Jaco Pastorius - Slang (Bass Solo) [Live in Pittsburgh, 1980]
45 years ago today, Weather Report performed at the Stanley Theatre in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was the second concert of their tour of 1980, and one of five shows performed before Robert Thomas Jr. joined the group on January 24. This was reviewed by Gary Bradford for The Pittsburgh Press, which, though mostly positive, criticised Wayne Shorter's lack of prominence. (The concert also happened to take place on jazz legend and Pittsburgh native Horace Parlan's 49th birthday, but it wasn't acknowledged during the concert.)
I'll share the rest of this concert later, but first I want to focus on Jaco's 7-minute bass solo. 1980 spawned some of Jaco's best versions of his "Slang" solo bass r...

Happy New Year 2025! This year will be filled with important 40th, 45th, and 50th anniversaries for Jaco Pastorius fans, whether it's recording his self-titled debut album, joining Weather Report, or performing some of his best shows of the '80s during the Seventh Avenue South residency of 1985, and I'll be covering them on this channel through the photos, videos, and audio recordings I have in...
Darqui, Pastorius & Franks: Live in Fort Lauderdale, FL - January 29, 1978 (Newly Discovered DAT)

Late last year, I had a discussion with Florida-based musician Bob Lyons about a cassette tape that he had received from a student of drummer Rich Franks' student Jay French in February 1978. It consisted of two early 1978 recordings from the Players Club-one from January 29, and another one from an unknown, possibly earlier January date. These tapes were recorded with the trio's permission by ...
Jaco Pastorius: Live in King of Prussia?, PA - 1977? (Newly Discovered Solo Performance)

Much like the two previous years, Jaco Pastorius spent most of 1977 touring and recording with Weather Report. Despite his busy schedule, he always found time to visit his father, crooner and drummer Jack Pastorius, who by this point was living in Bridgeport, Pennsylvania. Although the details are scarce, it is likely that this cassette recording-given to Freddie Lamour Erny by his friend Jerry...

Less than a week before she would hit the stage at The Band's farewell concert The Last Waltz, Joni Mitchell, along with bassist Jaco Pastorius and percussionist Bobbye Hall, would perform at the California Celebrates the Whale concert in Sacramento, California. Half of the six Joni Mitchell originals performed were from her upcoming folk jazz album, Hejira, which would be released two days lat...

Throughout 1984, Jaco Pastorius would perform with Gil Evans and his all-star big band, the Monday Night Orchestra. The group had a residency at Seventh Avenue South in Manhattan, NYC, where they would play for up to 3½ hours every Monday, with some songs stretching as long as 40 minutes. Much of the material would stem from the 1974 tribute album _The Gil Evans Orchestra Plays the Music of Jim...

As promised, here's another video from the Jaco Pastorius Tribute Big Band's September 29 performance at Villanos del Jazz in Madrid, Spain. Like Jaco Pastorius during his big band tour of Japan in 1982, bandleader Tomás Merlo introduces "Continuum" with a short bass solo. While the Tribute Big Band performs several compositions from outside Jaco's big band catalog, this arrangement is directly...

On September 29, the Jaco Pastorius Tribute Big Band performed at Sala Villanos during the Villanos del Jazz music festival in Madrid, Spain. The group's bandleader and bassist Tomás Merlo was kind enough to send me this video of "Domingo," one of Jaco's earliest known compositions, which is every bit as fiery as the Word of Mouth Big Band performances I've heard. I'll be posting another video ...

On March 5, 1986, Jaco Pastorius would unveil his newest trio, featuring Biréli Lagrène on guitar and Thomas Böröcz on drums. The concert, which took place at the Teatro CTM in Rezzato, was taped by Italian bass player and composer Alberto Bientinesi, who was kind enough to send me the recording. The show, which opened Jaco's 1986 tour of Europe, consisted of the usual staples "Continuum," "Tee...

Today, on the 37th anniversary of Jaco's passing, I wanted to share this beautiful rendition of "Mr. Pastorius," written by Marcus Miller shortly after Jaco's death and recorded for Miles Davis' 1989 album _Amandla._ When initially presenting it to Miles, he also offered an alternate title, but Miles declined, saying "I think that's really nice to name this for Jaco." Years later, Marcus reflec...

45 years ago today, Joni Mitchell and her all-star band performed the fourth of five concerts at the Greek Theatre, and the second last concert of the tour overall. Parts of this and several other soundboard recordings surfaced online about ten years ago, which is where this is from. By this point, Jaco had been performing the bass solo routine for over two years, and while it did go through so...

Sick!
When I heard Weather Report - Black Market - for the first time (1974, I was 14), I didn’t like it much. Then few days later I had nice sounds in my head, not knowing where they were coming from.. until I remembered.
Hi, are you sure it was in 78? For me Jaco's playing is not in this area.
Yes, it's definitely from January 29, 1978, as several people connected with the recording told me. What in Jaco's playing makes you think it's not?
@@JacoPastoriusArchive His playing sounds like in his last years and i don't ear a fretless bass, maybe i'm wrong, anyway thank you for yours channel 👍
@@larry8453 Thanks! Listen to Infant Eyes.
...look de.barbaric.
This is the best version of Fannie Mae to me.
Jd beck and Domi my ♥
Wow ! Some nu Real Jaco stuff , from his prime
Linndrum..?
I think so. By the way, where did you find those Pori Jazz 1983 videos?
@@JacoPastoriusArchive I converted them from VHS tape...recorded from Finnish TV...back in day..
@@daakCable If you still have the VHS transfer, I'd be interested in trading something for the files.
The title should be GREATEST BASSIST EVER. Thank you kindly for sharing
I'm utterly blessed to have seen WR on this tour, at The Saenger, in New Orleans. Jaco and Zawinul kicked off the show by playing a high-energy improvised duet, in the dark for about 30 sec, then the lights came on and there was Zawinul on keys and Jaco behind the kit! Fantastic!
Wow, I appreciate this post and "unearthed" Jaco Pastorius treasure amd the footnotes.
Legend guitarist 🙏🍀👌🎼🎵🎶🎸✌️🌹❤️🙏
An early arranged version of this song was a version with the A string tuned down to G and played in the same key as the original "blackbird." This was taught to me a long time ago by a brilliant Japanese KORG developer and jaco researcher, Mr. Yuichi Nakahara. Amazing try at a solo arrangement in the key of the original song before it was arranged in the key of A. Thank you.
That explains it, thank you! I tried playing along, and thought the recording needed pitch correction (which it did regardless). Interesting how he did that instead of just playing it in A major.
I love "Slang" the title of the musical piece goes with the times and when it was written. Jaco was so innovative in his musical efforts, back then whatever he decided to play was in the now.
Beautiful, thanks for posting it man!
Glad you like it Tomás!
His son Felix has the thing too
Look forward to some of those 1980 weather report shows with Jocko and Robert Thomas. Thank you for posting.
You're welcome!
Thank you! keep going, you're doing important work here :)
I will, thanks! :)

I'll share the rest of this concert later, but first I want to focus on Jaco's 7-minute bass solo. 1980 spawned some of Jaco's best versions of his "Slang" solo bass routine, and this is one of the best. Unlike most, it doesn't rely quite as much on quotes and solo renditions, and is a lot less hectic overall. Much of the pre-looping doodling is centered around his version of The Beatles' "Blackbird," but even then, Jaco takes time to play with different articulations and dynamics. Some of the looping segment is missing due to a cut at 5:37, but I'm hoping a more complete tape recording will surface eventually, because it sounds really good. In spite of Jaco's declining mental health, many of the 1980 Weather Report live recordings I've heard are good, and deserve to be heard. Although I'm quite busy at the moment, I'll try to go through them, and pick and share the best bits. Please subscribe to my channel if you haven't already, so you won't miss out on anything. I'm also on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, where I share rare photos and videos, so if that's what you're into, be sure to check them out. Has anybody noticed that at 1:01:24, you can hear the line Jaco would play two seconds later? What the hell is that? Am I hallucinating?

Epic because we are talking about some of the very very greatest musicians in the history of music! This ain't for mainstream Pop fans!
I'm a mainstream pop fan 🤷
@JacoPastoriusArchive shame on you 🤣🤣
A $15 bass in the right hands is worth millions
That almost sounds like Jaco way off in the distance.
The only good thing about this is the jazz bass itself
Horrible,i love the bass from jerry only misfits ,sting buttler les claypool😊but this is not good, sorry
Good though this is in many ways, I've always found a lot of the synthesizer sounds cringy, and still do today. Nobody care, I know, but maybe I'm not alone?
