Does Bruce Lee Stand A Chance Against Modern MMA Fighters?

  • In today's BlueGum video we will see how Bruce lee would do against modern MMA fighters!
Bruce Lee is the greatest legend in martial arts and combat sports history, even though he never fought professionally. So, of course, the question arises: Would bruce Lee stand a chance against modern MMA fighters and how would he fare in the UFC, the largest mixed martial arts organization in the world.
Nowadays, many people think that Bruce Lee would surely lose because he was an actor and not a professional fighter. In reality however, he was more than that, after all, he basically invented MMA in the first place.

Maybe try out martial arts, people like you who think he was an actor probably never saw a gym from the inside.

If you were to pluck Bruce Lee out of time and drop him into a modern MMA match then sorry he’ll lose simply because martial arts has evolved so much since his time. However if you reincarnate him, body and mind. Allow him to train and learn modern styles and disciplines and fighters today wouldn’t stand a chance. He has the mindset and physical attributes every fighter dreams of. And for all who say he’s just an actor. Danny Trejo is also an actor but I wouldn’t pick a fight with him

    • @HipposHateWater
      @HipposHateWater 3 года назад +49

That rumor is... technically true, but phrased to be highly misleading. Why?
Because it's not specific to Bruce Lee.
That's just how movie choreography is, even with amateurs who only got two weeks of training before filming their fight scene.
Slowing down and intentionally telegraphing movement is:
      1. first and foremost, it's a valuable safety measure.
The whole point of IRL martial arts is to catch your opponent off-guard, often by acting too quickly and unexpectedly for them to react. Theatrical combat is a team effort, since it relies on two or more cooperating parties following a painstakingly constructed sequence step by step. It's easier for the actors to read each other's tells and not botch the timing of the choreographed sequence. Getting the timing wrong not only wastes time in setting up for another take, it also invites potentially serious injuries.
      2. it helps the audience more easily register exactly what is going on so that everyone is able to follow along on the first play-through, even on tiny screens or when the camera is shooting from a distance away. This is why on-screen knife-fights always involve holding their knife front and center, waving them around, often with the blade twisted unnaturally head-on towards the camera to make sure the metal glints brilliantly and menacingly. (Compare that to IRL where you would simply walk up to a target with the knife obscured at your side until it's time to shank the other dude a couple times in the groin before running away. It gets the job done, but it's anti-climactic as all fuck to watch.)

There is a video of Bruce vs Joe Lewis (formal world karate and kick boxer champion) doing a punch on a guy. Most has seen bruce's part where he knock the guy back on the chair and then the chair slides back like 5 feet. But there is one where Joe Lewis punches the guy too first, and he basically stepped back 3 to 5 steps, staying standing and stopped. And this was a time no one knows Bruce, no one wants him to look good, especially next to Joe Lewis. But no one can argue against video recorded results. I also played some bruce's video footage next to modern day fast boxers (mma fighters generally punches a lot slowers obviously) like Amir Khan, and Bruce is as fast as them easily. (I won't lie and say Bruce is 20% faster or anything) but he is just as fast if not faster sometimes. But the crazy thing is a lot of his kicks are just as fast comparing video frame by frame. No idea about Bruce's grappling, but striking, if he wants to hit you.. he is gonna hit you. I mean you had guys that spent their entire lives practice block and dodging and punching, and Bruce stands a fair distance away that requires a movement of gap closer, then a punch, and he tells them exactly where he is gonna land, and he still lands every time. I mean it's relatively easier to do a fast jab and not having the other guy able to block, but having to gap close then do it and have pros not able to block knowing exactly where he is trying to hit, that's something special. I don't see anyone replicating this even til this day.

Joe Lewis is standing with his legs next to each and if anyone does that, pushing someone over with just one finger is easy to do. There is a reason that real fighters are never caught with their legs next to each other.

Bruce Lee doesn't have to be the best martial artist in MMA to be the best martial arts philosopher in fighting history. His out of the box thinking must seem so obvious to most of us now but he's one of the only people that popularized the idea of formless form, the way of no way. For that, he is the greatest legend. I do believe he would do very well in MMA if he was in modern times.

Exactly the fact that he wasn’t a professional fighter doesn’t mean he wasn’t a legit martial artist, one respected by genuine fighters of the time. People don’t understand that Lee was a revolutionary and did something dangerous in breaking away from traditional martial arts conservatives. He modernized fighting by treating martial arts not just as a philosophy, or spiritual expression, but as a science. Jeet Kune Do developed the modernization of martial arts and the philosophical underpinnings of of modern MMA. Bruce Lee was the one who changed martial arts worldwide forever, and angered the traditional communities for it. He should be treated as the founding father of modern martial arts, because he is

It’s not about his philosophy. It’s his skills people talk shit about. When you really dismantle the argument it’s absolutely ridiculous. There isn’t anyone else that has the notes, books, documents, training schedules, wooden dummy wrapped in street metal, judo champions of the time that were over 200lbs speaking on camera how they couldn’t even touch him. He was outweighed by 50 to 100% lbs and could literally do what he wanted with these so called “champions” there are countless documented accounts, eyewitness accounts, of his skills and abilities. There is thousands of writings on him. He had a library of over 2000 books, there are photos online showing him with his books. All of them to do with unarmed
      Combat, weapons combat, philosophy.
As much as people try to discredit him there’s so much evidence supporting the narrative of his power, speed, and his skill set. There is an overwhelming amount of first hand accounts by other people who knew him. You HAVE to do your own research to find all this stuff out and it takes a long time. People like chael sonnon, joe rogan, they are all unbelievably misinformed about the guy.
You can tell the people on here who have done their research, they are reasonable people well aware of his real background. It’s very obvious the people who don’t know what they are talking about and consistently make straw man arguments. There was a guy around 50 years ago who literally changed everything to do with martial arts. His influence is EVERYWHERE. Even unrelated to martial arts. He had exceptional speed, power and skill.
There’s no need to be upset about the fact you or I can’t compare with the guy. Let it go, seriously. Whatever chip is on your shoulder that makes haters dislike him so much reeks of insecurity.
Bruce lee was a unique individual who was very intelligent, articulate and well spoken, he just so happened to be incredibly gifted and obsessed with martial arts. This combination took him to heights rarely achieved by many people. It’s not just about physical skill, it’s about being mentally in-tune with oneself and Bruce has this in abundance.

#2 Bruce Lee had fantastic philosophy
#3 Bruce Lee had FAR more time to study the Strengths & Weaknesses of LOTS of different Martial Arts. He removed the weaknesses and gained their strengths.
#4 Bruce Lee didn't just make advancements in Fighting Philosophy, but in Health. He did Protein Shakes and created his own Multivitamin stuff BEFORE it became popular.
#5 Bruce Lee studied with some of the best fighters in their respective disciplines.
#6 Bruce Lee didn't even have the advantage of HIgh Quality Tech to review fights either!! Just imagine if he could easily slow down and speed up and rewatch ALL the best fighters. If he could do that with ALL his OWN fights. With other people's fights.
Bruce Lee would have been INSANELY good. I mean this is the kind of fighter born Once in a Generation AT LEAST. If not Once in 50 Years or 100 Years.
Bruce Lee would probably have to start doing things to make fights harder on himself just so people could have a chance to defeat him.

Cool vid. I always say that this is similar in any sports. Take tennis as an example, you will see lots of comments about those pro players are 4.0s or 5.0s but what they don't realize is the filming distance, camera framerate, fisheye lens, post processing, highlight bias can easily manipulate the impression of someone's skill. In the vid I saw about bruce lee, the reason he is so good is because the insane amount of explosive power and consistency which to some people who never really fight might not be that obvious or flashy thus they undermine him. If you put bruce lee in front of you and multiple the speed you saw in the vid by 2x plus, you will see how insane Bruce lee fight, he can practically ends the fight right there for a lot of people who had slower reflexes as his kick and punch is almost instant to the opponent.

Now, I'm not sure how Lee would act during a take down or in a ground fight but I know he'll thoroughly study everything it takes to defeat his opponent in the octagon. There are videos of Bruce Lee displaying his brute strength and speed to give you a perspective on how successful he will be at studying Brazilian Jujitsu. Although, we can only speculate on how the fight goes, Bruce Lee did not gain his legendary status by just sitting around. Bruce Lee actually thought of MMA because he saw how every fighting style has their advantages and disadvantages. Notices how Lee dances around like a boxer in some videos, cause it works so he uses it. Hope this helps. :-)

Bruce Lee was an actor and a real and hardened fighter. He didn’t fight professionally or in any tournament unless he was challenged which when in the peak of his career, he was challenged many times because many people then doubted him just like today in our modern era, many doubted him and think him of just an actor that would lose in just 5 seconds. Bruce wasn’t a professional fighter because he hated all the rules, limitations and principles he had to follow in those professional fights, so he retired to street fighting where there were no rules and was the closest thing you got to MMA.
And also people are mistaking the question here. The question is does he stand a chance. Not will he win. And also why not? What’s so astounding about the possibility that a legend like Bruce Lee would stand a chance against modern UFC and MMA fighters? The key word here is legend, meaning that we don’t know much about him. So to those people who use the fact that he’s an actor to prove that he won’t stand a chance against fighters today is idiotic. If we don’t know so much about him, we can’t even begin to phantom what he can do or cannot do. So how about we all stop arguing and asking nonsensical questions like these.
How about we just appreciate his lifelong work and accomplishments to the Martial Arts World and plus, how he fought against prejudice and discrimination against the Chinese, which is another reason as to why Bruce is someone to be respected.

Bruce would be barely above average by today's standards. He also had a gym card that showed the lifts he did and how much weight. Judging by his workouts alone, Bruce was not very strong. He does not look like a champion, unless counting his demonstrations. Bruce would do great in the UFC if he practiced for it, but he was not superhuman nor unbeatable.
