In October 1980, Weather Report performed five shows in Italy. All of them featured great bass solos by Jaco Pastorius, but the song selection and variety of this one might make it my favourite. It was recorded at the second-to-last Italy date, which took place at the Palazzo dello Sport "Giulio Bigi" in Reggio Emilia, Italy, on October 27. This solo is full of interesting quotes and solo bass arrangements and is probably one of the longest solos of the tour. You might catch songs like "River People" and "Blackbird," though the most surprising of them all is The Beatles' "Fool on the Hill," which starts at 4:44. Jaco played, recorded, and quoted many Beatles songs over the years ("Blackbird," "She's Leaving Home," and "Here, There and Everywhere," to name a few), but these Italy bass solos are the only time I have heard him do anything from the Magical Mystery Tour LP. The latter half of the solo features playing to playback of Alan Hovhaness' "Symphony No. 2, Op. 132, Mysterious Mountain: I. Andante con moto," and a distortion-heavy rendition of Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze," which had both been fully incorporated into the routine at this point. The most unusual thing about this solo is probably the playback of the "Crisis" bass line, which you can hear at the end. Jaco would perform all of the Word of Mouth album live in the following years, with the sole exception being "Crisis," so hearing this, even if it's just playback, is a treat. 1980 performances of "Slang" are, in my opinion, some of the most interesting, and this is further proof of that. Weather Report continued the tour in Yugoslavia, Central Europe, Spain, and the UK, before resuming the tour in Japan the next year. Sadly, the only tapes from the late 1980 shows to surface are from a Hammersmith Odeon show, which, as good as it is, comes from the less interesting end of the tour in terms of the bass solo. www.linktr.ee/jacoarchive
It's a real slang language : he begining a theme and he stop like a conversation in a bar ; he made a solo who open the news bass players ; he was (for me) THE CREATOR of modern game on bass and he stay the best improvisator
