      To be fair, we have expertise on manufacturing tanks because Iran builds T72S under license.
      What they tried to do with Karrar is actually take the base design and re-engineer it to produce a tank on par with T90S at least, complete with modern fire-control system, 3rd generation ERA (RedEffect got that one thing wrong; Relikt is mounted on the MBT), newest thermal sights etc.
      My biggest issues are basically about firepower and the APS. I'm not certain if Iran possesses the latest APFSDS projectiles that are capable of penetrating newest generation ERA and to make matters worse, I've heard they've been struggling with the APS. Plus budget woes are ailing mass production because very little is allotted for defence ($15 billion out of a $600 billion economy -_- ).
      Zulfikar is out of time and they'll retire it the moment Karrar can finally be put into mass production. Although when I think about it, Iran doesn't need that many MBTs but rather requires more light tanks with good mobility and decent firepower, not much else.
      Just my humble opinion :-)

    One thing I feel is lacking from your overviews of tanks, is a direct comparison with most likely opponent's tanks. Often the tanks you analyse, won't stand up against "modern" tanks. However how do they compare to threats potentially faced a regional conflict? I.e. does the tank fulfill the immediate and future need of the country in question?

    • @pmnichols10
      @pmnichols10 Год назад +3

      You're probably under the mindset that a tank is just a tank and can be compared as such. But that only works if you ignore the logistics associated with a tank formation, then all bets are off and the last become the first if they are easier to maintain.
      The M1 Abrahams and the Leopard are two excellent examples of weapons that are a big liability in a symmetric confrontation with a military that favors durability and low maintenance requirements.
      ...and that's basically why they're not being supplied to Ukraine, even if they weren't destroyed by the Russians in the battlefield they would would have plenty of chances to destroy them in transit from the maintenance facilities outside of Ukraine. I'm not sure which tank was used in the invasion of Iraq but they're advance towards Bagdad required engine swaps as they reached 100 hours of operation.
      I know this because I actually worked with an engineer that designed the crate that was used to drop the engines by parachute in the path of the tanks.

      Iranian commanders would most likely avoid using their tanks in frontal assaults against superior hardware. Instead they would most likely send ATGM crews or snipers in ghillie suits to slow down armored, mechanized units. Iran produces lots of deadly projectiles, including a TOW copy called the Toophan, which they commonly mount on Iranian made jeeps, the Safir jeeps. Iran's mountainous terrain, coupled with their missiles, air defenses, underground facilities would be a nightmare for any invading force. To top if off, aside from the regular military and IRGC, Iran has a paramilitary force called the Basij, who some say number in the millions and they're all pretty well armed.

    Hey redeffect, Just to clarify the Zulfiqar program has long been ditched by the IRGC and is not relevant to today's Iranian military industry.
    Regarding the Karrar, recently the Iranian army ground force brigadier general Kiomars Heidari said the defense ministry and the armed forces have jointly developed an Iranian T-90 tank. and that it is undergoing final tests before being delivered to the army ground force. (first batch of the tanks to be delivered in the Iranian month of Mehr (September 22 - October 21).)
    Now me and many others on the Iranian defense forum have been speculating that Heidari is in fact referring to the Karrar project (or at least some variant of it) and not the Russian T-90 due to the fact that wording such as "The homegrown tank" and "undergoing final tests" are used. keep in mind that the Karrar is an IRGC project and normally their project have been rather potent and more successful in entering mass production compared to IRIA projects (ex. Zulfiqar).
    Since it seems that current priorities in the Iranian defense industry seem to be oriented towards Missile/Space/Air defense/and navy, IMO it is reasonable to assume that the strategy moving forward would be upgrading existing T-72S to Rakhsh standards, upgrade existing Bmp-2/Btr-50/Boragh with the new raad-2 unmanned turret armed with 30 mm and ATGMs, while slowly producing batches of the new T-90/Karrar and retiring the old chieftain/mobarez/M-60 tanks and maybe trying to get a license for the Armata in the future.
    PS : check out this documentary about the upgrade program for Iran's T-72, though it is in farsi it should hopefully get the point across https: //tn. ai/2132304

      @@williwass6837 I could be wrong but don't think what general Heidari is referring to is a license or TOT of T-90 rather it's just the wording that's off, though I'm inclined to believe that Iran got either a deal for a V84 or V92 variant or they managed to produce a powerful and potent enough engine for mass production since we know that was the problem with the Karrar. Same story happened with the Fotros project but recently it seems they've solved that with a new domestically produced engine.

    I understand that Iran is very behind in several areas of defense due to its dire economic situation, now that the UN arms embargo expires in October and the US wants to renew it without the support of the international community, it will be possible for Iran to acquire technology and weapons of Russia and China.
    What do you think would be the best option, I read that Russian arms sales have decreased in recent years and probably the Russians are very interested in Iran becoming a regular customer of its arms industry.
    As the influence and power of the United States is diminishing more and more in the world (it is happening and it is a reality) and that of China is growing, it will probably take Iran about 35 or 45 years to recover economically and grow again.
    In all that time, the arms industry in Russia and China could have a secure client until Iran is fully self-sufficient in defense, which is Iran's long-term goal.

    AH YES THANK YOU SO MUCH! Also the karrar tank is currently still under a research as it is like a prototype and they are fixing the mistakes of it. The Zulfiqar is at least a good tank and the Zulfiqar would more likely a regional tank and the Karrar is inside of the country defense. There is still karrar tanks being made but they are finding more mistakes as all other tanks will have as it is new and new stuff should be fixed. Iran is mass producing the karrar but are planning to realise the full thing about it in a bit. Iran is growing a lot and I do appreciate you doing something on Iran and listening to my comment. Thank you and have a good time!

    Ahh the good old pitfall of tank warfare. The Nazis learned this the hard way. Tanks don't win wars. Air superiority does. Mmm terminal velocity ftw.

    • @mirror452

      Far too simplistic. Vietnam didn't have air superiority and still won.

    • @inisipisTV
      @inisipisTV 3 года назад +1

      @@mirror452 - North Vietnam won because they have more tanks than the South, that's why they roll into Saigon with loads of Russian tanks, and they have one the most sophisticated Ground to Air missile defense. Remember Sen. John Mcain shooting. Plus the North outnumbered the South in manpower. It's myth that the Vietnamese won by using straggling Vietcong guerrilla most those were decimated. They won because they have a very highly trained and modernly equipt North Vietnamese Army.
      Though the relentless Bombing by US did get then to sign a peace treaty to end the war. 5 years later the South Government collapses and the US decided not intervene anymore. Now that's more in politics.
