  • Hello friend's In this video we will see How to make AUTOMATIC WATER LEVEL CONTROLLER using timer IC 555
    Working- When the water level goes below 'low-level sensor', the connected motor will automatically Start and when water reaches 'high-level sensor' motor will automatically Stop.
    Components required:-

    Thank you so much for this video. I have used this circuit to operate a 24 volt sprinkler valve to maintain the water level in my swimming pool, and it works perfectly.

    I guess you can be a great teacher, by teaching step by step, every details, wonderful video, even for those who have no clue about electronics. (like me), but the question is, if we want to reverse the function, instead of shut off the pomp, it starts the pomp and discharge the water, if not, what about upside downing the ruler as a sensor marker, does it make it to work revers?       if you sink only 12v wire & the top wire to water.. relay trips continuously

      @@kabirprince8597 thanks for the reply. i am looking for a water pump protection controller. if there is no water in the main tank , the water pump stop automatically , the use of the pump is to fill the over head tank from the main tank. the circuit in this video can be install in the over head tank , very good video ,now looking for pump protection. .

    Tried this build with an led bulb as output and it worked like a charm..Tomorrow I will try this build for my 1 HP water pump. Hope it works.

    I have tested this with Every circuit app but its not working. I have seen the same circuit in all of the other RUclips videos but no use . Can u please troubleshoot this

    lights get on. and when i first power this circuit relay sound once. and when i tried to test it with water levels its not getting off. means not switching or getting signals from water. no trigger. kindly tell me whats wrong? But i used all resistors 10 K 1M OF 1/2 WATT ? Is it any problem using 1/2 watt instead of 1/4 watt? PLZ HELP ME

    Hello, since 12v and 1A adapter is been used to power the circuit. Is it still needed to add circuit protection like short circuit and overload protection on the device?

    Brother dry run protection is needed in this circuit . In case if motor unable to pump it should stop automatically otherwise motor will burn.

      When I used 12v 1amp DC adapter for powering the relay starts on and off in a strange speed why? But when I connects 12v battery (9v+3v) it works fine. Can you tell me the problem? How much amp perfect for this circuit?

      the adapter you are using is sufficient for this circuit. but always use a good quality power supply unit. A poorly-designed switching type PSU is not a good choice for any circuit

    Thank you for this video. I have watched dozens in my search for a sump pump control circuit and this is by far the best, especially where you show the soldering process. I have two questions and three suggestions and would value a response.
    Q1 : I want to use this to control a sump pump i.e. Switch on at high level, off when low. Can I just swap the high (6) and low (2) level sensors on the IC555 to high (2) and low (6) ?
    Q2 : I want to use this in a rainwater collection system so will it work given the low conductivity of rainwater? If not, is there any way of overcoming this without resorting to electromechanical devices such as float switches?
    I admire your patience with answering the same questions over and over again. You are a Saint...
    S1 : For those asking for circuit diagrams, suggest that they simply set playback speed to slow, pause the video when it shows the the diagrams and do a screen capture.
    S2 : Suggest in the description as well as your opening comment that viewers first read through all the existing comments before asking questions since it is highly probable that they will find that their question has already been asked and answered.
    S3 : Place some links to videos about how transistors / mosfets / diodes / etc work. Resist the temptation to to spoonfeed.
    Thank you again for sharing. I has rekindled a childhood interest in electronics that was put aside when funding for studying electronic engineering was not available but was for civil engineering. I am now retired and enjoying dabbling again. Learning new things is great for keeping those brain cells active and fit.

      So you want to use it on a sump pump, but by swapping high(6) with low(2) level sensor will not make the circuit to work the way you want....
      here's what we can do:-
      Option1- Connect AC wire to the N/C terminal in place of N/O terminal of relay i.e. In the circuit use 'N/C terminal of the relay' instead of 'N/O terminal of the relay'....and the circuit will work the way you want [No need to change any other things in the circuit].
      Option2- In the above configuration Relay will be in ON state when your motor is OFF and vice versa. so most probably most of the time your relay will be in ON state, to overcome this we can do some modification in the circuit,,,, If you can give your email address I can send you the modified circuit diagram. .thanks

    Greetings, I am beginner in electro, schematic that you have shared with us, I managed to run it, but if it pleases, to be added again for when the well water has receded, the water pump engine will turn itself off at its sensor limit, even though the sensor to the water tank gives orders are still filling in, thank you.

    Considering the circuit is in power off mode initially. If the water level is in between low and high sensors and power on the circuit, then 555 IC output is not predictable, so motor may turn on or off. Do you handle this condition?

      when the main power supply disconnected and restored then;
      ) if the water is touching High-level sensor -- Water pump will be in OFF state.
      ) if the water is between High and Low-level sensor -- Water pump will be in OFF state.
      ) if the water is below Low-level sensor -- Water pump will turn ON.

      You can use 9v battery for this circuit, but the specified relay may not be suitable for you.

      any resistor between 500K to 1M [choose higher value resistor].
      also, multiple resistors can be added in series to get a higher value resistor.

    When I powered the circuit the pump starts and as soon as water touches the upper level wire the pump stops. But problem is that when water level goes slightly down from upper level sensor wire the pump starts again. But according to diagram the pump should be start only when water level goes below low level sensor wire. Can you solve my mistakes?

      The situation you are explaining will occur if the high-level sensor and low-level sensor are exchanged, see high-level sensor goes to pin 6 and the low-level sensor goes to pin 2 of IC.

      Yes, you can use a 6v submersible pump, use 6v power supply for your pump(6v in place of 220v @ 0:50).

      Please check all your connections..
      try after replacing IC with new one,
      If your project is working and IC is getting hot, then problem might be with your power supply use a good quality power supply(Adaptor).

    will it work with the same components for a single phase motor or else will it have to be changed if yes please tell

      If your single phase motor is rated less than or equal to 1HP then nothing to be changed. For higher HP motor you just need to upgrade Relay.
      use high amp relay for higher HP motor. Thanks

      the circuit will work in a voltage range of 5v to 16v, choose a relay according to the supply voltage i.e. use 6v relay if you are using a 6v power supply.
      If the supply voltage is between 5v to 9v, you can change these values; all 10k to 1k, 1M to 560k and 2.2k to 560ohm. .thanks

    I want to connect a solonoid valve with
    A tap(or a pipe) and then when water is low I need to open solonoid valve and start the pump.
    Can you tell me what extra modification I need to do I your circuit for this?

    shall we use 5v relay instead of 12 v and power supply?, because i want to use it for cooler only not on 1 or 2 hp motor

      @Rohit Patel , yes we can use a 5v relay with 5v power supply.
      and not necessary but you can change these value in the circuit- all 10k to 1k, 1M to 560k and 2.2k to 560ohm. .thanks

      and 5v sugar cube relay will work fine for most of the cooler water pump.

      Low level sensor wire is not working only upper level sensor is working. Is there any issue with the wiring connected to the pin number 2 and 6 of the timer ic? I tried it on the proteus 8 according to your instructions successfully but on PCB I failed.

      555 IC becomes very hot when supply 12v DC.

      you can use 681k capacitor or this circuit can work even without this capacitor (but sometimes circuit may cause false trigger ) , so later on replace this cap with 0.01uf cap. .thanks

    Hello..I used 2n2222 transistor to run the circuit,its not working.its showing both green and red light at the same time when on.thinking may be is not connected to a pump that’s why is showing both at the same time.then I used 1hp pump,it’s still showing the same thing.which in actual sense,it will only show red light when the controller is on and the green light will later turn on when the motor pump is pumping,but is not.its not sensing the level of water to pump,talk more to trip off when full.whats wrong? And what could be the problem? Thanks.

      have you connected 2n2222 correctly, as pinout(Emitter pin, Base pin, and Collector pin) of 2n2222 is different from BC547..

      Ok.Don’t know if is well connected.but I connected my emitter to the one that passes through the 2.2k resistor,the diode and to the relay and my collector passes through the 1M resistor,timer,which reaches to the negative 12v.buh later interchange the connection of the transistor,but still not working. please tell me in details on what to do.

      sometimes component gets damage due to the wrong connection, try after replacing 2n2222 with a new one.

      You can use 5v dc pump in place of 220v WaterPump(as in video), just use any 5vdc power supply in place of AC220v [ 0:50 ] . .You can use usb charger as 5vdc power supply, Thanks

      you can use any motor, 220v AC motor or 12v DC motor, for 220vAC motor you will need 220vAC(as shown in diagram) and for a 12vDC motor you will need to connect it to12vDC supply.,,,, just pick a right relay, check maximum current that relay can handle and also check current rating of your motor, the maximum current rating of the relay should be higher than the current rating of your motor. .(specification of relay are usually written on it).
      for example, If the maximum rated current of your motor is 5amp then you can use a 10amp relay.
      small size motor usually draws less current and will work with most of the commonly available relay.
      (This circuit requires a relay with a coil-voltage of 12V) ....

    When line voltage less then 200, pump automatically switch off and when line voltage 200 or more, pump automatically turn on.

      It's hard to give a deep explanation of everything in a short comment.
      I will try to explain a few of the above-mentioned point in short.
      why BC547??
      It is not necessary to use only BC547, we can use almost any NPN transistor, for example, we can use BD139,TIP122,2n2222 e.t.c
      and many other NPN transistor. but why we have chosen BC547 and not BD139(for example). let's see some spec of these transistors.
      the maximum collector current of BC547 is 100ma i.e. it can handle a load up to 100ma, small Sugercube10A relay used in this circuit draws less than 40ma of current, so BC547 is sufficient to drive this relay. now let's see BD139, it can handle a load up to 1.5amp(1500ma), yes we can use BD139 but it will unnecessarily increase cost and size of the circuit, it will be something like using a mini truck for transporting 1kg apple. .now let's see other condition, If you are going to use this circuit for high HP motor then this Sugercube10A relay will not work you will need a higher amp relay, here minimum current required for relay(relay coil) to work may be higher 100ma(you will need to see spec of relay) and if it is so, then you will need to replace BC547 with 2n2222 or BD139 or any other similar transistor.
      why 1N4007? ..similar situation with this, there are many other options we can use. 1N4007 is used as a flyback diode in this circuit.
      why 0.01uF?? actually, it is an internal matter of IC 555. when Pin5(control voltage Pin) of IC555 is not in use it is usually connected to ground through a small value capacitor. but why??.. circuit will work even without this capacitor but if it not connected, the circuit will become immune to noise, it can pick up noise and rf which can cause some error in the functionality of the circuit..it is something like, you get a cut on your finger and you are not using a bandage.
      For a deep understanding of this circuit, you will need to understand these things,(just google them)
      )Voltage divider )Resistor at transistor base )current limiting resistor )Internal structure of IC555
      )Comparator )SR Flip Flop )NPN transistor )transistor as a switch )Flyback Diode )Ohms law.

    Thanks for the very useful video...i have a question. I want to use a double throw relay ( which can control +ve and - ve of the load). Its rating is 6 amps and 200ohms...when i connected this relay in the circuit it is not working...do i need to change the transistor which can handle bigger currents? If yes please advise which one.
