must follow all laws on patents that regular private citizens do. The only way for the US government to bypass the patent protections is if they go through the due process to confiscate the patent due to national security. In order to legally confiscate the patent, the original owner must be compensated for their patent being stripped from them.
      You don't have to sell something to violate a patent. Creating a patented item for your own personal usage without permission is a violation. The government creating unlicensed copies of patented inventions without compensation of any kind is illegal, because that is straight up theft via government agents. The US Constitution was explicitly written to prevent government from just being able to take things from private citizens without due process or compensation.

    I think that drilling is more complicated than 'press a button and go'. That said, drilling is easier when you are just drilling a hole and not drilling to retrieve something like water/gas/crude oil.
    Drilling to hit a specific point (not depth but point) takes some wild skill and math since they will sometimes drill horizontally to get between plates of stone. There are some cool stories behind the art of modern-day drilling. But digging a hole straight down is not one of them. Now, if they were told they had to drill around plates of iron, which they seemed to constantly run into, that would need the team they had... But they didn't even do that.

    • @BeOtterMyFriend
      @BeOtterMyFriend Год назад +2

      It was used. They actually spent their whole budget on somebody frame by frame editing the creases out of the green screen. Then, as that felt unnatural, frame by frame put some in in the right places. This might feel unnecessary, but it's like people being put off by hearing actual hoof sounds in films and expecting coconut shell sound effects. The actual creases would put us way off, so they have to cgi them in. Whoever did it in this video (I think it was Karl's first time to do it himself?) did a great job of getting the exact same green on top of the actual green. As proven by you not noticing. As they say: The best cgi is the one you don't notice is there.

    The oil drillers were astronauts in away that the rich people who took those trips to low orbit were astronauts.
    Operating the drill by vibration was a intangible skill that isn't taught and may not be a thing in real life but it was in that movie.
    You drill through the earth the drill vibrates and puts tension on its various component depending on the composition of the strata.
    You here the components feel the vibration you make a decision to keep from breaking your bit.
    Not saying thats a real thing but it was in the movie, it is a intangible and those skills aren't taught kind of like floating a manual transmission. You learn it after somone gives you a overview of how its suppose to work.
    Maybe being a geologist gave tom hanks character some insight into this intangible.
    Actually easier to teach a suvillain how to manuever in low gravity and to use nasa versions of tools you use everyday then try to teach a intangible to a astronaut or anybody else.
    Five days time scale doesn't help. This isn't to say Michael bay was thinking of any of this.
    It was just cool for him to make some sort of spacecowboy reference of a entire movie.

    To be fair, in a week, it probably is better to teach the oil riggers than it is the astronauts. The mission critical aspect is drilling to a certain depth, within a certain time, into a material with relatively unknown properties, in a hostile environment.
    An astronaut, let alone two teams of them, are not going to become expert drillers within a week. Just like you're not going to get an oil rigger to be an expert astronaut within a week. However, you don't need the drillers to be expert astronauts, you just need to teach them how to not die for a few hours in space. An actual astronaut can do the rocket science stuff, which is what happens in the film.
    To illustrate it further, if they had to do brain surgery on the asteroid, they'd teach the brain surgeon how to not die in space, rather than teach the astronaut how to do brain surgery.
