Ferrari 312PB Ends an Era With a Bang

- The Ferrari 312PB (officially known as the 312P, but appended with the 'B' by the media to differentiate it from the '69 312P) marked the end of an era. It was Ferrari's last new car developed specifically for sports prototype racing. In the hands of drivers like Mr. Mario Andretti it was a world-beater helping to cement his reputation. The thing is, that as great a racer as he was, other Scuderia Ferrari drivers were similarly successful with the Group 5 car. Drivers Brian Redman and Arturo Merzario each drove the car and combined to win three of the eleven races of the 1972 championship-winning season, a season that saw Ferrari win every race except the 24 Hours of Le Mans (which they sat out due to reliability questions related to the Formula One-derived twelve cylinder).
And reliability issues were the one concern that truly worried Mr. Steven Read before acquiring this endurance legend. He wanted to take it vintage racing but every photo of the 312PB that he found featured about twenty mechanics working on the car simultaneously while it was in the pits. Obviously such an extensive endeavor would have been prohibitive. Perhaps it was the Formula One-based cockpit that attracted him, or the fact that this was one of the last Ferrari sports prototypes of the golden age of racing. Or maybe the 312PB's racing pedigree, including races at Brands Hatch, Daytona, Nurburgring, and Watkins Glen and the fact that it can pull multiple Gs through corners and keep you motionless in the seat with your hands right where they need to be that convinced him it might be worthwhile. All of these factors probably contributed, but let's be honest, it had to be that sound!
The Ferrari 312PB is special for another reason too: it was Ferrari's last sports prototype before they exited sports car racing to focus their efforts solely on Formula One. They put the exclamation point on a long and storied history by winning the championship.

DAT SOUND!
Mojo Risin best sounding racing car EVER.
Friends, this is finger-licking gorgeous.... Listen to the heavenly symphony of this 3 litre flat 12! And in the sports car configuration it wasn't even revving as high as in the 312 B2's F1 Cars... Sitting here, watching this..... what beauty.
Forghieri was a great engineer who made beautiful real Race Cars and Engines. Credit where it is due....
Well stated!
How could you play music over the sound of that car. That was a crime!!!!
Wow what a car!!!!!!!
Le Mans 1973.... 2nd overall.... Merzario and the sweet gentleman Carlos Pace. Thank you so much for this video!!! greetings from Brazil!
That sound tho.
enough with the standard meaningless internet cliches..
Jonas Rosenven well then the internet is not a place for you.
Haha, owned.
Max Dickson enough with the standard meaningless internet cliches..
Is it the best engine note ever???
Watching this in 1080p with the sound cranked up is a near religious experience. May god bless Petrolicious and Ferrari. Amen.
Amen.
Papa Bless.
Those downshifts are orgasmic!
Even Jesus would have stopped believing in God if he had ever heard a V12
Oh man, the goosebumps I got at the downshifts in the end of the video. Beautiful!
In 1973 Jacky Ickx qualified one of these little Ferraris at Spa Franchochamps for the 1000km race at an average speed of 164 mph. That until Monza F1 Gp in 2018, was the fastest ever lap of a road circuit.
Thank you so much Steven, for sharing this incredible and rare car with us! All the cars on this channel are special and wonderful in their own way but this is truly a very special treat for us all. Kind regards from Leo in Denmark.
THAT IS HOW YOU START A FUCKING VIDEO.
couldn't agree more
Another Masterpiece, both the car and the video. Thank you Petrolicious.
Interior looks comfy for a race car!
And that sound……glorious!
0:15 Chills, it roars so loud with so little displacement, beautifull.
Wow it's fast. At 20ft per nanosecond (As stated 0:45 ) it moves approximately 20 times the speed of light.
That's why that car won.
To think you took the time out of your day to give a shit...
Thayne Palmer A very short time, given that light travels about a foot pr. nanosecond and that that was knowledge I already possessed.
***** Odd, I think of it as a fun fact, literal or not. And why should I stop being literal when I am the only one (In this thread)? I'd rather be that than say what everybody else says.
Quicker than anything lol
If you pardon my improper language: - Screw turbos, hybrids and diesels. This is how a proper racing car sounds like. Also no cookie cutter drivers!
Whats a driver anymore? Most cars drive themselves these days!
thank safety regulations for neutering any thrills the past had
There should coexist hybrid, electric, naturally aspirated, etc.. No reason why we should have to choose.
The initial 25 secs with that thundering downshift at the end of the straight just made my day...I've goosebumps and watery eyes now!
Just listen to that. Listen to it and forget about everything that's bothering you for a brief moment. That's the beauty of Ferrari. It's not about 0-60 times or 'Ring times. It's about how you feel when behind the wheel of a moving symphony and a rolling piece of art. Only those who have driven a V12 Ferrari understand.
The greatest automobile manufacturer in the world Scuderia Ferrari
You guys always produce top notch videos. Keep up the good work!
That eargasm in the beginning of the video is insane! Goosebumps all over! ❤️
Love your videos. Finest videos on RUclips about cars for petrolheads!
Wonderful! Such an amazing and beautiful racing machine. Forza Ferrari!!!
After hours of seeing and listening to this video, can say this is the best one you have ever done, but then i see the others videos you have put together and DAMM... better than the one before. Thank you for the experiences!!
Fantastic impressive camerawork once again !
Awesome car too, watched the last few seconds like ten times, just to hear that gorgeous sound again and again.
Thanks !
This channel presents perhaps the best photo journal I’ve ever seen of race car stories. The content is so stunning, you end up falling in love not just with the gorgeous car and the breathtaking sound of the engine, but with the sun, sky and earth around the race track 🏆😘🙏🏽
Thanks for posting this. The sound of these old racers is hypnotic. Matt Cramp
The production quality of this video is so perfect. The combination of the piano music and the V12 whine might just be the most beautiful thing ive ever heard.
at the beginning of '70s the prototype (P) championship was nearly more important than the F1 one,
the sound of the 312 "boxer" Ferrari (180^ flat) was exactly that shown in the video: "harmonic" ...
.
In my opion cars that run for more than 2 hours are the best. F1 has always been technical even clinical series. Endurance racing combines that with full on precision in everything, one small misjudgment hours down the line can spell disaster or at best a DNF.
what a treat and find these videos are!! Great for the insights from the guys who raced or were affiliated to the car at the time it was being raced. Just the right length of time too, no getting bored here! Good work, Petrolicious :)
Perfect. Every shot is fantastic and the sound is TOP NOTCH!.
I would love to see a video or read an article about the work you do behind the scene.
great video! always looking forward to the amazing camera work in all of your videos!
This is a beautifully shot video! Seriously nice work
Man, Petrolicious, your videos are as beautiful as the cars they showcase. The music, the car footage, the interviews and history... absolutely my favorite RUclips channel! Keep up the stellar work.
+Petrolicious your video's production is incredible every shot edit, sound edit music choice is magic. Bringing these amazing muscle, sports & racing machines, the rare, brutally expensive and the obscure manufacturers that only a small group would recognize has raised the bar For us petrol heads all over the world. Thank you
I really want to find the song at 4:06 can you please help??
According to my Soundhound, it's "Grace" by Patrick Watson, from "Love Songs for Robots."
Robert O'Brien totally different song
You guys always do such an excellent job shooting these cars and editing these pieces every week, I always look forward to the films from Petrolicious. I have watched this video four times now, several times for how well it was put together, but mostly for that unbelievable sound. Well done to you for the video and to Mr. Read for still driving this amazing machine!
Here here
I will never, ever drive a car like this but thank you for bringing this experience that much closer to me.
Your own piece of motoring history..... Lucky Lucky Man. Beautiful, Visceral, Orchestral automotive art. I`m so pleased that there are some people out there that believe in keeping the history alive. Thank you.
The interior is BEAUTIFUL! So classy
Went to Bologna for a school trip, took a stroll down to the Ferrari museum, walked in, looked at some very nice cars and then I see this beautiful 312pb sitting there and my mouth just drops
Best feature yet, Petrolicious. I've enjoyed other cars featured even more, but your photography and succinct story telling is impeccable. Congratulations on a wonderful formula, and please keep these coming!
Beautiful car.... Awesome engine... Incredible sound and one very lucky happy gentleman. Thank you for the vid guys.
Terrific video, very well done! And the car, like Steven said, wow!
the design beauty of this era, the sound etc... difficult to be matched again..
Thank you for driving it in front of the camera!!!
The greatest automobile ever built the ferrari 312 PB, that brutal sound, a masterpiece, this is why Ferrari is so special, Scuderia Ferrari.
For those 35 thumbs down all I can say is you're never seen a 312PB in person . This is great to see it on RUclips. I try to get to most of the vintage racing in my area as possible . The beauty of the car is only matched by the sound. This Ferrari is load , really load ear splitting , on the pit wall at Laguna seca when one blasted down the straight, thought I was a teenager again . Great stuff , Cheers for the video
It's a treat to see and hear this car on song.
I don't know who recorded the audio for this car at the track but you got it spot on, and great mix, very rare in a car video. Minimal distortion just gorgeous. Rest of the video is great too, I was just surprised by how good the mix is...
Great story and video of this vintage Ferrari racer. Thanks for uploading - and that great V12 sound, Wonderful.
I've met, had a drink with and talked to Mr. Brian Redman, talk about a man with a legacy. Amazing car btw, such a pure sound I will never grow tired of.
BTW Petrolicious, thanks for posting and sharing these wonderful video's!! Really enjoyable. Love it....
Oh that overrun at the end...WOW!
Great video, thanks for sharing!
Came here for the sound.
Did not leave disappointed.
almost positive we saw this yesterday! An SVRA event - Mid-Ohio Vintage Grand Prix. (6/28/15)
car was beautiful and quite the hidden treasure. and if that was in fact Steven Read we met, he was a very humble man! always an honor to hear from owners.
ferrari 3 litre 12 pot engines are a gift from the heavens... if i could hear that sound when i wake up for the rest of my life, i'd have finally found nirvana. i never knew the sound alone from ferrari 3 litres could almost make me high...
Alfa and Porsche from that era sound pretty darn good too. The small block Fords aren't too bad either.
50 years later 499p revives the legend❤
I had a demanding day work, came home, opened a bottle of wine and ate a steak and then found and watched this. Sublime. This such a delight to watch and to listen to.
Great race car. Glad you enjoy driving it so much and also let people around the world to see it.
coolest car so far on this channel. keep them coming! ;)
The early 1970s Ferrari V12 racing engines are the greatest sounding machines ever.
Terrific. Thanks PL.
Aaaaaannndd....subscribed. What a beautiful engine sound and car btw. It is a beast.
God why cant cars today sound like this. This thing is one of the best sounding machines I have ever heard.
Saw Mr. Read and this car in Mont-Tremblant Quebec yesterday, beautiful car and nice sound.
OK I know I'm late. I just discovered this, and I can't stop listening to the last 11 sec.
What a fantastic sound, let alone the car. Brilliant. Was that a LM 250 in the background when the owner was talking? If so, yet another beautiful sound, a classic V12 "ripping calico" sound.
One of the rare times i've gotten goosebumps from a video.
Amazing to see someone give this car what it deserves... an opportunity to be driven fast and to race!
Great video once again!!!
You guys need to make more of these classic Ferrari race car video's
RUclipsでしか見れない貴重な映像、有難う🎵 感謝
great sound! it´s like a Verdi symphony!
Best sound EVER!
A POV lap of this macchina would be awesome..
And what a yell it has!!
The only other car that gave me goosebumps from a RUclips video was a 787B. Now this... holy hell
It gave me a boner...
Scuderia Ferrari
Troy B How can anyone mention a 787B sound in the same sentence as a Ferrari? 🤮
@@thethirdman225 ruclips.net/video/sxXtpMngivM/видео.html
Troy B Yes, great looking car - maybe the best looking - but I have never liked the sound. Nobody else did at the time either.
Grandpa Stig!! As stated below...beautiful car, amazing sound.
Stunning video!!!
It just warms my heart seeing a beautiful beast of a race car being whipped around a race track. I mean can you fucking imagine...taking your vintage Ferrari race car around the world. Manly tears, man. Manly tears
Maybe one of my favorite Ferraris ever. I’d live to see this and the 333SP together on track.
This is why I've always loved the freewheeling racers of the 70's and especially the 80's. Not only the amazing designs and looks but just the raw power and control.
Amazing car! amazing video!
Fantastic sound!!!
Petrolicious just realized you are not the car owner. First video I have watched of yours. Subscribed.
Love this channel!
I probably saw this car at Watkins Glen in 1972. There were 3 312PB's entered, including Redman/Merazio. This video does not do justice to the sound and feel of this car. I don't expect an amateur racer and collector to drive the car like an Andretti or a Redman, so no disrespect to Mr. Read, who helped make this wonderful video. In 1972 there was no chicane on the straight at the Glen, so cars would be at very high speed as they approached the turn at the end of the straight. At very high speed these cars would downshift. Several hundred meters away you would feel an impact in your chest from the downshift. Of course, the high rpm shriek was even higher pitched and incredibly loud as well. The chicane is there now, and there are no cars like this anymore. Oh well.
Mixed feelings, constant goosebumps...
I would felt like king of the world if i would own this machine!
Beautiful video.
wat a lovely sounding car and a great video
Petrolicious hope you will be bringing this beauty to Goodwood Members Meeting 2017 in England. They are featuring this car at the meet. Hope to see you there. Beautiful video and beautiful car.
Goose bumps, I tell you. Goose bumps!
I can so believe that listening to its music whilst driving is going to get you into trouble.
This IS the best sounding car EVER!
I got the opportunity to sit in this car two years ago. Let me tell you, you have to be super slim to fit! Beautiful car and in person it’s simply phenomenal
Must be a dream to drive it. JC, and then that SOUND!!!
Thank You!
That glorious sound OMG!!!!
The Ferrari 312 was a highly successful 3.3 litre V-12 (hence 312) Formula One car raced by the factory team from 1966 to 1969. The 312 B was used from 1970 until early 1975.
The 312 P began as a Group 6 Prototype-Sports Car raced in 1969 and 1970. It was a 3.3 litre Formula One 312 with an open Barchetta, and later a closed top Berlinetta body, the latter of which is one of most beautiful racing cars ever built by Ferrari. Chris Amon and Mario Andretti drove the open top 312 P to second overall and first in class at Sebring in 1969. Two Berlinettas were entered in the 1969 24 Hours of Le Mans. They were fifth and sixth on the grid, but didn't finish.
Hi ! I would like to know wish camera gear and step up (dollys/ sliders/lens) do you use usually ! thanks :D
One of the best sounds ever. Especially the engine braking is awesome!
That flyby at the beginning scared the sh*t out of me :D
What a glorious sound!
Oh you have to do some of these drive by's as a ringtone/message tone. That thing sounds heavenly/hellish haha!
