That house didn't look all that old.
But I'm all for intensification, many older 60s 70s homes have been demolished in my area of Auckland and many town houses quickly replacing them. Unfortunately some are uglier then the building that came down before them, with extreme eyesore random mix mash of cladding systems, the vertical zebra stripes seems to be the trend. don't get me wrong I like a verity of cladding on a building, but maybe a wall in brick and the rest weather board or cylinder block ground level and the rest shiplap cider.

Labour costs have skyrocketed. To keep things within budget the quality of materials (with faster installation times) typically goes down and that all contributes to these eyesores.

On this job in particular the house wasn't old, but near impossible to work with in getting another lot on the property, there was some serious time and consideration put into all the options at the design stage and it ended up in the too hard basket,

The system is set up. We recycle up to 99% of structures (Watch the Demo of Alexandra Park on our Channel for example). Our Concrete Yard in Onehunga recycles 100% of a structures concrete into re useable aggregate. We also take Demolition/ Construction waste and can recycle on average 75% of the materials. The main issues we find is the use of Polystyrene in Construction. Interesting video though. We're only mildly offended that we're labeled Evil :( haha

In your defence... Wellington is far behind Auckland when it comes to recycling. Our Wellington based team do their best, but often clients will pick the cheaper option as recycling in Wellington is a lot more costly. For larger projects we crush the concrete onsite to be reused back into the foundations (Imperial Tobacco)

You could have had people off Facebook Market place come and pick it apart. Yes, it takes effort but imho don't call demo 'necessary', it's about the dollars pure and simple.

1:39 yeah the stove/oven is still in there. Curtains were still up. Windows & bathroom sink unit still in good nick. Surely these and a lot of other chattels could have been stripped out before the demo?

Its a tough one Pete / Toby
      a) If the owner doesn't have the time or inclination to deal with it, and
      b) the demo company who probably does one of these jobs a day doesn't have time / space / resources
then what is one to do?
also where does all this stuff end up while it waits for someone to decide if they might have a use for it,

@@nzbuilder I hear you and have been down this path myself. It's a decision just like throwing McDonalds wrappers out the window. I'm not blameless when it comes to waste, we both know how much a build creates.
I'd say the litmus test is 'Knowing what I now know could I do better or something differently?' Simple yet powerful question.

UPDATE: I was speaking to the owner about this today and it turns out they had quite a few items on trade me / Facebook market place for about 3 weeks - the turnaround between boarder moving out and demo company turning up,
several items were sold or given away but unfortunately they struggled to find interest in other items,
