Hey RUclips - for the next video - what do you want me to cover ? Please leave requests and suggestions below!
I’ve been in one that’s been doing hammerheads, lol. They are by far my favourite machine. Although the civilian Kiowa I was in could lift more, in the hands of an expert musterer, the 500 was unbelievable! Loved them 👊🏾👌🏾👍🏽
would you be OK if you hit a drone or a bird?
Andy Tutton -hello- thanks for the comment- depending where the bird / drone struck , it could cause catastrophic damage - there is a video of a 500 that gets hit by a drone whilst following some dune buggies- the helicopter lands safely - but if it were to hit a critical component - say a pitch change rod on the main rotor or disable the tail rotor, the outcome may be less favourable . Certainly- if it hit the pilot, it might also incapacitate him/ her- leading to an unsuccessful flight
How about sightseeing over some British landmarks?
Michel Gigault good idea - in the mean time, you might like this guide to flying over London,

I have watched this video dozens of times, and it is as great, watching it today, as it was 3 years ago.....

The MD500E is by far my favourite helicopter, I went up in one 25 years ago and it was awesome! Loved helicopters ever since!
Very nice machine, comfortable pilot, beautiful landscape. Doesn't get much better. I don't often wish for what others have.
Thanks for bringing us along.
Great sound, gave me goosebumps.
The 500's are badass!, I play the lotto constantly for one reason the only thing on my bucket list is owning and flying a MD500E before I leave this world!. Great video!.
Hi Steve ! Thanks for the comment- glad to hear that my videos are proving some inspiration. I hope you get that experience soon, as they are great fun to really fly dynamically !
Inspiring professionalism sir. Many thanks.
I LOVE "G-UMBY" Awesome Vid! THANKS for sharing!!!
ninthfloor33020 I noticed that too. GUMBY!
Another excellent AB Helicopters Ltd video
KM Brandt
How much is that one
Its great
Nicely flown!
Great flying
thank you!
Great video! Nice copter!
Love your helicopter, one of my all time favorite’s. Sports car of the sky. Thank you for making these videos, really enjoy them.
Thanks for the feedback , glad that you like the videos !
Was on the controls in a D - Model 4 Blades T - Tail comming from Bell 47 D it was just overwelming - awesome this Ship !
Werner Wiedon FYI, both MD500E and the MD500D have a 5-bladed main rotor and a T-tail. It's the 500 & 500C that have 4 blades and a V-tail. The 500E has the more pointed nose shape, although it can be retrofitted to earlier models as a modification.
Tom....is that you?!
😂, seriously tho, that was beautiful.👍
beautifull place...
Another great video, Your MD-500E must be very stable in flight as I notice you do not have your hand on the collective very much during level flight. My first flight was in a 500C, I have always had a love of the Hughes & MD helicopters.
The aircraft is very stable once it has been trimmed - there is a collective friction that holds the collective nicely
Very nice ship awesome taking off !
Thank you!
It's like i was flying also with you sir! The video was so great.
Thanks for the feedback
Love the Registration: GUMBY.
Ive seen one with the name: GULPY

Thank you
Thanks 4 sharing !!
Thank you - let us know if you have any questions
I love the MD 500e It looks awesome
It flies fantastically too!
Anymore 500 videos coming in the near future? Love watching this particular video.
We just uploaded one last week, and I am working on a new one at the moment, documenting a flight back from France to the UK
Nice looking chopper!
Awesome
Glad you enjoyed the video!!
How different is it with the PIC seat being on the opposite side to which one drives? I have always love the turbine whine of these birds. Great video! Great piloting ! I now want one....
Hi there ! So in instructing you get used to swapping between left and right- plus/ the cyclic and collective are on the same sides - irrespective of if you are on the left or the right - unlike in driving !
Wonderful 🚁!!!! 👍🏼🤙🏼
Little fun-fact: in England all car-driver sitting on the right side & this pilot prefer the left seat. 😬😉
Nice flight thanks
Thanks for the feedback- lookout for our next 500 video in the next week - flying from France to the UK
I was able to log about 1/2 an hour in a loach. Thankfully, my commander authorized it. Had a blast with 1/4 tank of gas and two 180 pound pilots. The PIC was an IP.
The 500- or 369/OH-6 is a great heli to fly- and it’s flying qualities still hold up today - it doesn’t even have (or need) hydraulic boosted controls!
Great little helicopters. I've never had the chance to fly in one but I did build and assemble the fuselage for a couple of years in Mesa, AZ. Was a fun job
Very crash resistant! Not that we plan to test it
AB Helicopters Ltd
Haha yeah man it’s got the strongest A frame in a helicopter and a collapsible pilot seat box.
Always reassuring!
Did you ever get any pics during the build?
@@ABHelicopters
I may have a couple but technically we were not supposed to be taking any pictures of the fuselage during its manufacture because we were in the middle of a big military contract with Afghanistan for a 150 or so aircraft. We built FF models, which are just F models with weapon systems and modifications. We did do onesie-twosie private sales so for example we built an E model for some foreign police and also a NOTAR model for some rich guy.
Magnificent 🥰😍💯👍🚁🥰
Glad to hear that you enjoyed it !
Thnx for the ride in the jumpseat man.
Pleasure- anytime!

LOVE this little bird ever since the Lorch’s and TC’s 500C (& later MD500D) in “Magnum PI”. I love how they sound, how nimble they are and how they look. You are a lucky guy! What would you say are the pro’s and con’s of this series helo vs other turbine civilian helos?
Don’t know why RUclips did this, sorry this comment was for another video ref my old NavAir years......
Hi Dominique, thanks for the note- they are fantastic aircraft to fly- very stable which is good instrument flight and cruising accidentally and yet incredibly manoeuvrable, with a rotor head design that removes some of the risks of ‘mast bumping’ associated with the Bell Huey/205 , Jetranger and the the R-66. It is also a very quick heli -the Vne (max speed) is 156kts (152kts in the E model)
It is really a pilots helicopter- the major draw back of the aircraft is the passenger proposition in the rear - due to the install angle of the engine - about 37 degrees - the main rotor transmission input shaft sits between the rear passengers- so headspace is limited!
AB Helicopters Ltd - I guess RUclips routed my comment here after all. 😎 I flew in Sea Kings (ASW/SAR Airman) in the US Navy. Nice big stable reliable helo but not sporty. A Royal Navy Lynx came aboard our Carrier one day and we were all drooling! I seriously wanted to switch services. In 89 I took a ride in a Bell 47G at Badlands NP, South Dakota. It was the 2 seater and the pilot was ex- US Army. We reminisced and when we got to a remote area he told me to “watch this”. From @ 2k AGL he pushed over hard until we were lookin straight down at the badlands through that big bubble canopy. I loved every second of it (and was very aware of mast bumping) but he skillfully re-loaded the disc and recovered). Other than that as I said I’ve always gravitated to the 500C & D from that era. I can’t fly anymore (always intended to add an “H” to my PPL) but kidney failure and transplant nixed my medical. Someday I will catch a ride in one of these sweet whirlybirds. Thanks for your reply!
Sounds like you have a real background with helicopters! Sea kings are great platforms , the Lynx is quite impressive as an aircraft that held the speed record (admittedly it was stripped out and not you standard in service aircraft!) As your experience (and others that I know of) demonstrate that mast bumping can be an issue, if you know what to expect and how to recover, is not automatically an accident situation! Sorry to hear about your medical issues, hopefully you will still be able to jump in with an instructor and still get some 'stick time'.
este si me encanta el MD500E la semana que biene me compro uno.
It's great to get you back in the MD500 next month and I can't wait to see how you do my friend and it's well worth the wait and I have been doing well
You look like my little brother! Great vid, great helicopter. Btw, what was the music used? I kinda was digging the jam 😊
Thanks for the feedback! I’ll get back to you on the tune!
Sorry for the delay in replying it’s
‘Keys to the kingdom’ by the ‘126ers’
How old is this helicopter?!? And it's still to this day my favorite looking especially with 4 main blades. Love the color and graphics on this one!
The original OH-6 came out in the 60’s- this aircraft was build in the late 80’s
Since I can't afford to own the real thing here is the closest I'll get...
ruclips.net/video/lPQgrmwL0QE/видео.html
That is a well-balanced main rotor.
I KNOW, I was watching the start-up waiting for the shimmy...…..nothing !
Nice video & a safe flight. Why are ya flying without your left hand on that collective flight control???
@C Brock "Collective twist" is in responce to the motorcycle type engine throttle twist grip. There is a "friction control" knob on the collective flight control lever, but not a collective twist lock.
Beautiful transition mate lovely helicopter these. Great on so many levels, I would love to have a go in one... Seems like an R22 on steroids?
Hi Chris,
Thanks for the comment and glad that you enjoyed the video . Yes the 500 is a great helicopter to fly, in some respects there are a lot of similarities, both are very ‘hands on’ , old school mechanical helicopters, no hydraulic, the 500 is incredibly manoeuvrable, (not great for people in the back with the position of the transmission system!), but lots of excess power
Wow
Very nice paint job!
You're kidding, right?
Tim Parter I like the all white😆
Until you have to clean it.
You reckon? Is this because of the soot from the exhaust?
Yup.
Muito obrigado Brasil
Next month we will do it together! I'll ride in the back seat and watch you and then I'll move up to the rightseat and I'll get my recurrent also in the MD500 and after that we are going to have a landing competition on who's the smoothness on controls
Oh yeah. What was the name of that music? I shazamed, and "Sound Hounded" it and there were NO close matches. :-( Great track!
+ninthfloor33020
Thanks for the comment and support. The music is called 'keys to the kingdom' by the '126ers'
AWESOMENESS!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Listening to it NOW!
In the MD 500 series helicopters the pilot always sits in the left seat (unlike other helicopters) because the engine start switch is only on the left collective.
Correct!
Also partially because the md500 has a 5 Seat config - with the 3rd person up front - and 2 in the back. In this config, the collective has to be on the left hand side - else the passenger would sit on it
Nice looking bird
It is immaculately maintained by a team at Sywell airfield , Northamptonshire, UK
is this double seater or single? and can this helicopter can stay one place in sky?
Hi Gary- the heli is a 4 seater - though certified for 5. It can hover out of ground effect at altitudes up to 6000ft
I make that taking off somewhere in Wilts or Gloucs, routing over Oxfordshire past Abingdon airfield, overflying Benson then on to Elstree. Almost flew over my house.
Very close David - ended up at Denham
@@ABHelicopters Why the orbit as you approached the M40? Traffic?
Honesty - I can’t quite recall- it may have been because I was doing an orbit to allow the R44 that had dropped me off - to catch up with me!
Gotta wonder if the next helicopter innovation MAY evolve from under sea explorations.
How much to buy one of these on the 2nd hand market? Every time i see one of these all I think of is Magnum PI! Even though his was the older Hughes 500 variant it's just as awesome!
Looking between 800- 1.2 million usd for a good one - but the earlier ones with the C18 engine go cheap - 400k of so
@@ABHelicopters Thanks a lot
👍👍
You have flown in different types of Helicopters but overall what's your favorite
The 500 is definitely up there! But I would love to fly a Huey !
The manual would be nice to have so I can know more so when I'm seated in the right seat with you I'll be prepared
Let me know your email address and I’ll ping it over !
Hello friend just letting you know that where is the MD500? I need to get recurrent with you again
Hi Bernard- hope you are well? Sorry for no more MD500 videos recently - though put a couple of pics up of some on our Instagram account - if you have it. Actually have my own annual recurrency on the 500 coming up next month so should be able to get some footage soon !
They sound awesome, dont see too many though.
Often can hear them from a few miles away, from the rather distinctive , if not slightly noisy, tail rotor !
Do you get grumpy preflighting a R44 after a flight in this? ;)
Each aircraft has its own strengths and weaknesses- that said - I always get excited about flying the 500! It’s special
Just wondering, does that model of the MD500 have some sort of a collective lock? Saw him flying with both hands on the cyclic.
Yes there is a collective friction at the base of the collective on the left hand side
Yah. Seems very weird to fly from left seat solo!
My only complaint about the MD500 is that the windows are too small....
Not so good in the back!
Молодец парень. По памяти запуск и опробование, летает по карте, и музыка хорошая. Профессионал настоящий.👍
The ID "GUMBY" lmbo
Do you normally fly solo from the left seat?
+William Eudy - the civil version of the 500 is flown from the left- the starter button for example is only on the left collective
Can the starter button be relocated to the right collective? Much safer to fly right seat! Thanks for a great video!
TC!!
AB helicopters..? Where are you at Alex
This dude spends 90% of his times with his eyes inside the cockpit. Dangerous way to fly.
Would like to ask. Why is the pilot flying on the left side ? Many other helicopter they're sitting on the right.
Great question- the 500 is build as standard with the captain on the left - in this set up, controls can be on the right , but you can’t shut down the engine for example, as there is a throttle lock on the left collective stick only. This set up makes it better for vertical reference work, with the pilot leaning out the left hand side, only leaning over the collective
@@ABHelicopters that's mean full control is all from the left hand side ?
The full controls are set up from the left hand side as standard . I believe there is a factory option to move the full set to the right hand side but that is not the standard
@@ABHelicopters oh I see. But still we can fly from the right seat even the cyclic and collective removed ?
what is the minimum time between engine start and take off ?
Depending on if the aircraft had flown in the last 15 minutes- means if you have to wait 2 minutes for the temperature to stabilise at idle . If it has flown recently - you can be airborne within 4 minutes of start
thanks for the answer. :)
Ask away on any questions - happy to help where I can!
4WDの車を停めてあるように、そこにはMD500が停めてありますね。
違いは前に進むか、上に飛ぶか、ですね!
I'm looking to see how well we can do so to move side to side the cyclic tilts the main rotor disk left and right swash plate to introduce my rate or direction and I see how well you did
I have a retired Army MD LITTLE BIRD I am am almost finished working on.
Awsome! And pics you can share ? Lucky you
What's the cost of this copter?
It’s in the order of £850k
The MD500E is in fact a very fine little Helicopter. However, Helicopters should be piloted from the right seat. Reason = The Pilot should never take his/her hand off the cyclic at any time. This video demonstrates what happens when the Pilot uses his knees to hold the cyclic while adjusting the GPS screen and other instruments; a less than straight and level flight. The collective, used by the left hand, has a friction device to prevent it from moving, allowing the Pilot to use his left hand to make minor instrument adjustments without altering his flight path & stability of the Helicopter. Some prefer to Pilot from the right seat but, we were trained to fly from the right seat only from day one for both safety reasons and total control of the Helicopter. Not trying to be a smart a$$, just pointing out a better way to fly from experience :)
Hi PV- thanks for the post. The MD is a bit strange in that it is set up for left seat flying - there is no starter button on the right hand side dual controls for example. You are right about the friction lock on the collective , however the 500 doesn’t have hydraulics for the controls and hence there is a trim hat on the top of the cyclic which is used to remove control forces in Flight - which means once it is trimmed - it can almost be flown ‘hands off’ - (not that I am suggestive that be a good idea) but it means you can then re tune radios etc without loosing control or crudely just holding the cyclic between knees .
Hope that helps
Thank you Sir for the constructive feed back. I am "old school" and had it burned into me to always fly right seat for many reasons :) With over 6,000 hrs in Helicopters and 42,000+ total hrs, it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks LOL! I must admit, your Helicopters do look like very fine Aircraft.
Not a problem- always good to get constructive comments and I would usually agree with your feedback! I believe it is due the civil aircraft being designed with 5 seats- ie the front seat a bench for 3 people- which requires the collective to be on the left away from any passengers . In real life I have only ever seen 4 seat versions!
"Progress" I think they call it.... ARGGG! I started out in a Bell G9 with the big glass bubble and open tail boom (like the ones they flew in the TV show M.A.S.H.) (too many years back to admit :). I now own & fly a fully restored UH-1C with the 1,400 HP turbine and full digital Garmin 1000 glass cockpit panel. Better than the new ones they gave us in 'Nam. Much tighter and more responsive, much closer tolerances after we did a full restoration from the skids up. I think I will stick with the two front seat Helicopters with the right hand Pilots seat :) It just doesn't feel 'natural' for me to sit in the left seat! Too old to change now! I would be anxious to see the 3 place front seat Helicopters, out of curiosity. Seems like they would have to drastically offset the instrument panel to the left to benefit the Pilot. Again, many thanks!
I would love to fly a Huey ! Do you use it for sling work or ag? Sounds a great aircraft - does that bring it up to H model standard engine wise (though with a shorter cabin obviously )
Do you like left side or right side piloting best?
+Tony Merlot - as an instructor - I fly predominantly from the left seat- so when it comes to the 500 - which is set up (in the civil world) with captain on the left- the starter button and idle cut off collar is only on the left collective - so I have got used to that. That said, it does take a bit of time to get used to swapping seats at the beginning.
I've heard theres a world shortage of helicopter pilots? Here's a question I think already know the answer to. But here goes: is the industry interested in a 50yr old helicopter pilot wanting to work? I've fixed wing PPL. Always wanted to fly helicopters.
Where are you based Tim?
Ie - uk , us etc ?
I'm based in Malta now. Originally from UK. Trained fixed wing at biggin hill. Plan to return again to UK though
Depends what you want to do- the training market in the uk is always busy enough - the North Sea is picking up - bristow are doing a pilot open day this month, though remember the 60/66 year old limit for commercial flying - different with instruction
The helicopter market is less ‘stable’ than the fixed wing commercial / airline world - and on the whole - paid less - worth bearing in mind when reviewing the cost of training for a CPL, FI and or Multi engine IR
Your sales in md 500 helicopter
Very nimble aircraft. Used in many movies for stunts. From what I understand it can be very touchy.
shakenama
So can a high performance sports car...
Touchy? Very manoeuvrable !
It will be well worth the wait because I need to get caught up on my Hot starting Procedures in the 500
It's all in the wrist and staying focused way out in front of you at anytime and I'll get my chance to fly the MD500 at $500 hour operation cost
Sounds like a great opportunity to fly the 206
Unfortunately due to fly the 500 this morning but it got cancelled at short notice
No audio?
Hi Ralph, thank you for pointing this out to me- I have changed the settings on RUclips now- should see the changes in an hour or so. Also standby for a longer version with ATC etc that I will post this weekend,
Thanks

+Ralph Madera - audio back on now !!!
Trank you, I really enjoy your videos, I hope to watch them more often!
What do clients hire you for ?💰🚁
In terms of what jobs do we do?
I know this is old but, no music needed if anything next time include some Jet-A smell coming out of the speakers
Hi Tony - thanks for the comment - there is a no music version available as well,

Can send you the md500e Flight manual if you want?
A very interesting nose shape....the pilot, not the aircraft!
Not sure how to respond to that !

Of all the Best flying is in a Bell 206 jet Ranger flight years ago but unfortunately when I first saw and got a great opportunity to fly with a owner of a MD500 that I couldn't say no too and he sad you got the controls so fly
you burnt that nice grass with your exhaust.
A downside of the 500- the exhaust sits low compared with other turbines - fortunately this aircraft is on high skids - else there would be an enhanced fire risk
Fantastic looking aircraft and a lovely calm evening. Who could ask for anything more?
I'll never get to the UK to fly with you in the MD 500
