this piece was commissioned for Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in WW1. him and Ravel fell out because Wittgenstein changed the piece by quite a lot and Ravel was very angry when he first heard it performed due to all of the changes that Wittgenstein made. they eventually made up and Wittgenstein agreed to perform the concerto as it was originally written

Back in my youth there was a classical music TV show that used the opening of this as its theme. I'm always thrilled by the grandeur of the orchestral exposition.

Incredible, an indisputable masterpiece by one of the great musical minds

This is an incredible piece - there are a few pieces for the left hand from this period because of a few pianists with limb loss from the First World War. I am a bassoonist and contrabassoonist and have had the good fortune to play that opening solo for the contrabassoon a few times. It is always a magical experience- and so impressive to hear a pianist play this amazing work

Most of the frequently-performed left-hand piano pieces in the repertoire were composed between 1920 and 1950 for a single pianist, Paul Wittgenstein, who as someone else already mentioned had lost his right arm in WWI. Ravel, Prokofiev, Richard Strauss, Britten, Hindemith, and Korngold, among many other composers, all wrote music for Wittgenstein, though he didn't perform all of it.

Another great reaction, I knew Gidi'd like it. And so different from his other Piano Concerto. Ravel really tries to paint the illusion of 2 hands. (I also recommend his Daphnis and Chloë, version with Choir.)

Always a pleasure when we're reacting to one of the great piano concertos. More recommendations for the Left Hand alone? Scriabin Prelude and Nocturne op. 9, Felix Blumenfeld Etude op. 36, and my favourite, Bach/Brahms Chaconne in D Minor also for the left hand alone. There is an amazing live performance by Daniil Trifonov here on RUclips, if you want to react to it.

Another great piece for left hand is Bortkiewicz's 2nd piano concerto, you should give it a listen! (tbh all three of his concertos are amazing)

You should react to Beethoven sonata 23! The "Appassionata." The 3rd movement is probably the best movement out of any of the sonatas in my humble opinion, I just feel like you haven't truly experience classical piano until you've listened to the Appassionata.

If you haven’t already, you should listen to Beethoven “Pathétique” piano sonata no. 8. The second movement is perhaps more beautiful than his moonlight sonata.
