@@AlexRN Mulaney used to be a writer on the show, and when he comes back he likes to do skits he helps write, and highlight skits that don't normally get picked by the host. The musical ones are an example of both. My all time favorite is "What's That Name"
John Mulaney really nailed the trilogy tonight after his “I’m getting back at those jerks for never giving me a chance in high school theatre” musical number. Best 3rd installment in a Franchise since “Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi.”
He's awesome. But I have to admit that it's still weird for me to see him dressed like that. I'm used to him dressed up like an old man with Nick Kroll or in a nice suit.
Does this mean every time John Mulaney hosts SNL, there must be an obligatory sketch that's a pastiche to Broadway shows and musicals? I'm not complaining, however.
The songs that were parodied, in order: 1. "Phantom of the Opera" from Phantom of the Opera 2. "America" from West Side Story 3. "Tomorrow" from Annie 4. "Cool" from West Side Story 5. I like how they probably thought, “Who’d be the most unexpectedly perfect person to play an airport deviant singing like Idina Mendel in Wicked?” And came up with Jake Gyllenhaal
David Byrne: Not only allowing the lyrics to one of his hit songs be revamped for comedy, he's actually singing (and dancing) along! What a great sport!
I love that there's a specific genre of SNL sketch where Pete Davidson makes bad decisions while John Mulaney and Keenan Thompson sing about it and Chris Redd looks on in disgust and awe.
Aron James second world refers to communist/socialist countries during the Cold War. Third world has come to mean undeveloped when it originally meant not aligned with the US or USSR during the Cold War.

KK Akuoku Diner Lobster is high art
I love how this had nothing to do with sushi
Yesss, they’re like sushi you get it it’s musical time!
Jenni Murphy I know - at the end I was like “so he still bought the sushi?”
Right!! 😂😂
It did for the first three minutes.
That's what I was thinking 😅
Auntie Orphan Annie gets me every time
John Mulaney really nailed the trilogy tonight after his “I’m getting back at those jerks for never giving me a chance in high school theatre” musical number. Best 3rd installment in a Franchise since “Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi.”
True, but Return Of The King would like to have a word.
Captain America Civil War and Avengers Infinity War
Neked Gun 33 1/3 has entered the oh never mind
The unknown wonders of the world trilogy

There always seems to be more fun when John Mullany hosts.
He should have a variety show
He's awesome. But I have to admit that it's still weird for me to see him dressed like that. I'm used to him dressed up like an old man with Nick Kroll or in a nice suit.
Because John is very familiar with all the staff at SNL. He was a writer there.
He writes the best scripts. He is the one who wrote this script!
It’s weird the content isn’t funnier it’s just I laugh more
*"If I cough then it's over"*
"No I was not in parasite"
Ya'll going hell for this!!🤣
i love any sketch where the cast sings because you can tell they're having fun
“I’m just a profiled Asian, no I’m not from Parasite” 😂
Sammie Xiong 😂
Out got that line all wrong.
I'm pretty the song is from little Shop of horrors.
Was lmfao when my caption said "Probio Agent" instead of profiled Asian. Lol. 😅
Omg yesss it is the truth
Does this mean every time John Mulaney hosts SNL, there must be an obligatory sketch that's a pastiche to Broadway shows and musicals?
I'm not complaining, however.
Once he joins the 5 timers club, the entire episode should be one giant musical.
@@jkap34 They need to do this when he's a five timer.
Thanks for making me look up a word
Yes, yes it does.
*googles pastiche*
This sketch screams early 2020 VERY HARD.
Kinda sad
Ya, some of these jokes aged like milk.
I will always come back to this sketch to remember.
Yeah, some of it aged like sushi.
And what a scream it was
I love how you can clearly see that the cast is having so much fun in these musical skits.
The songs that were parodied, in order:
1. "Phantom of the Opera" from Phantom of the Opera
2. "America" from West Side Story
3. "Tomorrow" from Annie
4. "Cool" from West Side Story
5. "Defying Gravity" from Wicked
6. "Suddenly Seymour" from Little Shop of Horrors
7. "Road to Nowhere" by the Talking Heads
Kirette that’s why I didn’t recognize that least one!
It isn’t from a musical
THANK YOU FOR THIS
Not all heroes wear capes. Bless you. 🙏
@@ineedaname2064 Funny, It was one of the only ones I recognized.
Such an important PSA
If SNL has learned anything in the past year, it's let the theatre kids take over
So they need to get theater kids as cast members, preferably those who can do comedy.
Quite a few of the cast members sing very well, especially the women. I thought that when I watched Bodega Bathroom, too.
THEATER KID CHECK!!!
pretty much all actors were theatre kids before their career.
Except Mulaney wasn't a theater kid
Everyone is talking about how good Cecily’s voice is, but Bowen’s is actually fire.
They’re both absolutely fantastic!
I Love both of their parts but my favorite is Jake Gyllenhaal"s song. How can someone still be so attractive in baggy pajamas, a 5 o'clock shadow and shaggy hair? I just love him.
Right? He is soooo good
FUCKING THANK YOU - I was A C T I V E L Y searching for a comment about his singing. Thank youuuu 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾✨
Singers are a dime a dozen, especially in show biz.
This was aired a year ago to the day and I can't believe how things were still normal then. COVID was only briefly mentioned in this skit because it hadn't gotten out of hand yet
Tbf its fair to say COVID was probably all over the world in December 2019 :/ but ofc we didn’t know until it was detected. (I personally think there are way more cases than we think)
Yeah, I think the original airdate was 2/29/2020. Only a short time later everything changed with COVID.
You can just tell there is so much genuine pride and joy amongst everyone involved in this
They all experienced LaGuardia
“We’ve all seen a bird in an airport”
This is a HORSE, LOOSE IN A HOSPITAL!
I feel like this joke was far to under appreciated I'm glad somone else got it
I love every musical sketch they do when mulaney is there. Lobster diner is still my favorite though but this had wicked spin off so it's up there
Im from nyc so bodega bathroom is it for me.
Bodega Bathroom was my favourite.
I like how they probably thought, “Who’d be the most unexpectedly perfect person to play an airport deviant singing like Idina Mendel in Wicked?” And came up with Jake Gyllenhaal
Makes sense you should listen to him in Sunday In The Park With George and he was also in Little Shop of Horrors as well
I hope he gets to at least present a TONY
“YOU WANT IT?”
Throws TONY*
“GO GET IT”
STAGE SMARTS!!
I get those references!
Solid.
SOMEONE ANWSER ME. HAS THIS ONLY BLOWN UP CUZ PETE IS WEARING GOLF?
As long as doesn't go to a second location after party
Auntie Anne's as little orphan Annie had me dying.
John: I have an entire page of DiBlasio jokes.
Lorne: ...Do ‘em.
John: OK, Lorne, now I have an entire song excerpt about DiBlasio.
Lorne: ....Do it.
"No, i wasn't in parasite" the most hilarious line in the whole sketch
David Byrne: Not only allowing the lyrics to one of his hit songs be revamped for comedy, he's actually singing (and dancing) along! What a great sport!
Suz Phillips oh finally. A comment saying who that man is for us non theater nerds. Now to search “david bryne and Broadway”
@@kdfkdf1711 Search "David Byrne Talking Heads Road to Nowhere."
He has always been my fav, way back in the CBGB days, when he was a New York college student
@@kdfkdf1711 he isn't a theater guy! he is the lead for the Talking Heads, the musical guest that night.
He's adorable - I love the way he starts giggling when the audience applauds over his line. And his speaking voice sounds very soothing.
gettin real nostalgic for when covid was still thought of as only a thing in china, hinestly feels like years ago
Yep. I really never imagined it having the effect it did worldwide.
@@nightmarevision7676 hope you get better
@@nightmarevision7676 stay strong, really hope you get better
I hate to admit that I feel the same but it goes to show how short our attention spans are.
@@nightmarevision7676 stay strong and positive, I'm praying for you
I love that there's a specific genre of SNL sketch where Pete Davidson makes bad decisions while John Mulaney and Keenan Thompson sing about it and Chris Redd looks on in disgust and awe.
Can you add more suggestions please. these are hilarious
matthew Ameel Diner Lobster fits the category
@@42flyingphish- There are two other similar musical sketches linked in the video description.
watching this back and remembering that bowen was so new in the cast then. what an icon then and even more now, so proud of how far he's come.
“This airport is its own world!” “Yes, a third world.” That line didn’t get enough love 😂😂
Ikr!🤷 😆😆
I guess I better fly out of JFK, lol
He makes every sketch 10x funnier
Aron James second world refers to communist/socialist countries during the Cold War. Third world has come to mean undeveloped when it originally meant not aligned with the US or USSR during the Cold War.
Aron James first world
Headcanon: John Mulaney spends all these sketches internally reciting HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NOW speeches addressed to his high school drama teacher who never gave him a part
He's hilarious and he's a major talent... but he still can't sing. That "Sound of Music" sketch really shows why in school they wouldn't even cast him in the chorus.
I don't know if you watch late night with seth myres. but john was on there after lobster diner. and seth was his boss at the time and wouldn't let them do it.
He sucks a bit less than others on show. Shit show now
Emma Eisenberg probably accurate
@Mike Nunyabizness damn Mike! You're angry.
No one:
Jake Gyllenhaal: aAAaaAaAaAaAAHhHH!!!!!
*Gyllenhaal
Scrolling comments while watching, your comment hit just the right moment X,D
I was looking at him and I wasn’t sure if it was Jake Gyllenhaal or not. Thanks!
Cecily Strong does such a great job with these musical numbers!
She was one of my all time favorite cast members. Miss her.
“Here comes the crying baby about to board a transcontinental flight," is probably my favorite part. So true, especially when it's a transoceanic flight😅
Wutzmyname Mike Hello police, yes it was this comment right here
Okay but can we talk about how Cecily is a great musical actress, the way she delivers "mistake!" Is hilarious
I think she loves these more than anyone else.
About two or three seasons ago she became awesome! She’s like the “glue” the same way Hartman was: always makes skits better
I've never seen her break before but even she seemed amused by her own delivery of "This great... MISTAKE!!!"... I could see the trace of a smile...
Has she done that dumb party girl that goes through her purse and rambles on and on while she's sitting at the news desk? I have not seen that yet and I wonder if she retired that character?
@@catwhisperer7655 I haven't seen her do that in quite a while. Too bad. It's a great recurring character.
“Outlets are there for a cool prank” A fully true statement that I’ve been on the wrong end of too many times
lpyankee2 pedantic guy: “cruel” prank
Same. I got GOT.
That is nearly half of all the airports I have been through in America...
O'hare is the worst
The level of cheer Jake Gyllenhaal got as he appeared next to John Mullaney feels like it would be less repeated this year xD
Why?
@@courtneymcrain22 well I mean between Taylor Swift's album and John's whole personal life stuff lol
@@TheJediMazter I saw John got divorced but I'm still not following
@@courtneymcrain22 he basically was married and was open about how they never wanted kids and then turns out it was something like he cheating on his wife and left his ex to have a baby with someone else and there's all sorts of gossip/drama that goes way deeper on how it was a dick move all around
@@TheJediMazter ah ok yeah that's shitty
What about the T Swift album?
Started off weird, got weirder, then Jake G showed up and cranked it to 11. Not a dull moment, with a boffo finish! Just fantastic!
Mike Timmons It's like a fever dream.
David Byrne cranked it to 13.
I didn’t know that I needed Jake Gyllenhaal singing a version of “Defying Gravity” about wanting/liking to be searched and frisked....
Wow, thank you for all the likes!
Oh, I've always known I needed it.
I thought Jake Gyllenhaal was supposed to be that lead singer from the band Creed. It made me sad when he didn't sing 'Can You Take Me Higher?'
Remember when he hosted and legit rocked "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going"?
Ok that was too cute!
Look at Gyllenhaal's performance 'Music everywhere' in Mulaney's The sack lunch bunch. It is GENIUS.
This is what you’ll dream AFTER eating the sushi.
Then they should have had Pete eat the sushi roll just so this can make sense.
is no one gonna talk about how Bowen can SING??
