- A treat to be in a studio!! Thrilled to be guests at Rupert Gillett's Holly Barn Studio for his two requests. For his channel Rupert requested "Button Up Your Overcoat" (see it on his channel here: • JAZZ CELLO TUNES: Week... ) and for ours, this number from 1969.

The multi-talented Rupert also recorded and mastered three of my CDs (samplers below!)

The story of the text to this strange song is worth noting: The song was written specifically for the actor playing Private Seidman in the original film, who sang it during the faux-suicide of Walter "Painless Pole" Waldowski in the film's "Last Supper" scene. Director Robert Altman had two stipulations about the song for composer Johnny Mandel: it had to be called "Suicide Is Painless" and it had to be the "stupidest song ever written". Altman attempted to write the lyrics himself, but upon finding it too difficult to write "stupid enough," he gave the task to his 14-year-old-son Michael, who wrote the lyrics in five minutes. Robert Altman said that while he only made $70,000 for having directed the movie, over the years his son earned more than $1 million for having co-written the song.
However stupid it's meant to be, it's the singer's number one job to be sincere with whatever words they are inhabiting for the duration of the song. You be the judge!

very nice! thank you, all of you!!! ❤
❤great cover...thank you ❤
Wow! I was not expecting this... I've spent the last couple days searching for the best cover of this song and I think I've found it. There is so much talent between these three individuals, my mind is blown. Bravo! Thank you so much!
Wow thank you!! That is a huge compliment and we massively appreciate it!
nice version, a foot note to this song and the American dream. Robert Altman had Johnny Mandel write the music for the theme and try to have him write lyrics but couldn't come up with anything , Altman son Mike was on set ,14 years old , Robert ask him to come up with a crazy set of words and bam! lyrics to MASH was born. Mike Altman wrote the song lyrics in a half of hour. The soundtrack from the film sold over a million copies. Robert Altman the director, made $80,000 to direct the film, his son ,14 yr. old Mike made over 2 million and counting, every time you watch a rerun on the tv show a few cents goes to Mike Altman 50 years later that took 30 minutes of his time. Only in America!
When you click "Show more" that rundown is already there.
..or any free capitalist society.
wow, great story! never knew the genesis of the song until now! thank you so much!! 🙂
Fantastic cover: great work!
what a voice ❤
Very relaxing to listen to - thanks:))
I like this one, it's very bittersweet. I think it goes with the masonic scene in the film. I wondered what the thing was that the brave man was asking about. I thought it might be something like this current situation, but that's probably my imagination. Anyway, I heard that Robert Altman said he asked his son to come up with the most stupid lyrics possible, so maybe that's it. It sounds profound anyway.
In the description I say a bit more about the making of the text...the brave man is saying "Is it to be or not too be"...could mean anything you like! Job of the singer is to make it have some form of emotional truth.
Talking during your song video is a great way to ensure fewer fans will add it to one of their playlists since it messes with the flow of said playlist... which not only means fewer views for your video, but fans of your song won't get to enjoy it as often as they otherwise would have if it was on one or more of their playlists
Good point...might edit the intro off. It was a collaboration with our colleague Rupert and we wanted to send subscribers his way in exchange for him doing likewise...
That was lovely, it brings back memories of watching the tv show.Thank you.
❤
I was expecting good but this is on another level. Bravo amazing cover
'S wonderful
'S marvelous !
Wow wow wow - its best cover))
The final 2 1/2 hour movie of the TV series should have used a vocal version for the closing theme as a nice sendoff for the show and wrapping into the movie.
I like this 🥂
Wow. Really amazed at how great
Cool! Well done. Thanks from Milwaukee Wisconsin 🧀
Un tema en verdad muy sugestivo que nos recuerda esa magnífica película y serie tan icónica. Simplmente genial tal canción en cuestión.
Awesome at a third listen!
I like this.
It was depressing but well played!
The guy on the left looks like Father Mulcahy. I'm crying in real life.
Edit: Their left, my right.
Oh my goodness you're right! It never occurred to me but you're absolutely right!
I don't know M.A.S.H (just by the name), maybe a gap in education. I will make up for it. The song is beautiful and interesting, the melody sounds rather happy in one moment but turns soon after.
she could't be botherd to learn the lyrics beforehand?
Hello! Very glad you came by and welcome to the channel! I might offer an explanation here: we perform six songs per week, and we're now up to 600 since April 2021. That would be a LOT of memorisation. I hope that some sincerity comes across even if we do look down at the music!
@@patriciahammondsongs Your voice is superb, and the three of you capture the tenor of the song.
Great cover of a great song... but... (you know, there's always a but, right ;) ). You all did a great job to make this song even more beautiful, but my "but" is, that you are doing it way to more precisely. The sound, arrange and all is great, but it's missing something. I have a feeling, that you take it like "a digger's daily job". :-( Don't take me wrong, I like it and if it's how you feel it, then ok. Great song, great cover.
I see and hear a lot of professionalism, buuut not the passion I'd expect in song like this. Sorry.
Well I wouldn't say that, necessarily. I would say that I never do something in a way inauthentic to myself. So if someone would like more, say, 'soul' added, really, if that approach isn't authentic to me, I won't pretend it is! Each singer has themselves to give, and what you see with me is what I am. VERY fair to go to another singer for what you require, and prefer any particular singer for a particular repertoire. Perhaps for myself, you would rather Bach or something like that?
Beautiful, but you do it wrong. You need to step on it and talk over it. And do it in American!
