Pulling The ENTIRE Drivetrain Out The Bottom Of My $3,500 Corvette

- I bought this 2000 Chevy Corvette for just $3,500. It was driven through water and C5s love to suck it right up the intake and instantly hydrolock. The bumper design scoops the water right in. We did some quick troubleshooting, decided the car was getting an engine either way so it was time to pull it. I was going to try and pull it out the top but the Corvette guru said don't even think about it, drop everything out the bottom. Now @TheFracturedRooster, John and I are going to rip it apart in about 5 hours total.

I think it still would be interesting to tear down the old engine to see if the damage is all in the cam and valve train or the pistons or rods.
I agree
I want to see a tear down as well. The condition of the interior would be educational. LOLS
Rod bearing
I definitely want to see the damage done!
You Betcha!
You need to thank the US Air Force for loaning you one of their Top Master Sergeants to help you with this Video!!!
Josh is a great friend!
True!
I want to say you’re on a roll lately. Excellent videos and interesting stuff. Keep rocking!
Excellent comment Tim . I thought the same thing
While I do recommend removing from the bottom if you have a lift available, I pulled my C5 engine once from the top and it was pretty painless. No issues with mating the torque tube at all. Labor wise, it's about the same amount of work. Just depends on your access to a lift on which way is preferable.
*laughs in Cleetus McFarland*
I definitely wanna see a tear down of the old engine
I have such respect for how fearlessly you jump on new projects with such an extensive scope of detail as this Corvette. I never realized how extensive anything froma clutch job to an engine swap becomes. Best video ever!
Josh is such a clutch dude,he always there to help.Awsome dude, can't wait for the new motor
Doesnt him get paid?

Loving the almost daily videos. We can count on you for great content, always! It is also nice to see Josh.
Talk about fun! People really don't understand how easy it is to do major work on C5s. Definitely change out the torque tube bushings while you are in there. It is well worth the work. It really is crazy how much work you can do in so little time with them. Also, an upgraded torque converter makes a huge difference in them, too.
C5 is the easiest to work on..
Having a camera person while you work makes a huge difference 👍🏾
Ok that was beyond impressive
You know things are getting serious when Josh shows up. :) I’m looking forward to the tear down episode. 😉
I just got my first c5 and I love it!! For a older vette it's still pretty quick. You guys are brave taking it out the way you did and I give you props for that. Can't wait to see it all back together and running
I just noticed Josh hasn't been in too many videos lately..... What better video to make his return then the C5 Corvette saga.
Great video. I want to get a c5 or c6 next spring, my house will be built, and I need something for the other garage Bay. My brother is a mechanic, so much more respect for what you guys do. Way to bring that car back to life, and fun to see it taken apart like that. Learned a lot, thanks again!
I see Josh helping, you know it's gonna' be a good time...
14:27 A lot of the neutral safety switch connectors on the gm transmissions have a glue on them from the factory. All you have to do is heat them with a heat gun and they will slide right out of the switch.
I haven't done a corvette but I dropped a 944 similarly in my garage using a couple of motorcycle jacks. Used 6-ton suv jacks stacked on lumber and motorcycle jacks to lower the drivetrain.
That's was some engine pull. Congratulations
This has been quite the week of assorted wrenching. The road cases make me nervous, but I trust you. Looking forward to the following video.
Awesome video, that's a lot of parts to remember where they go back together. 👍
+1. I was thinking it comes apart easier than it'll go back together.
Really cool . JR you can never beat Experience. Having That corvette guru and Josh
Staves you from having issues and screwups. Great work everyone!
Getting better with each day , way to go J.R. I was lucky to stumble on your show a while back and thanks for keeping an old man interested.
Good to see Josh more in the channel!
Good to see Josh. When's his next video due?
Really enjoyed this. Fun to watch you guys tear into it. I would still REALLY love to see some Rolls Royce updates! I miss that car. That's how I originally found your channel!
I'd upgrade like all of it, and replace the wire harness if you can. Those old brittle wires are junk. And for an auto, at least change the rear gears too. This is going to be an amazing project for you, I'm really excited to see how it comes together, thanks for making this video!!
It's great to have the resources of great, knowlegablr friends. Good job on the Corvette so far.
Very cool to watch this. Yep, I agree, it would be interesting to see the the old engine come apart
I missed watching this last night. I love watching this before sleeping
I would really like to see what is wrong with that engine. Great Job JR!
A video released during the day?!? Sweet. Something to entertain during my endless meetings.
You know it’s serious when our LS whisperer’s John and Josh are on the scene.
Can't believe you did that in 5 hours. Amazing.
It's crazy to watch them do it at the factory. The body comes in from the ceiling on one conveyor and the powertrain on another from the ground and neither ever stops moving. It takes about 45 seconds.
I'd bet now that JR knows what he needs to do that he can do the next one in half the time.
Love your content everytime. A little disappointed we are not going to see the original engine fixed 🥺
Awesome video! Great job, would recommend doing a torque tube rebuild as well while you have the whole drivetrain out! Would hate to see ya have a torque tube problem after pulling that entire drive train and then putting in a new engine!
Manual swap time.
NEVER 😂
you know it’s gonna he a good vid when josh is involved!
Incredible. You make it seem so simple.
Hopefully John and Josh both will be here when you put the new engine in the car. You definitely need them. That looked very tedious getting it out.
'Sucked in a little water' = USED AS SUBMERSIBLE
Basically if you can get water over the front bumper, the engine is gone on these... a guy bought my tan C5 and did the same thing in a big rainstorm 😬
Who's the U-boat Commander?
Very cool. Still hoping you crack that thing open to see what's what inside!
I'm really enjoying this project! Please pull the old engine down & find out what happened. It should be a lot of fun when you get the hot new engine installed. Keep up the great work!!
Awesome episode. I am curious to what is wrong with the engine. If possible , teardown the engine and show the problem. If it is an easy fix, drop it into the Extreme..... More please!
We were waiting for this episode lol Keep them coming!
24:00 In 2009, at the age of 58, I woke up at 4:30am one morning and said, "I'm going to build a car." Not having any auto mechanical experience was going to be daunting but when I make up my mind....................! I didn't start by taking the body off a VW Beetle and installing a dune buggy body, I started at the Top.
To make a very long story short, I bought a Cadillac XLR drivetrain and suspension, turned the drivetrain into a mid-engine setup by cutting and welding together the torque tube bell housings, (Like I said, LONG story), and bolted the very long package to a fiberglass/honeycomb monocoque tub and turned it into a modern Formula One Car, for the street. That bell housing has to be exactly 6". That includes the 1/4" play you need for the torque thingy. You know, that thing that looks like a cheese wheel.
All that was incredibly hard to do when you do it alone and don't even know what the parts are called. A Clutch Slave? What the heck is that? Summit Racing? Who are they? "Hey, where is the race car suspension store?" Don't even get me started about wiring!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. There was also the aluminum tube chassis and fiberglass body I made for that package to replicate the Porsches 917K and also a steel tube chassis and twin Subaru 6-cylinder engines to make a 12-cylinder boxer engine for the Porsche 917/10 Can Am Car that I still have. Yes, I actually did get it running, sort of.
I low-key love that the Porsche is still the daily.
One of the best vids I’ve seen you do.
Your camera guy is doing a great job!
Excellent content John Ross. Can't wait to see it go back together
once you get this engine fixed and back in, you should install a snorkel on the intake, just to make sure that the engine never gets flooded again.
LMAO, go ahead and lift it too 😂
@@WatchJRGo Good Idea, 4X4 Monster Vette!!!
OR.. ya know.. just don't drive it into water.
This was super cool to watch!!! Can’t wait to see what you have in store for the new engine…😈
Dang, I wanted to see this rebuilt. You know what you have vs "running when removed"
Josh is a machine!!
JR is really fast working on vehicles.
3:50 I thought you are going to say Josh is pulling out his shoulder 😅 stay safe guys. Strong work! :D
3.73 gears and a stall converter would make that bad boy quick!
With being this far into it and waiting for a engine, might as well go through and check for anything that needs to be fixed or replaced throughout the rest of the car, suspension, etc. 🤷♂️
Tell Josh we're missing him on Broken Rooster
I'm loving these midday video releases...
Wow y'all made that look easy, but of course it wasn't, great work 👍🏾
This is definitely an interesting project so far!
Wow what a huge job good series ! JRGo
Your content gets better and better.
Looking forward to the reassembly.
What a job, but you guys seem to think that it will go back together will no sweat. I hope so, cause I am ready to see what you are putting into this, Bigs ups to Josh and the Vette guru! It helps to have friends.
Once again hardest working man in RUclips // Jacksonville Florida
Thanks again for showing us what it takes to pull an engine out of A C5 I plan on doing the same thing not myself but a dealer to pull my motor to upgrade I see what it's going to take thanks so much .😎
Have you considered backing your vehicles onto the lift when doing front-end work? You'd have a lot more space
If his lift is anything like mine, the shape of the arms and their length make lifting in reverse a bit precarious. It is harder to get the weight balanced correctly
WOW what a tare down project - looking forward to the next reveal and your HP gain engine.
Looking forward to see you it together again.
Josh we are missing some fractured rooster!!
DAMN,, CHANGE those STOCK GM C5 Shocks. Get some GM C6 ZO6 Shocks. One for one bolt in up-grade! You will be amazed at the improvement in high speed handling and they are relatively inexpensive . Great BANG for the BUCK! I have an 02 ZO6 and I can feel EVERYTHING you are experiencing! LOL! Been there done that...🙂 Good luck my brother.
Wow had no idea it was set up like that!
If the battery is unhooked, for all that is holy, where is that door dinging coming from? Haha
Josh's truck was getting new tint on the other side of the shop 😂
@@WatchJRGo it's crazy how once you hear it, you just can't not hear it. Lol
where did you buy the corvette?
looks like it sucked up water in the intake and hydro locked and bent a rod...
but I'm not a mechanic .
Nice shop by the way.
Thanks rainman yeah road cases are definitely solid yeah definitely
I am really invested in this corvettes outcome
I wonder what the car ninja would think of your engine removal table, i mean table's lol.
I remember seeing an episode on one of those Power Block shows that was on Spike tv where they turbocharged a vette like that . The kit had the turbo I. The back behind the taillight and had metal piping running back up to the throttle body . They said it didnt even need an intercooler. You ought to do something like that to this vette.
Why have you stopped using the oil sucker 2000? With VGG you have the best content on YT. You should be at 250K per episode. Love the channel.
You know people say the C5 is not a good looking car, but I love the look tbh.
I look for your videos everyday. You make it seem possible, not easy, but possible.
I'm not sure if you talked about it, but have you considered changing the torque tube bushing while you have it out?
Milkshake from blown head gasket? Cracked hear or cracked block. did previous owner hydraulic the motor? Try to turn over with cylinder full of liquid and bend rod? Damage bearings?
It was driven into water and hydrolocked. 🍻
I have the exact same jack handle that I use for a breaker bar.
Nicely done, love your efforts!
This looks like so much fun ! Hope you have a good one 👍
Done the strip out in the shed with Jack's , not that bad a job. Are you going to do an autopsy on the old ls1.
I did my LS7 in my garage with gojacks. Splines were a pain and needed the metal clutch alignment tool. Did it solo. Can be done just not fun and takes long to do
Great video, you guys are amazing
Another great video man! lovin it lately
You need a Jack Table take all engines out the bottom so much easier?
Thank you for all your hard work content
This whole time I was thinking, “Man Cleetus makes this looks easy.”
Cleetus is a pro
I mean, they've dropped that engine so much they are experts at it.
You should take the ford dump truck, and jake's super special pt cruiser, and do a mile race. I would have liked to see you race him in the water world vette, but to late. Jake has the boost going on that rig, i just wanted to see if it could possibly beat another car, since he was testing on it after doing some repairs. Whoever owned that car was a boomer, and they parked that car in the winter for it to be so clean underneath of it. I have never seen anyone do the body mods on a pt cruiser like the stuff on jake's, it is hilarious, but jake look's perfect driving it lol. Please do a video with him, it would be hilarious. I like this vette, except for it being white, because it's a boring color, are you thinking of doing a wrap, that would be cool, just to see it being done, and how much work is involved in doing a wrap. Thanks for another great video.
Ruby‘s motor has always come up from the top I’ve never seen them pull up from the bottom.
If Hoovie had bought this car he would be loosing cash out of the wazoo, but JR grabs his tools and makes it look easy.
I really hope there's a chance of some _Vamonos Pest_ stenciling on those road cases...
When you do these project I would like to see a time lapse of the clock if at all possible.
Either that tire was overinflated(alot of people think the maximum pressure is where they should be) or the tire is too wide for that wheel
