    I haven't owned a microwave oven in about 20 years. It may be true that they are safe, but I just don't like the way food tastes after being in one. Also, one time our kettle was broken and we tried making tea with water heated in the microwave - it made the tea taste really strange. I don't know if this is a health issue or just a taste issue, but I just like the taste better of food and beverages made the old-fashioned way.

    When I was a chef in a 5 star retirement community in the 90's the government inspectors could fine us for eggs in the microwave.

    • @desertsoldier41
      @desertsoldier41 3 года назад +4

      They effect electrons less than visible light which has a higher frequency and shorter wavelength. Microwaves are even less powerful than infrared. The wavelength of microwaves is a few mm, Visible light is 1E-3mm in length, so a microwave will just bounce off matter and wont strip electrons. That impact causes kinetic energy and raises its blackbody temperature with repeated strikes, but it cannot liberate the Weak Nuclear force like UV, Xray and Gamma.

    I have no opinion on microwave ovens, and cell phones, and wifi routers etc,...but why is there so many unusual cancers today? I asked my elderly neighbor if all these cancers were this common in the 30's,40's and 50's, and she said no. That kind of matches what I thought about growing up in the 60's.

    • @InvalidUser_
      @InvalidUser_ Год назад

      Its because of plastic mostly. Chemicals from plastic leak into our foods and cause alot of harm. Currently there are microplastics everywhere such as in the rain and air. These cancer causing chemicals have never been in humans previously and can spread to other generations. Another reason is the amount of nuclear bomb tests that happened between the 40's and 80's which spread radioactive material throughout the soil globally and has had a considerable mark on atmospheric radiation.

  • @Dan-uf2vh
    @Dan-uf2vh 5 лет назад +28

    "radiation" is out of the question, but what if you damage or alter the nutrients in the food? also heating is super localized, so it's possible to overheat some parts of the food in ways as to produce carcinogens, just as you might in any other way that heat up food to ludicrous temperatures.. heating is not done uniformly and excess heat builds up in small places

    • @swansong5960
      @swansong5960 5 лет назад +8

      I believe you dont fully understand how thermodynamics apply in this situation.
      Heating in the common household setting will never be exactly uniform, but using radiation (microwaves) is probably the closest option. I say this because; under the perfect conditions the microwaves can penetrate evenly and excite the water molecules without discrimination. (Hence why its commonly stated that microwaves cook from the inside out). Whereas using the process of conduction ie. an oven, is far from uniform. Through this method the the heat has to pass outwards in through the hot, dry air. This is also why you get crusts in an oven but it will be soggy in a microwave because the air is at room temperature; except not quite due to steam ofcourse. If carcinogens are your concern then I'd be far more worried about other cooking methods like ovens and frypans. Hot water baths are probably the best option for less carcinogens.
      As for your nutrient query, you raise a great question. I dont have enough resource materials for you but this may help.
      Just remember to use your truly analytical sense when reading any studies and journals though, most have slight flaws and lack some valuable information.

      And again you go outside under the sunlight which carry also visible light which is both higher frequency than infrared and microwave and also exposed yourself with UV which is higher frequency and dangerous from the sun. But yeah, you feel that microwave is dangerous alters nutrients which is way less than cooking normally.

    The only possible danger from microwaves is while it is turned on (if microwaves escape the box and hit you). Microwaves are a wavelength of light, that's it. People who think their food is poisonous after heating in a microwave need to realise that when you turn off a flashlight, everything goes dark. Same for a microwave, since it IS light. Other than that, everything he said is true for how it cooks the food and how it doesn't change anything in the quality of the food.

      As a radio technician I can tell you that microwaves are fine. They are only dangerous while running and only because they can heat you up and burn you like they do your food.
      But look at your microwave, you see the metal screen or weird looking glass(the glass has suspending metal fragments)? That is basically a faraday cage. It keeps all the microwaves from escaping the machine due to the waves frequency not being able to pass through the holes.
      Microwaves are perfectly safe as long as they are built correctly.
      Even if you have a cheap shitty Chinese made knockoff brand microwave with no Faraday cage that somehow slipped through inspection, you are only in danger of being heated up or burnt and you will very quickly feel too hot and want to run out of the room. If you have never felt this way then your microwave is in perfect working order.
      We use the same concept as an anti personnel weapon for large crowds, point microwaves at people and heat them up and they basically feel like they just ran five miles while wearing sweaty clothes and their body begins to try and release extra heat by vomiting.
      We also know these symptoms to look out for while working on regular radio and satellite antennas, because several times people have unplugged equipment and went up the antenna tower to work only for some idiot to ignore the lockout/tagout and plug the equipment back in and turn it on. You need to monitor yourself for symptoms constantly so you can rush back down before you become unable to get down on your own. Sucks being stuck halfway up a 500 ft tower and start vomiting and pass out due to heat stroke.

    Microwaves are just light. There are two ways to cook with light: infrared lights (like the red lights keeping things warm in a cafeteria) or microwaves that vibrate certain molecules (not just water). When the microwave turns off, there is no more microwaves, just like when you turn off a flashlight there is no more light. The food is in no way "more dangerous" if it passed through a microwave. Microwave photons themselves are dangerous to humans if they hit us (the microwave light would cook us just like they cook the food inside the box) and that is why microwave boxes have screened doors and protection so that no microwaves can escape the box while cooking. But once it turns off, it poses no danger to us, nor does the food that was in it. Even with modern protection, I'd still avoid standing in front of the microwave while it is on, but once it's off, enjoy your food knowing it poses absolutely no danger!

      @@mattbarusic3090 Physics student here, we just discussed wavelength spectrums of differently heated solids. Just for fun I did a rough estimate of the black body radiation temperature microwave oven waves correspond too, at their wavelength of about 10 centimeters. It's 0.02 Kelvin. That means it's colder, less energetic, radiation than all other radiation you'll find in the universe pretty much, including the background radiation left over from the big bang 13 billion years ago (sitting at about 2 Kelvin).
      The only reason we can heat anything with it, is cause it we use such an absurd amount of photons at once. Imagine transporting energy in a water stream down a hill VS bullets.
      The energy of one bullet is enough to kill you because of how concentrated it is, but the energy of a drop of water doesn't do anything. It's about the same thing with radiation.
      An atom gets hit with a particle of high energy gamma radiation? It's gonna get wrecked basically.
      But instead a bunch of atoms get hit by weak microwaves with an equivalent amount of energy? They vibrate a little more than before.
      Of course if you were put in giant microwave being bombarded with a sizeable portion of all the photons at once, you would still die, but you'd die by overheating, not anything ionising as would be the problem with the type of radiation you'd get in nuclear reactors or something.

      Not all radiation is ionizing, though. People think “radiation = bad” but that’s untrue. Not all radiation is harmful to us.
      Typical people don’t even understand WHY ionizing radiation can harm you, and that ignorance makes them fear stuff they don’t understand.

      @@willowwoolgather6478 yes true, but microwave radiation isn't exactly harmless....there's a reason pregnant women shouldn't stand infront of a microwave and in the modern world we are constantly being bombarded by radiation...like atm I am typing on something that over long periods of time and with the right level of exposure, can cause tumors
